I've only read the Guardians in the Korvac saga ^^'' The diamond guy seemed interesting, but I have no idea of his powers or personality (or name!).

Let's see Avengers: Thor and Captain America. They would bring sheer power, strategic and leadership skills to the team. Are used to work together and have a good knowledge of both earth and cosmic threats. Fantastic Four: Invisible Woman, her force fields are very good to protect the whole team (as opposed to Cap's shield which is only effective in protecting him), and she could be useful in stealth missions. X-Men: I'm not even sure who was around in those years. I think Angel could be a good addition, since he has more aerial manouvrability than Thor and could save the team from some tight spots. The alternative would be Nightcrawler, for his unique teleporting powers. Defenders: As for the X-Men, too many people became Defenders at some point. Sticking to the core ones, the choice for me would be between Namor (who is powerful on land and extremely so in water) and Dr. Strange, whose skills and knowledge of the occult could come in handy. For personality and adaptability to team life, I go for Strange. Indepentent: Spider-Man. He has a knowledge of almost every enemy, is good in hand to hand contact, has some scientific knowledge, could go with the Invisible Woman in stealth missions help for the team's morale.
So my roster would be Thor, Cap, Invisible Woman, Angel, Dr.Strange, Spider-Man. The main weakness I can see is the lack of a real high level scientist, but otherwise I'd say it would be a strong team.

They don't! I suppose they sell to not members too, but combining the real price and the shipping it would end up more or less the same as buying them here.

I enjoyed the first 2 Marvel Zombies series very much, but I have mixed feelings on this one, mostly for the impact on continuity. Seeing Morbius without an arm and the X-Men guy apparently dead worries me for what is to happen (I always liked the Living Vampire).
Still, it's fun to see what the criminals did after the zombified heroes left the planet. Impressive that Kingpin managed to resist the urge of eating his wife.

I totally agree with Tana! Great book, fun and straightforward, with no moral ambiguity and very good art. I wish there were more old school stories like this

I hope Shiryu doesn't think I'm going on his turf for doing this, but I thought it'd be fun to see what everyone thought of other big Avenger issues! Of course not! I can't believe I hadn't posted in this topic before, but I'm glad you did. And exalt to Sharkar, whose knowledge of what was going on at Marvel in the Silver Age never ceases to amaze me As for the issue, I think it's a story that worked at the time, when the concept of Avengers was still being formed, but wouldn't now. In a way, now we are more refractory to new members, for most of us the ideal team would only have big names from the past, and the standards to be "Avengers material" have become much higher. On the other hand, the pace was rather slow and I remember to think that the bickering between Cap and Clint was pretty boring, so a 6 for me.

I have seen the first 8 episodes, then dropped it. For me it was ok, definitely behind the old X-Men cartoon from the '90s but overall not too bad. However it received some very bad reviews on websites.

Yeah, in these days the moral line is much thinner than what it used to be. In the past heroes would try to save *everyone*, be them innocents, criminals, aliens etc. Obviously there was the occasional victims, but I recall entire space battles without a single life lost on panel. After having seen Gwen dying in his arms at the hands of the Goblin, Spedey even stopped scared at what he was about to do.
Now however, we have heroes shooting, ripping eyes out, swearing they will kill this and that almost all the time. The entire meaning of killing some has gone down from "something you never do, no matter what" to some sort of understandable act given the circumstances.
In many ways, if the past heroes could see their present selves, they would react like Superman does with the "new heroes" in Kingdome Come.

Hi, kids -- I received a mailer from the Science Fiction Book Club two days ago -- enrollment deal was 7 books for a buck, buy 4 over the next 2 years. So I found my handy-dandy code, went on their website (www.sfbc.com) and scored $250 worth of very cool stuff for my hard-earned dollar plus about $15 S&H. Here's my haul: Marvel Chronicle Avengers: The Ultimate Guide from D/K Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier Bat-Manga (new book by Chip Kidd about Batman comics in Japan during the time of the tv show) Conan: The Ultimate Guide from D/K and authored by Roy Thomas The DC Comics Encyclopedia - updated and expanded edition The Marvel Encyclopedia How's that?? I'll bet that box weighs about 15 pounds when it arrives! Happy reading to me! ;D So, it was a wonderful deal financially for me -- I am sure their online enrollment is similar to what I'd seen earlier, with 5 books for $5. Sorry, I'm not sure I understood it correctly. Do you mean that by enrolling with them you can buy the 7 books above only for a dollar each? If so, how much is the enrollment, and do you know if they accept foreign members? ;D

I fixed the link If this is all the evidence, then it could still be up in the air. In fact, it could even be a joke, sort of "I'd rather join the Gay and Lesbian Alliance then the Great Lakes Avengers"

I have added the latest polls' results Quasar (6), original Human Torch (5), Sandman (4), Sersi (3), Spider-Man (2 ) and Rage (1). I haven't added Stingray and Living Lightning yet, since their polls aren't strongly going in one direction yet and are quite recent.

I haven't read WCA yet, so no vote for the moment. I didn't know about his change in sexuality though. I hope the throwaway panel mentioned by FreedomFighter is not referred to when he was stuck in the Avenger's space station with Quasar for months ^^''

3. Leasing Hydrobase was his biggest contribution, but I do wish he'd have seen more action with the team. Ditto

1 His family situation and personality where somewhat interesting, but on the long run is the "angry black guy" all over again. Also I've never read the Warriors, so don't know him outside his few Avengers books.

And for me! A couple more and it will be "Spiderwasp for president" I gave him 4, agreeing with what Spiderwasp said. Obviously a lot of it is on potential, but had it been explored we would have had some good stories I think. Besides his powers are like no other's in the team

I wonder about that. Bucky's Cap seems to have been so popular and succesfull sales-wise, that I do from time to time fear it will be a very long while before Steve is back. In fact, if he is not back around the time his movies comes out, I will start to worry he won't be for years.
As for the lack of success, in Italy Cap is certainly not very popular, and when I asked people why, one of the most common replies was "just look at his name, he is just a propaganda character", and sadly trying to highlight the times when his book actually criticized the government, like in the DeMatteis years, didn't work.
Besides, just judging from what I see around boards, or talking to people and patients, today's attitude towards crime and the likes is almost "kill them all". I remember several books in the 80s where Spider-Man would risk his own life jumping between two criminals fighting each other only to prevent one of them from being killed, because his life had a value, even if he was a super criminal. Cap did it too in the Scourge of the Underworld storyline, and it was nice to see heroes trying to protect life in its every form. Now however it seems to have become lame or too "goody goody", and as the embodiment of those values, Cap seems to have become outdated.
As for Superman, I have never followed his book, but I suppose he has movies, tv series and cartoons to keep him up. Also he looked rather violent in Infinite Crisis last year, but I don't know if it was just the crossover portrayal.

I don't know in terms of present vs past, but according to the Diamond Comics website from a couple of weeks ago, in September (or even October) Marvel had 50% of the comics market against 25% by DC. That's a huge difference, they are earning twice as much Regarding the price increase, being used to buy them over here, where they are more expensive than $2.99 anyway, it doesn't make a huge difference (and I doubt it's to do with importing, mangas have several times the amount of pages (200/250 vs 25/30) and are still pretty low-priced). A whole dollar does however look like a fairly high jump. Math has never been my thing but it's a 30% increase, isn't it? Price increases used to be in the range of cents from what I remember, not entire dollars.

3, largely because I have never read an Invaders book before, so I know little to nothing of his chemistry with Cap and the others. Plus the whole "ex war comrades" theme probably wouldn't last too long, while the "man out of his time" one has already been done with Cap himself.
On the plus side, he has powers that are surprisingly rare in the team, which over the years hasn't had that many fire characters.

4 She has some extremely useful powers and a peculiar personality. I also didn't find the Gatherers storyline that bad when I read it last year, but it was probably helped by the fact that I could read one issue after the other. On the downside, she hasn't been around too long, and I suppose she would become difficult to manage over a period of time.

I still hand't voted in this one. Gave Quasar a 6. He hasn't been around that often, and his longer stint was in a not too glorious period for the group, but I like his powers and personality.

According to his imdb profile, he has directed some Shakesperian adaptations among other things, so it should be interesting!
I see what Favreau means about Thor's movie being pivotal for the success of the Avengers. He is so different from the other science-oriented characters that he hardly seems to fit in. Then again, Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Harry Potter series made the fantasy genre succesfull again, so there is hope.
