After Cap, who makes the best leader? Or, when was your favorite period in Avengers history when Cap either wasn't chairman or wasn't in the book?

For my favorite, look just over to the left of this entry! :-)
The thing I liked about Iron Man being chairman during Shooter's run was that Cap was still a member of the team, and he had to go along with Shellhead's orders. They nearly came to blows so many times. It was very entertaining.
Favorite quote from that era, from Cap, to Iron Man, when Cap got aggravated with him and got all in his face: "I've trashed dozens of armored foes! You're just one more!"
I think that was about the time I quit liking Cap very much. Ha. ;D

Yes. It's nice when Cap is around and not the leader. The Avengers sometimes turn into Cap's team, and I don't like it that way.
My pick is Captain Marvel. She took the chairmanship at Cap's recommendation, and he followed her orders for a couple issues -- I think -- before she took over. She was great.
Ok, least favorite chairman -- who could it be besides that traitorous Dr. Druid.
Speaking of him -- did he ever return from the limbo that claimed him and Nebula just before issue 300?

I thought the books during Captain Marvel's as well as the Wasp's tenures were good. Much of that had to do with my immense love for John Buscema's and Tom Palmer's art, though.

I agree with Wasp and Captain Marvel (now Photon unless things have changed again). I would have liked to see more Thor in charge though. Hawkeye was a good leader as well, for the WCA.

Who should be the chair but hasn't?

SpiderMan ;D No, just kidding, don't think he is suited for command. Can't think to anyone specific, all those who come to mind have been leaders at some point. Maybe the Black Panther or Black Knight, since he is suited to war after having fought in the Crusades (even though he often misjudges situations and people).

first question- I think the Wasp made the best chairman, period, even better than Cap. Others had a tendancy to underestimate her leadership abilitie and she used that to her favor. She was highly competent and effective. It also made her character more likable than her ditsy persona.
second question- I would have liked to see Black Panther as a chairman for a while. He has great strategic skills and a very sharp mind.

Agreed with the others who picked the Wasp. Jan really came into her own as a multi-layered character.

The Wasp. I thought Roger Stern made her a bit too bossy (she came across a bit too much like Mrs Thatcher sometimes). I liked Shooter's characterization where she uses her flightiness and feminine wiles to rule! I liked the idea that she'd run the Avengers in the same way she runs her fashion empire.
I did also like the leadership conflict between Cap and Shellhead that Van mentioned.
I picked up a copy of Avengers 'Initiative' a few days ago (it's been a while) and Ms.Marvel was in charge. This seems a good idea and long overdue though considering how the character's been abused over the years it's not all that surprising (I won't say what I thought about the rest of the mag...).

My appreciation for Wasp's leadership period dropped dramatically when, during Secret Wars, all she could do was worrying for her hairs/nails/make up >_<
Except for this bit, I liked a lot what Shooter and Stern did with her.

Yeah, I never liked the way Shooter handled her, but my impression of him is that he's very much got that old world mentality, where women were around to serve as decoration. She could be chairperson as long as she still acted ditsy enough not to threaten any male egos. I thought Wasp was a much better chairperson later on. She was decisive and authoritative but also compassionate. After Cap, she's my favorite leader.

I think you may underestimate Shooter's writing of her in this period. I think he wrote the Wasp as having a light touch on the surface but tough underneath in a 'girl power' kind of way (I also loved it when she decked Moondragon). Whilst the character development we saw from Stern was perfectly plausible (and by no means one dimensional) in the context I preferred the more cunning style Jan that Shooter gave us and I was happy when in WCA Byrne revived a bit more of her joie de vivre. The full on feminist schtick was surely Ms. Marvel's thing which of course Shooter wrote a bit of back in the 170's.
P.S. I seem to recall that Jan handled Magneto rather well during Secret Wars, making him look a complete thingy.

I see we have automatic censoring.
The gist of what I meant was that he looked like a fool. You can use your imaginations to figure out what term I originally used!

Why yes, Cowl, we've all had our fun with the censor from time to time. Shiryu had to fix it up so that we could discuss Dave Cockrum and not Dave Thingyrum!!

If you’re afraid the autocensor will cock things up, you can easily slip past it if you know how.

Let's not forget censors exist for a reason Feel free to elude them for authors' names, like Cockrum, or similar instances, but other than that stay polite

Yeah, there's something amazing about the Wasp screaming orders while three inches tall. I really liked the Vision as well.
What about the Scarlet Witch? Wanda had the deputy leadership at the start of Vol. 3, but has she ever been chairperson?

I liked the Wasp, too. I'd probably choose Cap #1 and Wasp #2.
