I'm sure this has been done before, but I haven't seen it yet, sooooo Pick your top 7 (or dream team!)
(in no order)
1) Cap 2) Vision 3) Wasp 4) She-Hulk 5) Wonder Man 6) Beast 7) Ms. Marvel (not WarBird, maybe Binary)
supporting cast: Wanda & Pietro, Henry Pym semi-regular guest stars: Iron Man extra special guest star: Thor, Hulk...

Black Panther She-Hulk Quicksilver Vision Wasp Scarlet Witch
You know, actually I like just about all the Avengers from the 60's, before the Avengers got over-populated. I think the Beast made a great Avenger and so did the She Hulk. Both of those characters were pretty low on the radar screen until they became Avengers. I never liked Hellcat as an Avenger, only because I felt she was pretty much a big zero in the power department. She did have a great personality though!

Dream Team (any characters): Captain America Namor (Original)Human Torch Spitfire Union Jack Hawkeye Ms. Marvel
Dream Team (only previous Avengers): Cap Thor IM Ms. Marvel Hawkeye Firestar Wasp (really I could see any of several Avengers in this last slot -- Beast, Hank Pym, Vision, etc)

Dream Team (any characters): Captain America Namor (Original)Human Torch Spitfire Union Jack Hawkeye Ms. Marvel This grouping leads me to wonder whether I missed Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel’s stints in the Invaders…! ;D This would be sweet! Plenty of team dynamics, plots, and conflicts built-in. A writer could do some great stuff by bringing the surviving Invaders en masse into the Avengers. A better split would probably be 4 Invaders (Cap, Spitfire, Torch, Namor) to 3 Avengers (Hawkeye, Firestar, Ms. Marvel). Union Jack is expendable since he is not the original. You could then explore conflicts like: --Cap slipping back towards a "war footing" as a result of the major deja-vu factor --the ex-Invaders "freezing out" the Avengers because they go back further and are tighter as a group. --the clash of organizational cultures between Invaders and Avengers Everyone's still around except The Torch, which isn't a big deal to fix. The Invaders concept has so much potential it's criminal that almost nothing has been done with it. I don't even count New Invaders since that was a pile of crap. RSC

My Top Seven (though not necessarily as a team)
Cap Hawkeye Black Panther Vision The Many Faces of Henry Pym Wonderman and Beast (duos only count for one, right?) Thor
honorable mention: Iron Man, Starfox, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel/Photon
I must admit the the Invaders plus Hawkeye would rock. Not sure if Ms Marvel would be my first choice for the last spot (maybe Vision instead? <HT's body, the name originated in the 40's>).

Invaders have always been one of my favorite childhood reads. It was the original Invaders. I think I'll go start a seperate Invaders post for anyone who wants to discuss this All Winners Squad. ...otherwise I'm going to go off topic here!)

Let's go classic:
Captain America -it's not Avengers without him Thor - real gods don't need to carry guns Iron Man - before he decided he knew better than everyone else Vision - back when he was brooding and powerful, not just a Blackberry Hawkeye - the spirit of the team Scarlet Witch - before she went crazy and f-ed up the Marvel U Black Panther - before he became such a dick
I guess I should just go read back issues huh? Too much has changed for me.

Tana--The Black Panther isn't a "dick" anymore. The last couple of BP issues have been very good, must say. Hudlin seems to have pulled it together and is getting back to the spiritual aspects of the character, the core, instead of making him a black Batman. The heart-shaped herb--all but forgotten in the past couple of decades, even plays a part in the last issue. I have high hopes for the future.

For once, easy picks:
1. Captain America
2. Goliath (the Henry Pym-blue-and-gold-costume version)
3. Hawkeye
4. Hercules
5. Quicksilver (the green-costume version)
6. the Scarlet Witch
7. the Wasp

Quicksilver (the green-costume version) 6. the Scarlet Witch 7. the Wasp This was the full-time roster when I first started to read the Avengers (#45--Herc officially joined in this issue), so I have a special fondness for the characters the Commander listed. But in terms of my favorite Avengers, well, my list is pretty similar to what's above, with couple of post-1967 additions: 1. Scarlet Witch 2. Quicksilver (like his sister, one of the most multi-layered characters in Marvel. I love how Tony Stark characterized them in Earth's Mightiest Heroes--"optimism and skepticism") 3. Clint 4. Vision 5. Hank Pym 6. Cap 7. Black Knight There are several other characters I really like, too, but not necessarily as members of the Avengers, such as T'Challa, Black Widow, and Crystal.

Golly, looks like this thread was "done before" even when it was initiated two & a half years ago! Appreciate the patience of you veteran folks while we newer tykes re-explore some of this ground. I imagine that's probably to be expected. . . .
Now, this does seem to be morphing into a discussion of Favorite Dream Team-- but that's surely fine.
Favorite Avenger: HAWKEYE
Followed by: VISION BLACK KNIGHT WASP CAP SHE-HULK GOLIATH (Hank) BEAST CAPT MARVEL/PHOTON (Monica) . . . . and honorable mention for Herc & Namor when they're on the team together (how is it possible for two characters to INTENSIFY each other's natural arrogance??)
Too many favorites, obviously.
For a dream-team, though? Based purely on how much I enjoy their characters & would like to see them interact:
HAWKEYE WASP VISION SHE-HULK BEAST HERCULES MONICA (probably as the leader, w/ Jan's full support. Quite an unruly classroom she'd have on her hands, here. . . . )

Glad you brought up Namor and Hercules! Remember when the two of them fought over who got the bigger room at the mansion? Hee hee! That was awesome! Those two totally made that whole era! I loved when Hercules kept calling Namor "Prince No-More."

My favorite Seven would now be called fresh. Would have no reason to bring in any rookie that would get overlooked when another writer signs on (thinking of Justice, the one having great Avenger spirit).
Thor Iron Man Ant-Man Wasp Captain America Scarlet Witch Vision
The founders plus two. No room for Hawkeye or my fave Black Widow. When DC long ago brought back the original JLA, I thought Marvel would had done a monkey see, monkey do with the Avengers. Only with no replacements and slowly add in the Kooky Quartet.
If the Red Sox can win the Series, anything is possible.

I imagine that's probably to be expected. . . . I can only speak for myself but I not only have patience for people re-exploring old threads, I enjoy it. Many topics get dropped, not because we get bored with them, but because everyone has weighed in. New voices just open us back up. You're also right that this thread is morphing into a dream team thread which probably should mean it becomes a new thread, but does it really matter? For me, a dream team would actually be plural. I would love to see the West Coast branch reopen. There could be an East and West Coast (Preferably written by someone like Englehart, Busiek, or Stern) and Bendis could keep his New Avengers (Renamed preferably) to keep his fans happy. I wouldn't read it but I could give them that if I could have the other two. The line-ups would be like this if I ran the show. East Coast Captain America (Steve Rogers) Wasp (Jan) Giant Man (Hank) Vision (Restored to his older self) Hercules Pulsar (If that's still what Monica calls herself.) Jocasta West Coast Hawkeye (Clint, not Kate) Mockingbird Wonderman Beast Hell-cat Quicksilver Scarlet Witch (Restored to sanity) Bendis team Dr. Strange Spider-man Wolverine Luke Cage Iron Fist Spiderwoman Ms. Marvel In this perfect world, Thor and the Black Panther (T'Challa) would put themselves on call for both the East and West teams, Ironman would step back for a while and re-examine his life, Tigra, justice, Firestar, and 3D Man would work with a revamped Initiative, and the Young Avengers (Minus the now aged Vision) would get their own regular title that didn't have to randomly include the Runaways. Of course, in my truly perfect world, Bendis wouldn't have his title either but I felt like throwing the current Marvel fans a bone.

Spiderwasp, you are splitting up Vision & the Scarlet Witch? Shame on you. ;-)
I like the idea of a West Coast team (sorry, no Bendis team).
So, I will readjust my East coast lineup, moving Clint and Beast to tha West Coast:
East Coast: 1) Black Panther 2) Captain America 3) Wasp 4) Vision 5) Thor 6) Scarlet Witch 7) She-Hulk Reservist: Hank Pym (Yellowjacket or Ant-Man)
1) Hawkeye 2) Beast 3) Hercules 4) Black Widow 5) Mockingbird 6) Wonder Man 7) Quicksilver reservists: Iron Man and Tigra

Alright, favorite Avenger is easy: Hawkeye (Clint Barton of course).
Now, I have always loved the West Coast Avengers, and even started collecting them before collecting the original Avengers, so that could also add into why I enjoyed Hawkeye so much. As for a "Dream Team", here we go.
Hawkeye - Heart of the team.
Cap - Leader and soul of the team
Thor - Because he is awesome, pure and simple.
Mockingbird - I've always liked the Hawkeye/Mockingbird team.
She-Hulk - Added muscle and always been a fave of mine.
Ms Marvel - Something about her has always been appealing.
Wasp - She would always make for a great second-in-command.
Reservists: Wonder Man, Tigra, and Iron Man.

Spiderwasp, you are splitting up Vision & the Scarlet Witch? Shame on you. ;-) There was a method to my madness. Since the East coast team had Hank, Jan and Jocasta, it already had someone who had been linked to an android and the person the android's brain patterns were modeled after. I thought it would be redundant to have the same thing with Wanda, Simon, and Vision. Since the Jocasta thing was more recent and there was plenty to deal with in just restoring Vision and Wanda to their old selves, the former grouping won out. I also thought Quicksilver would want to be wherever his sister was, Hawkeye and Mockingbird should be together, and it would just be plain old fun to have the Beast reunited with both his old pals, Wonderman and Hell-cat. That pretty much filled up the West Coast team. Wow! I really give this stuff way too much thought.

Another noob weighing in here!
If I had to pick ONE Avenger to be my favorite, it'd have to be Cap. He's just the coolest, and a true Icon.
For my Dream Team, I would go with the 'Issue 4' line-up: Captain America Iron Man Thor Giant Man Wasp
With a touch of: Vision and Scarlet Witch
Thrown in for good measure.
