Wow--my two earliest memories of comics involved the issue of the Avengers where the Vision just walks downwards through a sidewalk (issue 70-something I think), and then apparently these issues of the Hulk. I am gonna have to grab those issues the next time I go to my beloved Austin Books. Thanks HB--you have solved a mystery of a lifetime for me!!
HB--You are the Poster of the Eon, in my book. The proud Lion of Asgard, Volstag, once again proves his mettle!
I demand that HB be removed form the reservist list and made legit!!!!

Hee hee! I'd take my chances in Iran!
Hey HB--I have a question. You have mentioned this Hulk issue before. I recall from when I was really, really young, some Marvel comic that had the bad Inhumans in it--including a guy who was part tree and had sticks for fingers. Decades later I still have not found out what comic it was--but I now know it wasn't the Avengers or FF. Could this be it? I am assuming the comic I'm talking about probably came out in the late 60's since it was part of my 3rd Grade friend's older brother's collection. I think there was also an Inhuman who was part horse.
Can you help?

Man look at that beautiful John Buscema art on the Silver Surfer comic! This is what I meant when I said JB was incapable of drawing an awkward human pose. Look at the movement captured in Thor's form! I mean he really, really looks like he's going to bat the Surfer out of the stadium! One of the simplest, most striking and all around BEST covers ever to grace a comic book. As an artist, I can tell you that capturing that sense of windup and motion is so frikkin' hard--especially when capturing it that well!
Contrast that to the Kirby Thor cover. I love Kirby, but his human anatomy could be a little stiff. I just want to redraw Thor's mid-section to sag down a little!!! Poor Thor must be experiencing rigor mortis!

Human belly--do you mean like Sgt Fury calling Reed Richards a "bunghole?"

Right on, Human Belly.
There is a DISGUSTING lack of nobility in Marvel characters these days. I will say that Hudlin, in the past year, has made the Black Panther and Storm noble again, but beyond that...

Me too, SW!! I love grade Z characters!
You know the folklore of "real" African voodoo is fascinating--a good writer could do a lot with Brother Voodoo. The first thing I'd do is change his name though--it's a little dated

Come on Tana! Brother Man had that 70's black exploitation thing going on! Like when Luke Cage used to call everybody, male or female, "Sugar!" It was super bad!
Yeah Bendis has made yet another of his uhhhh "creative" re-workings of a Marvel character. I can't wait to see the pimply-faced fan boys gushing over how ingenious this is.

God for once I'm not the most obnoxious about Bendis!! Hee hee! DL I was gonna say the same thing--that Marvel has been in "creative retreat" for a while now.
So I see ol' Baldy is once again wiping the slate clean on an interesting character (Brother Voodoo) and replacing it with crap. BV had a very distinctive past and was one of those Marvel characters that never really got the attention he deserved. But making him the Sorcerer Supreme? That is just stupid. BV is from a whole different realm.
Will someone make bendis go away? PLEASE

I'm with you Starfoxx. I work out 5 times per week, can bench 350 lbs, weight almost exactly what I did in college ( 6'2" 225 lbs), love Ultimate fighting, fishing, hiking, fossil hunting and in general can't stand science fiction. But I love comic books! What can I say? It's like one thing I have from when I was a kid that I still love. I love the whole genre. To me it's an art form--and art form which is dying.
I think pop culture in general has sunk about as low as it can. Between gangsta rap and Paris Hilton and Octomom and Dr. Phil, where is there left to go? I'm really enjoying Big Love Season 2 but beyond that the intellectual horizon is looking pretty damned spare.
My new video game Ghostbusters came out today, however, and it is cool! Fun in a dumb 80's kinda way. Nothing wrong with that.

I think you're right, Woodside. To me, Loeb really is an old school writer in the sense that Busiek is old school (not saying he's as good, he just writes in a similar vein)--pretty conventional super hero stories. When he sticks to that, I like what he does (The Defenders vs the Offenders is okay, kinda fun). But he always has to throw in dismemberment or cannabalism or vulgar curse words or what appears to be underage sex--and it just comes off desperate to me.

Hank--I agree completely. I found the hysterical nervous breakdowns over the fact that Hank slapped Jan once really phony and stupid. Nobody was condoning what happened but people make mistakes and the way that one moment has defined that character for decades is asinine--particularly when you compare it to the fact that male characters were constantly beating the crap out of each other every issue, year in year out. And how many times have female superheroes slapped male superheroes? Happens all the time. In fact, Black Canary just punched the Green Arrow in the face for "embarrassing her" a month or two ago and no one batted an eye.
Political Correctness infantilizes women and minorities, which is why I despise it.

Sigh. All true, I'm afraid. This is why I spend my time these days fossil hunting--and spend my time with fellow fossil hunters. We understand each other and have such an appreciation of history--and I'm not talking just fossils either.
As Ricki Lee Jones once wrote "This world is turning faster than it did when I was young..."

I could go for Nightcrawler being an Avenger.
But seriously guys--aren't there already like 200 Avengers? Isn't that enough? I know we're just discussing things theoretically, but I would hate to see the Avengers having 500 members while great unused Avengers members float in limbo.

I suppose it's all in how the gore is handled. I think Millar pulls it off with some class and it never seemed gratuitous to me. Sometimes it was funny--like when he did The Authority. But when Loeb does it he seems to over-do it and handle it in a low class way. Also--I saw Millar's Ultimates as a very distinct, separate thing to the mainstream Marvel Universe, so I didn't mind him killing off a character or two. But now the Ultimate Universe seems to have swallowed the old Marvel and there's very little distinction between the two. Oh well nothing lasts forever

well I'm sorry his son died of cancer--I didn't know that. That is horrible. I mean that sincerely.
Anyway--I was actually enjoying this issue of Ultimatum--Finch's art is beautiful as usual--but when Nick Fury said "I was wondering when you bungholes would show up" I could just feel my mental tires screeching to an unceremonious halt! If Beevis and Butthead had said it, I wouldn't have batted an eye. But Nick Fury? Come on. That is just stupid, vulgar and unnecessary.
And this whole dismemberment/cannibalism is getting to be every issue with this guy. What the hell is going on? I really don't want to see the Wasp or the Angel eaten. Is this what constitutes storytelling?

This is an opinion forum, Freedom. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on Marvel and I'm sure you have too--so whoever doesn't like it, doesn't have to read it.
The people in my office here were just talking about people who "fail upwards" in the video game field. It is universal in this genre.
I've been reading comics a long time and seen the good, bad and mediocre--but Loeb is the only writer who has creeped me out, unintentionally. I felt the same way when he wrote Ultimates--some of those "romantic scenes" between Thor and his girlfriend made me feel like I'd downloaded kiddie porn.
Maybe I'm just an old man but I think comics should have some decency. As film director John Waters once said "There is good bad taste, and bad bad taste. You have to have really good taste to appreciate good bad taste."

Hey Guys--how do you feel about Loeb's tenure at Marvel so far? I mean besides his disastrous run on Ultimates?
The reason I ask is I just picked up the latest issue of Ultimatum or whatever the hell it is--and Loeb has Sabertooth biting the angels wings off as the Angel's eyes roll back in his head. Then he has Valkyrie/Thor girl/whoever-the-hell-she-is chopping off Magneto's arm.
And last but not least, Loeb has Nick Fury, leader of SHIELD calling Reed Richards and company "bung-holes."
Is this guy mentally deficient or something? I mean seriously--is this guy just off, mentally? He looks about 50 or so, but some of the stuff he puts in comics gives me the creeps, but not in a good way. I'm no prude--but I think this guy is crossing a line.

RIGHT HUMANBELLY--I am still scratching my head, twenty five years later, as to why such a stunning character as Storm needed a makeover? She'd only been around for a couple of years and it wasn't like she needed a jump-start.
You are so right about the whole Earth Mother thang. I loved how, when Storm was first presented, African villagers thought she was a goddess and wanted to sacrifice animals to her. Now that was novel and cool! Storm also represented the first time a female team member was the most powerful person on the team. It was unheard of at the time! Remember when the X-Men snuck into that military base in like the second or third issue, and a Storm just swept away those soldier by summoning a flood? And Cyclops just sort of stared at her? Now that was an impressive moment

Ultron--as per usual you took the words out of my mouth. For me the real decline of the new X-Men was right around when Dave Cochran (sp) came back to the series (I loved his art on the first few issues and think it is highly under-rated and over-shadowed by Byrne's later work). It was obvious to me that Dave wasn't really trying that hard when he came back and his work looked rushed and gimmicky. And once Storm got a mohawk, the honeymoon was definitely over. I hated the Brood and all that crap.

Cool--HB--hope you like Ghostbusters. I left that company two years ago and farnkly that game shoulda been done two years ago but there was all this drama over changing publishers. I'm just happy that after 4 years it's gonna finally be released. I think it's going to be a very good game. I've already gotten great responses just from what we showed at various trade shows. You can see screenshots from it on my website bobcooksey.net. The graveyard scenes and the Times Square scenes are from Ghostbusters

We'll have to go with what Wonder man says, HB. I don't really follow video games that closely. I don't play them, other than first person shooters. I just make them. My new game Ghostbusters is supposedly coming out this July.
