Mornin' Teammates-
I'm up to issue #41 of New Avengers (playing catch-up football is always harrowing). Since I adamantly refused to spend an extra $30 or so a month trying to keep up with all of the associated mini-series, side-titles, "event" titles, spin-offs, etc, etc.--- I am a trifle unclear about a lot of the details with what I'm reading. Any brief, constructive responses would be most helpful. . . .
1) What was that latest, SHIELD-oriented "Secret War" that's referred to? it happened about two years ago, maybe?
2) Is the order of these endless, world-changing events, then, Secret War, DisAssembled, House of M, World War Hulk, Civil War, Initiative, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign?
3) Are Civil War & Initiative different from each other?
4) At what point does Brand New Day sneak into this continuity? I haven't overtly noticed it yet.
5) Is it possible that the murdered Captain America was also a Skrull? Or is that addressed somewhere in front of me, yet? Or has that idea been discussed to death elsewhere already?
For the record, Issue #21 is where I think this (already questionable) title truly jumped the shark. Particularly because, as I've mentioned elsewhere, the artistic direction took an very different turn, which no longer masked the weaknesses in plotting & scripting.

Underinformed? Not such a bad thing in reference to New Avengers. Won't be much help 'cause I stopped reading it around issue #24. I never thought developing a bad memory was a good thing until now, I've forgotten most of what happened.
1) I have no idea.
2) Sounds about right, but the Initiative wasn't an event. It was an idea that developed out of Civil War where the governmet had to do something with all the super powers that did register. They created a "Super Team" for each and every state in the union and started a training program for these teams.
3) See above.
4) To be honest I don't think it's affected a d**n thing outside of the Spider-Man titles... er title?
5) I'm pretty sure the creative team behind Captain America swore up and down that it was the real Steve Rogers, not a Skrull, clone or other trickery. The body was viewed and autopsied without the body turning green and wrinkly, though I think it did eventually turn wrinkly ( because the super soldier serum broke down or something ). But, as we all know, Mockingbird also didn't revert to Skrull form when she was "killed" way back when, so who the hell knows.

I am under-informed on most things Marvel theese days but I did buy the Civil War dvd-rom and it was not as bad as I expected it to be. It just seems that you would have had to buy 352,479 comics to get the whole story.

1) What was that latest, SHIELD-oriented "Secret War" that's referred to? it happened about two years ago, maybe? "Secret War" was a mini-series staring Nick Fury in which he recruited Captain America, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and Black Widow to head to Latveria and knock out the current government (as Doom was currently in Hell). Turns out Latveria were supplying tech-based super-villains with finances and technology. When the whole thing went awry, Fury wiped their memories of the event. A year later, when the memories surfaced, the tech-villians struck back. Fury used the ensueing battle to go underground, as he believed SHIELD was becoming corrupt. The order is a little messy, but basically runs like this: Avengers Disassembled Wolverine: Enemy of the State Secret War New Avengers (1-10) House of M Decimation Civil War/Annihilation/Planet Hulk (all three occur at relatively the same time) The Intiative/World War Hulk (again, both occur at relatively the same time) Secret Invasion: Infiltration Secret Invasion Dark Reign Yes. "Civil War" itself covers the core storyline of MU as the Super-Human Registration Act is passed. The act splits the Marvel Universe proper down the middle, with pro-SHRA forces being led by Iron Man and anti-SHRA being led by Cap. "The Intiative" deals with the aftermath of "Civil War" and basically deals with the new 50-State Intiative, which is a government program to put one super-hero team in each state in the US. "Brand New Day" takes place mainly post-Intiative, running alongside Secret Invasion and the like. Cap was killed before the Secret Invasion Skrulls were first exposed in the Marvel Universe. The Skrulls featured in Secret Invasion revert to their natrual state when killed. Cap was clearly still human. Further, it's been well-documented by both Brubaker and Quesada that Cap is not a Skrull. And neither is Bucky. The artistic team on NA has been inconsistent since the beginning. David Finch was the artist on the first arc, followed by Steve McNiven, then Finch again, then Frank Cho, and Mike Deado (sp). The Civil War arc of NA featured a different artists for each issue. Howard Chaykin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Chaykin) handled the art on the issue in question). For the record, I'm actually a big fan of the current Marvel Universe and find the overall storylines to be very compelling. Not all of them are perfect and there are some real stinkers in there. If you have any more question that you don't want filled with sarcasm and spite . . . I'm your man. Furthermore, I've developed three "read orders" for Civil War, World War Hulk, and Secret Invasion: Civil War vplexico.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=civilwar&action=display&thread=1466&page=3World War Hulk vplexico.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wwhulk&action=display&thread=1682Secret Invasion vplexico.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=secretinvasion&action=display&thread=1852

Also . . . even though the thought is that you need to buy all the tie-ins and mini-series and crossovers and the like . . . you don't. Seriously.
All you really need to read are:
Avengers Disassembled Avengers # 500-504, Avengers Finale
Secret War Secret War # 1-5
New Avengers New Avengers # 1-6
House of M House of M # 1-8
Civil War New Avengers: Illuminati one-shot, Civil War # 1-7, Captain America # 25, Civil War: The Confession one-shot
World War Hulk World War Hulk: Worldbreaker, World War Hulk # 1-5, World War Hulk: Aftersmash
Secret Invasion Secret Invasion # 1-8, New Avengers # 40-47, Mighty Avengers # 12-20
Reading the runs of New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Avengers: The Intiative, and Dark Avengers fill in the gaps - Dark Reign, Intiative, and Infiltration. Realistically, if you're shooting for just the core books - you're only spendng $12ish a month.
Other events, such as Planet Hulk, The Other, Back in Black, One More Day, Brand New Day, Enemy of the State, Decimation, Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire, Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, Divided We Stand, Manifest Destiny, Messiah War, etc etc. mostly occur in between and parallel to these main events.

Wow, Woodside--- thank you ten times over. I took the liberty of exalting you (just, y'know, don't tell my wife. . . ). This is a very clear and helpful chronology you've provided here-- possibly worth referring other lost folks to, when needed.
Thank you for the objective, rational editorial tone as well. I'm as guilty as many of letting my bruised tastes and expectations get the better of my opinions. . . but that is part of the fun, I'll confess.
Mucho appreciado- HB

I am admiring my own restraint right now. Hmm, I have apparently put us all in harm's way by creating the potential for a world-annihiliating flame-blast from ol' "Villain-Be-My-Nameth" bobc, here. Wow. This is a heavy burden to bear, and I apologize for the carnage I may have innocently unleashed. Bob, Bob--- think of the puppies, Bob. And the baby chipmunks. And the butterflies and the hummingbirds, Bob. You don't want to hurt them, do you, Bob? Oh, this is just awful. . . Contritely- HB

I'm working on being less of a nightmare. From now on I will be happier and fluffier. Can you hear the sparrows and songbirds singing ever-so-sweetly?
Have I mentioned I love Volstag?

Ooh. Maybe I've pushed too hard. This begins to border on the unnerving. . . or perhaps the unnatural. (Like when Guy Gardner sustained a head-injury in the late 80's JLA, and turned into "Sweet" Guy for a frighteningly long time. . .)
What's more dangerous- unfettered expression of self, or unnatural repression of self?
Decisions, decisions--

(Hmm, that has a familiar ring. . . ) This is so TOTALLY what happened to you! You are, like, suffering from a trauma-induced personality reversal thingy! Dude, you ARE Guy Gardner! You are TOTALLY Guy Gardner! (Or possibly Steve Dallas from the old Bloom County. . . ) Quick, draw something--! Are there, like, unexplainable, light-pastel images of Precious Moments figurines, and kittens w/ big eyes, and Ziggy going "I wuv you"-?? Man, I hope you got that guy's insurance info, 'cause he, like, totally wrecked your career. . . Maximum suckage. . . Bummer- HB
