W O W
This one is a doozy.
OK The Avengers start off fighting the Lethal Legion and then end up fighting an incredibly augmented Count Nefaria. I've never read this one before.
WOW
Several times I've seen some of you reference him as one of the Avengers toughest foes and I would think 'What he's OK but not that tough'
WOW
Nefaria kicks major Avenger hindparts. This was one of the most fun fights I've read so far. Man alive. He took and took everything they had
Beating the Avengers soundly, whacking the Vision while he was intangible, going toe to toe with Thor and hardly flinching. This was good.
Then at the end rather than writing themselves into a corner and having to use a cheap ploy to get them out, the writers really came up with a suitable and exciting finish.
WOW
couple of other little things 1. Is that Gyrich skulking around Avengers HQ for the first time? Looks like it. 2. The Beast is not satisfied with his contributions to the team. 3. Iron Man's leadership is being called into question 4. A little foreshadowing into the Maximov family tree
Just a really good all around run
I have no choice, and for I believe the first time I give this outing
10 LOONIES OUT OF 10

I believe Nefaria and his amped up power level was a Jim Shooter creation. despite all his drawbacks, Shooter was great on villain detail. Graviton, Nefaria, Michael were all villains who could've given DC level powers like the Legion and Superman a tussle. Yet Nefaria and Grav had their all too human deficiencies which made them even more fun. Shooter did put some character into his world beater villains Not too surprising considering he got an early start with LSH creating these types of Galactus level threats.

Man, this was a great story. These are very well-worn issues in my collection! So many big moments -the building being dropped on the Avengers...Iron Man trying desperately to amp up his power...the arrival of Thor...Wonder Man with Cap's shield..and Vizh dropping like a bomb on Nefaria. When I recall it now it's almost like watching a movie.

It was this storyline that started me on Avengers. After the Nefaria battle I was hooked.

Yep, that was Gyrich's first appearance, kicking off the subplot that Marvel would carry through the 90s.

This was indeed a great battle Yes, unfortunately, that was Gyrich. My all time least favorite Avengers character. He taints every issue he appears in. Yes, this was Jim Shooter. His first great Avengers arc.

His first great Avengers arc. I'm not normally a fan of "powering up" but I think it worked well here, giving the Avengers a viable new threat.
