I thought this was a good two-parter. As to it interrupting the Squadron story, for some reason I got the impression this was a fill-in story because the other stories weren't ready.

This was indeed a great battle Yes, unfortunately, that was Gyrich. My all time least favorite Avengers character. He taints every issue he appears in. Yes, this was Jim Shooter. His first great Avengers arc. I'm not normally a fan of "powering up" but I think it worked well here, giving the Avengers a viable new threat.

I would probably give it more like a 7 out of 10. I thought it was a fun read. I always did hate the way Pietro reacted to Wanda & the Vision's romance. So hypocritical. It just seemed very illogical, even for a hothead like him.
P.S. Don't worry about the spoilers for me. I probably wouldn't have read this if I hadn't already read those issues.

Bendis should just keep his mouth shut and let his cr@ppy writing speak for itself.
I'll admit that the Avengers ranks behind Spider-Man and the X-Men in overall poularity, but there's no shame in that. It's still been one of Marve'l top comics, pretty cinsistently, for nearly 46 years. Not bad.

That is an awesome effort. I think "Bendis rant" deserves its own forum.

I gave it a 6. I like the way they brought Cap back, and they did a good job of building him up into something special, but the plot itself was nothing special.

I liked the Wasp, too. I'd probably choose Cap #1 and Wasp #2.

I'll let you know in a few months, when I get through re-reading everything. I thought the Steve Englehart run was great, but now I inthk I'm enjoying Jim Shooter's stuff even more! I doesn't hurt that he had Perez for much of his run.

I hate the anime style, too. However, I don't think Yu is anime-ish. I think his are is OK. I don't particularly like it, but I don't hate it, either. It's a little sketchy for me, I guess.

You spoke to John Buscema? That's pretty cool. I agree, the Nefaria battle was awesome. I just re-read it last week, in fact.

I like the old 70's Beast. I loved when people called him a talking gorilla. It made me smile. :-) I'm so old school, I even like the unhairy Beast! I do like Tigra, too. I like the way she was portrayed on the cartoon, too.

This is an OK list, but like any such list, has its flaws. Here are my random thoughts: Spidey & Gwen Stacy should absolutely not be #1. Elastic Man & Sue Dibney should be on there, and perhaps Karate Kid and Princess Projectro. Of course, Visions & Scarlet Witch should be higher. :-) I love Batman but I'm not sure him & anybody should be in the to 25. I do like that they ranked Flash & Iris high. It deserves it. I really think Starfire & Nightwing should be in the top 25. How is Superman & Wonder Woman in there. What, did they date for like 2 issues? Green Arrow & Black Canary should be higher. Alicia & Ben should be higher too. Who are Tom Strong and Dhalua Strong?

I'm 40, from Rochester, NY, and have been an Avengers fan since about 1977. I'm mostly a fan of team books (Avengers, X-Men, JLA, Legion of super-Heroes) though I like Batman and the Silver Surfer as well. I've pretty much hated everything Bendis has done, plus Secret Invasion didn't catch my fancy, so I am not too much into the stuff from the past few years. I don't think I'll consider picking up anything until Bendis is off the books.

May favorite is the Wasp. She just seems like a fun, and real, person. She eventually started taking the superhero thing seriously, but always had that other, fun loving side of her. She-Hulk would be my second choice. I love the way she is comfortable in her (green) skin, plus, as nutcase said, she is smart and funny.
When I was younger, Scarlet Witch was my favorite, but that's probably because I thought she was hot. I still like her, but she's only #3 at best now.

Kang is a good choice, but I went with Ultron, largely because of his connection to several of the Avengers. Kang has had some great stories, but ultimately, I would hope that the greatest foe of a 20th/21st century team is not somebody from 40th century.

I thought he had potential, but was too over-the-top and, well, Silver Agey for me. At first I didn't like the way he lost, but in a way it does add depth to the character, that he was so distraught over the apparent death of Judy that he lost control of his awesome power. Did he ever appear again?

The Levitz Legion is my favorite, though anything from the late 60's to the early 90's is great. I am of the opinion that Superboy is not at all necessary. I don't mind if he's there, but I don't care if he's not, also. I am waiting to get Legion of 3 Wolrds in TPB.

OK, this thread is pretty old, so I'm sure most posters now know that Mantis has made a comeback in the Guardians of the Galaxy-one of Marvel's best comics at the moment. It's certainly not the Mantis of old. I did like Mantis back in the day, and the Celestial Madonna, though I think Englehart perhaps fell in love with his creation a bit too much.

I never bought anything from an ad in a comic, though I was always fascinated by sea monkeys, and I thought Big Jim's P.A.C.K. looked kinda cool One of my pleasures in reading back issues is looknig at the old ads.

She also mentioned increased stinging powers somewhere around Avengers #170, and I think that the editors note referenced another comic where that first took place, which one I don't remember. This was during the Shooter era, I think. I'm not generally in favor of "powering up" characters, but I'm glad they did it for Jan. She needed it.

Infantino is the worst Avengers artist, IMO, even though he only did 4 Avengers issues. Funny that people have mentioned a Beast/Wonder Man #203 Infantino issue, but I am currently reading #178, which is a Beast solo Infantino issue. George Tuska is #2 for me, and Don Heck is probably #3.

Interesting observations. I read Essential vol 1 last year and remember some of the points you mention. Wasp is one of my favorite Avengers but did not come off well early on, in the sexist 60's. She was more concerned witrh her hair, or ogling some hot guy, than in fighting crime. Interesting that when she and Hank rejoined, around #150, she was the one that wanted to play superhero again, not him. I was a little glad when Cap got over the Bucky thing. It was a good bit of characterization, but perhaps a bit overplayed.
