There are many good choices, but I chose Barry Allen and Jean Grey. As far as I'm concerned, there are two meaningful comic book death- Gwen Stacy and Barry Allen. All of these characters were brought back to make a buck, so I won't bother mentioning that. However, Barry and Gwen were not only very meaningful deaths, but they both stayed dead for a long time, making their deaths even more meaningful. Barry's ultimate sacrifice should have remained just that. I chose Jean over Gwen because Jean has been brought back so many times that it's become a joke, and it's quite sad. X-Men #137 may be my all time favorite comic, and I now feel like it's been diminished. If I try really hard, maybe I can block out the past 17 years.

The constant reboots have been a real problem. Certainly the Legion suffered from this more than any other single hero or group. When Byrne was allowed to re-boot Superman after Crisis, the elimination of Superboy from the 'official' timeline seemed to render the Legion's adventures moot (despite that ridiculous 'Pocket Universe Superboy' stuff). The Legion has been struggling ever since. We'll see if even Geoff john's can straighten it out. So sad. The Legion used to be my favorite DC comic.

I've come to the belief that the original Crisis on Infinite Earths has done more harm than good to DC as a whole. While the original intention of the series was to 'clean up' continuity and make the DC books more accessible to readers, I think this has not been the case. If anything, the elimination of the multiple universes, as well as the reboots of many characters and teams, left fans wondering which stories were still valid in the new DC universe (for example, I'm still not clear who are considered to be the founding members of the Justice League). I agree completely, 100%. I've said so on other message boards. While COIE was well done, in terms of writing and especially in terms of art, and while at the time I agreed with the goal of "cleaning up" the DC universe, it has clearly backfired. Instead of making things less complicated, it has made things infinitely more complicated. The constant crises and reboots have become a joke, IMO. While I certainly don't agree with everything Marvel does, I think they handle continuity MUCH better than DC does.

Hmmm, looks like the link I'd originally used for the FF #54 cover (from ffplaza.com) is disabled, so there was no image of the cover next to the shirt. I have just reposted the cover (thanks to Mile High Comics this time--a great vendor!). Ah, now that I see the FF cover, I undertand the comment about wishing it was Medusa's head instead of Wolverine's head.

I gave him a one. I have nothing agsint the character, but he has NO business whatsoever being on the Avengers. He belongs in the 19th century, period. He did nothing for me. I did like the crosover, however, when the Avengers went back in time to fight Kang and met all those Western heroes. Very cool. That was my first sight of the original Ghost Rider, and I always thought he was very cool looking! What evil hombre wouldn't be scared loking at that?

I really like the character, but I only gave him a 3. First, he himself admitted, when he was inducted, that he works better alone or with just Cap. No argument here. Also, his powers don't really add much to this team, IMO. More of a street level guy. I do also love his reaction to being the token black Avenger, saying "yessuh" to Gyrich.

I chose finances. Comics are so darn expensive now, and there are so many titles! Creative team would probably be my second choice.

David Finch? Cool in spades! I assume you mean the artist, not the director. :-)

I think I'll go with the second lineup of Cap, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch. Cap's leadership skills were pushed to the limit with an overbearing archer, a hotheaded speedster, and a much less powerful, less experienced, and less confident Wanda, plus no real powerhouse to call upon. There were excellent group dynamics here (Cap winning Clint's respect over time, Wanda's crush on Cap, Pietro's overprotectiveness of Wanda) especially for the 1960's! Really ahead of its time.
The worst has to be the #300 lineup.

Wow, I feel so insignificant. My oldest Avengers volume 1 is #10, and I've got 41 issues from #10-92. I've got almost all of Avengers vol. 1 from #104 through#321, then sporadic issues after that. I've got Giant size #2 and Annuals #5 and #8-18. I've got Essential Avengers vol. 1-6, so that gives me pretty much the entire volume 1 run up to about #321. I've got Avengers Forever, and Ultron Unlimited. I've got a few New & Mighty, but stopped collecting (I had just started up again after a hiatus of 17 years) when I realized how much Bendis sucked.

Dave Cockrum was one of my all time favorites. Not only for his X-Men creations, but because of his awesome Legions stuff. His Star Boy starfield costume is my all time favorite costume! Phantom Girl's bell bottoms a close second. :-)

As far as DC redrawing Kirby's faces on Superman material, I believe the reason they did so is because they wanted the faces to be consistent across their entire line of comics. I think hey did the same thing to other artists. Not that this would make it any less gaaulling to JK. That guy had to put of with a lot of s#$t at both Marvel and DC!

I guess I don't blame JB for considering work inked by somebody else to not be his. I read about one inker (I don't remember his name) who was active in the 60's and 70's who was the guy you called if you wanted something inked REALLY FAST. He had a habit of erasing some of the penciller's stuff so that he could finish more quickly. If you're erasing some background detail, that's one thing. However, one time, he actually erased somebody's head! I think it was in Thor, or Journey into Mystery. I wonder is somebody could get away with that today??

I agree that they will go with the Ultimates, which, I am totally unfamiliar with. Wasn't the Ultimate Universe created because of the movies? They wanted a Marvel universe which was more similar to the less complicated movies?

Wow, that's a great story, bobc! That is surprising, and sad, that John hated drawing comics. Did he tell you what he did want to do instead of draw comics?

This arc, if anything, works better in the re-reading than it did when it was first printed. I seem to recall a number of unfortunate deadline-doom interruptions and delayed shipments throughout the storyline (checkin' at Gohn's Pharmacy every Tuesday, wondering what in the world the hold-up was!). And then, I think, there were two issues of filler-stories immediately after? So we were left with a roomfull of barely-alive Avengers for months, wondering who made it, and what the next team would be. The final cover, with Don Blake trying to bring everyone back from the brink of death, is one of my all-time favorites, I must say. There was a fill-in issue during the Korvac story arc, #169. It was an OK story with Cap, Black Panther, and Iron Man. Then, the issue immediately after the conclusion of the Korvac saga, #178, I can only assume was a fill-in. It was one of the worst Avengers stories I have ever read...in the non-Bendis category, anyway. It was basically a solo story starring the Beast. Now, I love the Beast. He is probably one of my two or three favorite Avengers. However, this comic was awful, from the Carmine Infantino art, to the pointless and almost nonsensical story by Steve Gerber. This was a WTF? issue if there ever was one.

My favorite part of the Korvac Saga was when Sentry took him on one on one. Oh wait, that didn't appear in the book. But surely he was there, right? I'm sorry, I just don't think I'll ever get tired of making fun of such a ridiculous conscept. LOL ;D
