I managed to pick up issues 6-19 of Kirby's 70's series. For the most part, I thought it was very good. The first dozen issues are entertaining and interesting, then the series takes a bit of a dip from issues 14-16, then the last few issues are good again until it gets cancelled. It's a shame that Kirby never got to tie up some of the loose ends, though Roy Thomas attempted to in some Thor issues. I think Kirby does present some interesting ideas here, especially the Uni-Mind. I'd say give it a shot.
Now that you mention Kirby's Fourth World, that is something that I've been meaning to read myself.

I've had dreams where I was in a comic shop, but I don't remember if I actually acquired anything or if I sadly woke up before I could. HB's Saturday morning cartoon dreams sound interesting, though.

Mid-90s AVENGERS for 25-cents apiece? Yeah, you got ripped off. Very sad about the closing of your LCS. I grieve with you. I'm lucky in that I've got a lot of LCS's near me. I still haven't seen Ant-Man, though of course it's on my to-do list. I've never seen, or really even heard of, motion comics, but it sounds interesting.

Wow, I never read the daily comic strips anymore (haven't bought a newspaper in years) and didn't know that there was still Spider-Man strip. I'm not surprised it still is, but I'm fairly shocked at the creators listed, especially Stan the Man. Go Stan! I think this would be worth checking out, if only for Namor's his old blue/black vested togs.

Yes, I found it interesting how Hank was beloved, and even had groupies, as an Avenger. Rest assured, if he'd been a member of Claremont's X-Men, those groupies would have had pitchforks and torches instead.

Oh, I count the Beast as one of my all time favorite Avengers, too, but it seemed to me that he didn't really contribute much as a superhero, though he did of course have a lasting impression in other ways, especially to us fans.

I'm definitely on board with Hellcat! She was a member in some of the first back issues I started collecting, very shortly after discovering my LCS (I started collecting Avengers at the newsstand with #161) and was a character I really enjoyed, even more so when she was with the Defenders.
Since we're talking about characters who weren't properly used in the Avengers, I'd add Patsy's good buddy Hank McCoy. He mostly cracked jokes nonstop while with the Avengers, was usually the first one knocked out in a fight, and even didn't get a chance to show his brilliance. I remember an issue where a few of the other Avengers big brains are working on some problem (I believe Hank Pym, Black Panther were there, and maybe one or two other big brains) and they ignored Mr. McCoy, who wound up walking dejectedly out of the room. His friendship with Wonder Man was the most memorable part of his Avengers run.

I've never heard Intemperant as a Barfly, but I like it!
I definitely agree with you on Rage, Jocasta and Jack of Hearts being mishandled characters with potential. I've never heard of Century or Lionheart, and I'm on the fence about Sandman and the Human Torch. I agree that the Human Torch is the natural choice, perhaps the only choice, as leader. I see your point about Jocasta, but she seemed to much the shrinking violet to be a leader. I think they'd need somebody more vocal and forceful than she.

I'm with Starfoxxx on not knowing what it is in the comic shop that the young people are paying attention to. I go there strictly to look for inexpensive (primarily) Bronze Age back issues, and the occasional TPB.
The one character that would have made my top ten (bottom ten?) is Tigra. She seemed pretty useless to me, and I never bought into her shtick. I also agree that Starfox doesn't belong on the list, I kinda liked his time with the Avengers, but he seems to be the butt of easy jokes, probably because of his pleasure stimulating power. I'm not too familiar with most of the really lousy Avengers, because I stopped collecting comics at that point, and what I've seen since comic back doesn't make me want to pick up too many Avengers issues from the past 25 years, but Sentry does seem like a lousy invention (I especially hate the "he was really here all along bit. By the way, didn't Quesada say "now we have our own Superman" when he was introduced?) and I didn't mind Rage, but I've only got a small number of his earlier appearances, and I' sure that HB's criticisms are spot on. Wolverine is clearly a money grab. Having him in the Avenges is just stupid. Well, it's made Marvel a lot of money, so maybe stupid isn't the right word. Stupid like a fox, I guess.

Oh, what started as a rant has turned into a wonderful trip down memory lane! I remembered the Hulk ad as soon as HB mentioned it, and the X-Men, Micronauts, and Shogun Warriors ads that Marvel Boy posted bring back some memories, plus the mention of the Electric Company. I had one issue of Spidey super stories back in the day. Heck, you can occasionally find those in the dollar bins.

Egad! You´re on to my subtle, yet well crafted plans for world domination! After all, the world´s a stage. I´m afraid you know too much now, friend. However, a theather company may well prove too much drama for my taste (horrible pun fully intended...). So I may be persuaded to let you live, for now (Black Forest Cake would be a suitable bribe, hint, hint...). And now, in the immortal words of Snagglepuss, "Exit, stage left!". Oooo-- Completely-- completely-- distracted by your mere mention of Black Forest Cake--- ! Now, my crew and I are very taken these days with the impossibly-delicious, life-span-shortening Chocolate Tuxedo Mousse Cake that Costco produces in their bakery. We'll fabricate special events just to have a reason to go and get one. . . (two larges slices, and your eyeballs start to spin around in their sockets. . . ) HB Well, I'm glad there aren't any Costco's near where I live!

I'm always up for some Bendis bashing. I started collecting comics again for the first time in over 15 years back in 2008. The very first titles I dropped were the two Bendis Avengers titles, Mighty and New. They were just awful-soooo boring. I didn't even realize at that point that he'd wrecked the Avengers, so I didn't really have an anti-Bendis bias at that point. Bendis is basically the Anti-Christ to any true Avenger fan (meaning anyone who shares my opinion).
OK, Bendis can write good dialogue, or at least realistic sounding dialogue, but he tends to ignore previous characterization and previous comics history. He should probably write screenplays or TV shows instead, where he can just write dialogue and not worry about wrecking previous continuity.

Ultron69, that sounds intriguing--would love to know more about it, either the issue number (if you have time to check) or more of the context. Btw the T'Challa pic I posted is from 1970-- my Golden Age Hmm, I will have to remember to look for that. Don't expect it any time soon, though!

OK, here's another favorite male Avenger "moment" of mine. And Bobc, I know you like T'Challa and John Buscema--so this one's for you! The young T'Challa from Avengers #77, Buscema/Palmer art. Gotta love those Buscema cheekbones. I'd have to look for it, but it was probably around this time that there was a page where the Black Panther was relaxing at Avengers Mansion by reading some poetry, IIRC. That was one if the things that made me like him, aside from the cool look.

Belated happy birthday to bobc & humanbelly!
HB, I'm glad your tale had a happy ending. I was going to say you could email your mom a link to it, but it worked out anyway. By the way, I actually saw a Giant Superhero Holiday Grab-Bag Marvel Treasury Sized Special for $10 at the LCS, but I don't think it was the one you asked for, so I guess I don't feel bad that I didn't pick it up for you.

My memory stinks, but Hawkeye probably has most of my favorite male moments. There was the time when he was the last Avenger standing against the Collector, there is the time he defeated She-Hulk in that Avengers/WCA Annual crossoever with the Grandmaster & Death, there is the moment that Spiderwasp shows above...I know there are a few other times when Hawkeye was hopelessly outgunned, but managed to use his guile and resourcefulness to save the day.

So, basically, it looks like he gets army boots, making him look more militant, like so many other heroes of the past 20 years. Meh. nk There does seem to be a subtler shift in play, too, though. You're right, he has a much more military/commando look, which I think can also be attributed to an apparent change in what SF's outfit might actually be made of. He's always been one of those single-piece, ultra-skin-tight (nothin' left to the imagination--! *ahem*), spandex union-suit types. This outfit does appear to be constructed from different panels and pieces of a thicker, bulkier material, with obvious seams where they join. Actually, a pretty good job on the artist's part conveying something like this. Boots- legitimate, practical boots? Sure-- heck yes. Realistic superhero footwear is long past due for its place in the sun! HB Yes, it's more functional and more realistic, but a lot less fun and pleasing to the eye, IMHO, which is one of the things I read comics for. Also, somebody as powerful as Starfox doesn't need real boots. He could walk around barefoot and his tootsies won't get hurt. Somebody like Cap could use those boots (though I'm thinking they'd slow him down which might one reason we don't see martial artists & ninjas in the movies wearing boots).

But nevertheless, I can't wait to see the movie (and X-men DOFP, too). Abnett and Lanning's series remains my favorite "modern" series....and the movie reinforces my frustration that the series was CANCELLED....and the kicker is----that D-bag Bendis got to take over the franchise, and will probably reap the benefits of A&L's creativity. When I tried collecting new comics back in 2008, DNA's G of G series was one of the very few titles that I really enjoyed. Also, Bendis' Avengers titles were the very first thing I dropped. So, yeah, I'm with you on this.
