Cap and Cyclops. Cap because, for one thing, I admire a non-powered guy who can lead eatrh's mightiest heroes. I love the way he led Cap's cooky quartet, and the way he earned Hawkeye's respoect after Hawkeye harassed him every chance he got for the first couple of years. Cyclops, because I I like the way he was able to lead such a disparate team, especially having to deal with Wolverine. I liked him in the 60's too, though he was more of a teacher's pet type back then. Plus, the X-Men and Avengers were always my two favorite teamsm, which is probably why I chose these guys over Reed, though I admire Reed's brilliance.

1) The pleaure of reading a good, exciting story 2) Larger than life, inspirational characters (modern day myths) 3) The nostalgia of reading comics from my youths, ads and all! 4) Great artwork, when it happens. 5) Discussing them with others.

Wow, that is cool. Broght back just in time for the book to be cancelled! I actually have most of the back issues from #12 through #93. After I get finished reading through all my Avengers, those wacky mutants are next!

I know the last post here is almost 2 years ago, but I evened things up for Ultron. While I think that Kang is actualy a better character than Ultron, I give Ultron bonus points for his connections to the Avengers. Plus, that time travel/paradox "if I went back in time and killed my father before I was born, would I have been born?" B.S. annoys me a bit.

I thought Peitro's reaction to his sister's romance with the Vision was shickingly hypocritical, since he was angry at humanity for discriminating against mutants, and here he is discriminating against another sentient life form. By the way, I think Hawkeye was a real jerk, too (to Cap anyway), until Cap finally won his respect.

have you guys been reading Green Lantern? I generally like Geoff John's work, but there's been a lot gratuitous gore in it. Not sure why we need to see folks puking blood, for example. That seems to be a trend with Johns lately. For instance, Legion of 3 Worlds.

High Pockets, Elf, Tin Man (Iron Man). I'm sure Hulk has given plenty of heroes hilarious nicknames, but I can't think of any offhand.

Bendis should just keep his mouth shut and let his cr@ppy writing speak for itself. I'll admit that the Avengers ranks behind Spider-Man and the X-Men in overall poularity, but there's no shame in that. It's still been one of Marvel's top comics, pretty consistently, for nearly 46 years. Not bad.

I agree about Quicksilver. I probably should have worked him somewhere into my top 10. Oh well.

I loved the Beast in the Avengers--he was the first super-hero who mutated into a monster (for lack of a better word) who didn't mope around in self-pity, in fact--he totally embraced it! He flaunted it! That is what I loved most about him. That's also why I used to love Nightcrawler. He didn't exactly falunt it like the Beast, but he was a happy go lucky guy in spite of his appearance.

Anyhow, this was great. The Avengers/Defenders battles were actually pretty good, as far as superhero vs. superhero battles go. They weren't cop-outs, though the Defenders won most of the battles because the story dictated it. The "bad guy tricks good guys into fighting each other" is a bit cliche, but it at least got us an exciting story.

I have a blood condition (unfortunately not a joke) when I get home from work I'm usually very tired. So I read comics while talking to my loverly wife (who against all odds is NOT my cousin) and then sharing what I liked, or dislike with my new friends on here who share a common interest. I wish my wife would let me read comics when I talked to her, or rather, when she talks to me, since she does most of the talking! Sorry to hear about your blood condition, though.

He is pretty insane at first. I like how they play up his stength, as well as his agility. Seems like later on, he was just the agile one. I know there is an issue somewhere around #170 where Cap is struggling to curl 500 lbs (an amazing amount for a "normal" to curl!) and when he is done, Beast walks by and casually picks up the 500 lb dumbell with one hand, lifts it over his head, and walks away to put it away, singing all the way, as if it's nothing. He was over the top goofy at first. I like him as a jokester, but it was a bit too much a first. I like when he used big words back in the early X-Men days.

I had never read the issue where the Beast was introduced. Just got done with 136 and 137. 137 Is his first appearance in the Avengers fur-clad, and he is absolutely INSANE. He goes completely whacko and almost beats Iron Man to death. In the next issue he joins the Avengers at their open call,... I can only guess a lot of stuff must've happened for him to be able to approach the team without them Assembling his furry behind. That was a reprint from an Amazing Adventures comic, used as a fill-in because the real story wasn't ready. He wasn't a memer at that point.

I'm torn. I love the Beast. I love both Avengers and X-men. As to which group I'd rather see him in, it really depends on who else is on those teams. If one team already has a similar character (Nightcrawler, for instance, in terms of both powers and, to a lesser extent, personality) then there is less need for him on that team. I'll gladly take him on either team. I liked the nerdyBeast of X-Men days, and when he became a happy go lucky joker with the Avengers, I liked that too, though he was at times too much of a goofball and some of his jokes were pretty corny.

Call me a softie. I gave it a 4. Largely because of its imporance, but we must also judge it against the poor standards of 1963. Most team book back then had little characterization, and pretty run-of-the-mill plots. True, their reason for getting together was weaker than most teams, but Kirby makes up for that somewhat.

I just re-read this for the first time in over 20 years. I was hoping it held up, and it did! It was beautiful. Not only an incredibly powerful adversary worthy of taking on ALL of the Avengers, but I enjoyed the fact that: 1) this was as much a love story as anything else, and 2) Korvac was NOT evil. Misguided, maybe, but not evil. This was a tainted vivtory for the Avengers.

Hank has lost his head several times before this. Nothing new there. Yeah, I didn't like, or understand, Thor & Iron Man fighting over baldie. Especially out of character for Thor.

Yeah, this was a horrible powering up. It was pretty weak science, even by comic book standards, and came from out of nowhere. It must have been created just to come up with a story and, mercifully, was more or less forgotten. I do love Englehart's run, though, and I liked Mantis, though not as much as Englehart did.
