I liked Yellowjacket the best, probably, but also liked him as Giant Man. When he was stuck at 12 feet as Goliath, I thought he was a little too low-powered and liked it better when he was in almost the same league as Thor and Iron Man. I've gotta disagree with Giant man being the "most practical" mainly because he was a huge target, frankly. Did you all like Hawkeye as Goliath? Huge target? You're a glass half empty kind of guy, aren't you? Even though Ant-Man is my fave, I think clearly you'd want the strength of a 12 plus foot tall guy in about 90% of all battles. Clint as Hawkeye is my favorite version of him, but yes, I did like him as Goliath. For some reason, I think he is a better fit as a giant than Hank, actually. Maybe I have some stereotype that a giant shouldnt be a cerebral type? By the way, my favorite Goliath/Giant-Man costume was the blue one with the yellow stripes.

By the way, Ultron69 -- welcome! I see you've been busy spelunking around here. Thanks for your contributions! You've virtually revitalized the boards all by your lonesome these past two days !! Thank you! :-) I'm currently rereading all of my Avengers, so I was pretty happy when i discovered this site.

Kang controls Iron Man. Iron Man kills some people, including Yellowjacket 2. It was bad enough to get retconned, at least partially.

This is tough for me. All of his identities has merit. The Giant-Man/Goliath are the most practical for a superhero, Yellowjacket is the identity he's had the longest (and his coolest costume) and the scientist adventurer fits because I think that Hank has always been a scientist first and a superhero second. However, since the question is "who is the definitive Hank Pym" I think I have to go with Ant-Man. This is Hank at his core to me. In this identity, I think he's still a scientist, and has to use his wits more to succeed than as a giant. Also, the aforementioned cover of #161 is what comes to mind first for me when I think of Hank (maybe because it was my first ever Avengers comic!). Plus, like someone pointed out, most of the bad stuff has happened in his Yellowjacket identity. When I think of Ant-Man, I think of stability (or what passes for it with Hank) and I do think of a scientist, a guy shrinking and communicating with ants.

Truly one of the all-time great Avengers covers!!! And my favorite Wonder Man suit, too! I agree! Especially the part about the Wonder Man suit. In fact, I mentioned this suit in the "Favorite and Least Favorite Looks for Avengers" thread. What a coincidence!

I do like his stuff on Green Lantern and Legion of 3 Worlds (except all of the gratuitous deaths) in addition to his ACtion Comics Legion arc. Plus, he has the distinct advantage of not being Bendis.

I can't believe that any of you actually believe Bendis read that storyline "the first time around." It is blatantly obvious to me that Bendis never read any Avengers comics before taking over and destroying this book (or maybe he read one or two over the years). If he had--the characters he's destroyed would have shown SOME resemblance to what had gone before, if for no other reason than simple osmosis. I think Bendis is pretending to be a fan for appearances. Look at Millar's work--it is glaringly obvious he was/is a huge longtime Avengers fan and Marvel fan. When he changes a character he always plays off the original and puts a new spin on him or her--he doesn't just throw everything out like garbage. I mean come on Bendis--stop pretending. LOL I think you are right.

I love the Vision, and I think that perhaps Steve Englehart handled him best.

I thought it was nicely done. He died thinking himself a loser, and trying to win back the love of Mantis. Rather touching. It's intersting that he used to be so cocky and arrogant as a villain, but that was appearently a facade as he was a pretty vulnerable, insecure guy as an Avenger.

That is an awesome poster! I think I like: 1) purple one above Moondragon's head best, then 2) the purple one second up from the bottom left corner (next to Namor?) 3) the blue skirted one below Mockingbird's foot 4) the red & yellow one in the top left forner (above Machine Man?)
One costume missing from that poster is an orange one she wore in the late 70's, with W's at the neckline, and I think also at the belt and boots. Oh well, you'd probably need a whole giant size comic to capture all of the costumes she's worn!

I do think that Hank has gotten a bit of a bum rap over the years, both from writers and from fans. Still he has always been a bit of a hothead. I do wish he'd just get back to being a scientist type, without all of the baggage that writers feel like heaping on him.

Maybe whatever brain malfunction it is that makes Bendis thnk the Korvac Saga wasn't very good is the same thing that prevents him from writing good Avengers stories.

Bendis is an idiot. He is, IMHO, one of the worst Avengers writers ever. I stopped buying Avengers because of him. I just finished reading the Korvac Saga, and I think it holds up very well, especially for a comic from 1977 or therabouts. Maybe Bendis feels the need to bash an Avengers classic because he knows he will never write one.

I recently read these issues. They really glossed over Hank's recovery. At the end of "Bride of Ultron" they say something like "Hopefully Tony Stark's technology can help Hank recover" then, a couple of issues later, one of the Avengers (I don't remember who, my memory sucks) mentions in passing that Hank is recovering well and should be back in action in a couple of weeks, or something like that. Then, the next issue (#165?) Yellow Jacket is back in action, with absolutely no explanation.

I am reading though all of my Avengers, and I'm on #177 right now. I am now looking forward to #189! I do like the occasional light fill-in issue, and I do miss the fun that comics from the 70's and 80's had in them, not to mention the classic ads!

Favorites: Wonderman- I liked the yellow, green, and red costume he wore for a very short time in the 160's. The Beast had actually made it for him! Unfortunately, he only had it for a very short time before it got destroyed and he switched to civies for a long time. :-( Vision-classic look Hank Pym-Probably Yellow Jacket, though Ant-Man is pretty cool too Clint-Hawkeye Wasp-I don't know. she's had so many, and most of them pretty nice, IMO
Least favorites: Wonder Man-He's had a lot of bad costumes, but the civies (red safari jacket and sunglasses)are probably my least favorite Hawkeye- shirtless Goliath Hank Pym- shirtless Goliath/Giant Man Iron Man-The original clunky gray one, of course Wasp- Her first costume, with that goofy helmet.

I agree with Starfoxx. Perez is my all time favorite artist, too. His stuff is just beautiful and realistic. I am not a fan of the stylized stuff.

I think my very first comics were funny (Richie Rich, Casper, Archie) and I don't specifically remember those, but I do remember my first issues of superhero comics: 1st superhero comic: Fantastic Four #172 (Thing vs. the Destroyer) 1st Avengers comic: Avengers #161 (Beware the Ant-Man!) 1st X-Men: #117 1st JLA: #159

At three issues, it may be too short for Marvel to bother with reprint in in color. I don't know. It was a very good arc, though. Shooter's tenure got off to a so-so start with Graviton (OK villain, but too over the top and silver-agey for me), then got better quickly with the bride of Ultron story, and continued its momentum with Nefaria, before heading into the classic Korvac saga. If oyu really want them in color, you might be able to pick up the back issues online for a reasonable price, unless you're holding out for the high quality paper & ink.

Perez is #1 on my list. His stuff from the 160's through #202, especially. I'd probably put Byrne second. Neal Adams is great, but like someone else pointed out, he only did four issues.

Even though I hate time travel stories, I LOVE Kang. He was deep, even back before supervillains had depth. Throw in the Squadron Sinister, and that is just whipped cream and a cherry on my hot fudge sundae. Plus the cover of #71 is one of my all time favorites.
