For those of you who have been reading my Avengers-inspired novel series, SENTINELS, it's been almost 4 years since the last installment (volume 7, 2012's METALGOD). But the newest book is on the way. I've already finished the second draft and sent it in. The cover art is being colored now. Interior art is underway. Hoping to debut it at DragonCon on Labor Day weekend this year. The title is THE DARK CRUSADE. Work has started on the first draft of volume 9, as well. I'm glad you folks have been enjoying the White Rocket show. I've been fortunate enough to be a guest of a number of fine shows over the last few years, and I have tried to take what I learned from those and apply it to mine. Namely, focusing on one main topic, keeping the goofy kidding and laughter to a minimum, and having serious, knowledgeable guests. In Anniversary news, I posted the first of the articles from ASSEMBLED 3 on the web site today, along with the cover design by Anthony Schiavino. (Compare that cover to the covers of the first two books and you'll see what we were going for!)

Lost in the shuffle of kicking off the 20th Anniversary of the main AvengersAssemble.net web site is the fact that this year ALSO marks the TENTH ANNIVERSARY of this message board!
I created it and linked it to the AvengersAssemble.net site in fall of 2005, right after I got back from living briefly in Singapore and had no job, no family, and no responsibilities. Ha.
Barely a few weeks later, I got a job, moved to a different city and state, then got married and had kids, and also began my professional writing career (with the Sentinels series and with the Shattering space opera series, among other projects). Fortunately, a number of great Avengers fans jumped on this board very early on, and good old Shiryu quickly agreed to be co-moderator (and basically sole moderator for the last several years).
So the tenth anniversary of this board is barely about me at all. It's about all of YOU. You who love the Avengers so much, and have come here year after year to share that love with your fellow fans. I admire and appreciate all of you and thank you for a decade of great fandom.
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! JARVIS-HEADS ASSEMBLE!! Once an AvengersAssemble Message Boarder-- ALWAYS an AvengersAssemble Message Boarder!!

Avengers Assemble!! As this year (2015) is the 20th Anniversary of the AvengersAssemble.net site, I will be adding new content to the site all year long. I have just updated the main page with that information, or the beginnings of it at least. 1. David Wright, Kell Carpenter and I just recorded a podcast episode of the White Rocket show, discussing the origins of the AA.net site and related matters. Most of the episode, however, we talked about the Avengers themselves-- the characters, the villains, the stories and more. I've put a link to that show on the main page, along with a link to the episode where Jim Yelton and I discussed Marvel Phase Three movies. Earlier episodes may be of interest, also-- I did a couple on Guardians of the Galaxy including a roundtable review show. The entire series can be found on iTunes (search "White Rocket Podcast") or at whiterocket.podbean.com. 2. As many of you know, ASSEMBLED! 3 never came together as a book. Several of you donated terrific articles for it, but as we lost our book designer and then I moved and changed jobs, got married, had a family, began a professional writing and teaching career, etc-- I never was able to edit the book together. Over the last few years I have attempted numerous times to find a new editor and designer to put it all together, but nothing ever panned out. And eventually the material in those wonderful articles became dated, and more dated, and very very dated, and pretty much completely out of date. To the point that I could no longer in good conscience ask people to pay money for the book, IF it ever even came together. SO. I have decided to give the material away to Avengers fans for free! Beginning this month and for the rest of the year, or until it runs out, I plan to post, unedited, as I originally received them, all the original chapters that would have gone into ASSEMBLED! 3 on the AvengersAssemble.net site, for everyone to read and enjoy. That includes the chapter written by KURT BUSIEK himself, talking about his experiences writing Avengers. I will try to remember to post here on the Message Board when I put something new on the main site, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check in there from time to time and see what's what. Also, I'd appreciate it if you followed the link through to my Sentinels site, and took a look at the (now massive) Avengers-ish superhero universe I've created in the seven Sentinels novels (number 8 is on the way) and one anthology. You can also see some of Chris Kohler's awesome art for the series. So, there you go-- a 20th Anniversary celebration begins this month. Let me know what you think. --Van

For those who have been looking forward to the publication of ASSEMBLED! 3, please understand I've been trying to get that book completed for several years now. I haven't been able to find an editor to step in and bring the project to fruition. Several different people have stepped forward since 2009 and volunteered, but no one has carried it through to completion yet. The material we have for the book is now years out of date--something that only gets worse as more time goes by, and something that has pained me greatly. The more time that passes, the more work it will take to get the book into shape to publish, and thus the fewer people who want to get involved. I'm still hoping I will find someone willing and ABLE to do the job. I haven't given up. We shall see what happens. Maybe we can get it together in time for the 20th Anniversary.

Hi, all-- Big news about THREE (3!) new SENTINELS books that are now available! As of this summer, Swarm Press/Permuted Press's licensing/publishing rights to the SENTINELS series have expired, and those publishing rights are now held by White Rocket Books. The first thing White Rocket did upon regaining the rights was to publish SENTINELS: THE GRAND DESIGN Omnibus, a single massive paperback containing the first three volumes in the series: www.amazon.com/Sentinels-The-Grand-Design-Omnibus/dp/0984139257This book is over 600 pages long and contains "When Strikes the Warlord," "A Distant Star," and "Apocalypse Rising," plus all 15 of Chris Kohler's interior illustrations and a painted cover by Mitch Foust! The second thing White Rocket did was publish another, even bigger book, SENTINELS: THE RIVALS Omnibus, containing the second trilogy in its entirety: www.amazon.com/Sentinels-Omnibus-Van-Allen-Plexico/dp/0984139273This book is over 700 pages long and contains "The Shiva Advent," "Worldmind," and "Stellarax," plus 15 more illustrations by Chris Kohler and a new cover painting by Mitch Foust! The third thing White Rocket did was to publish the new volume, kicking off the third trilogy: SENTINELS: METALGOD: www.amazon.com/Sentinels-Metalgod-Van-Allen-Plexico/dp/0615733905Like the other individual volumes in the series, this one is also available for Kindle: www.amazon.com/Sentinels-Metalgod-ebook/dp/B00AP521WAAs always, you can learn about the series and the characters, see all the cover art and some interior art, and much more at the SENTINELS site: www.whiterocketbooks.com/sentinelsThanks, and hope you enjoy! --Van

Gosh, I always love it when you post your reactions to these books, Shiryu! Thanks so much for reading and for sharing your thoughts about them. Before I get to the replies: I was recently interviewed by the Book Cave podcast-- my interview takes up the entire episode, and I talk extensively about the Sentinels (as well as Assembled and other stuff). Here's the link: www.firstcomicsnews.com/?p=27390To play or download the audio, look for a button just above the big Sentinels picture. Now to some replies: Very happy to hear that it is readable. I have been concerned that with so much happening in it, it might be confusing. It's hard to be objective about something you've spent so much time with. That's great. Re the object Damon finds: That was a deliberate call-back to one of the very first chapters in the very first book! Go back and look at the start of "When Strikes the Warlord." You will see the rest of that scene from a different perspective, including the item. I have waited six long years to finally get to pay that little bit off! ;D There's also a chapter toward the end of the first book where the Field Marshall steals that item from Esro. It all joins back together. And yes, you are correct about what it actually is. I set it up a looong time ago! Re the title: I think it's true that either of those titles would have worked. Originally the title was something like "Galactic Conflagration," but I decided that was too long and too complicated. I liked the sound of "Stellarax," and I felt the one-word title fit in nicely to follow "Worldmind." In fact, if I had it to do over, I would have called the one before that "Vanguard" instead of "The Shiva Advent," I think. So it would have gone "Vanguard, Worldmind, Stellarax." The Blight just doesn't "sound" quite as cool, at least to me. Re the fire entity: Wait and see! The Sentinels were sort of busy with other (bigger) matters and sort of forgot about him/it. That may have been a mistake! Re the next trilogy: Yep, the next trilogy is called "Order Above All," and the first volume will be called "Metalgod." I've already started working on it and, the title aside, you can probably guess who the main villain in it will be, based on what you've seen in recent volumes. I have a few other projects that will be demanding my attention soon, so it probably will be next spring before it's out. They've been coming out in May or June the last few years. And Chris Kohler will do the covers of this trilogy! Re A3: In my recent interview on the Book Cave, I promised to wrap up A3 before the Avengers movie comes out. We shall see. A whole lot of it will have to be redone or expanded now...! I was very happy to be able to get digital editions of all six out for folks to enjoy. And at those (low!) prices, too. Note also that my most critically-acclaimed novel, LUCIAN: DARK GOD'S HOMECOMING, is also now available for Kindle. Thanks again for reading and commenting!

Hey, Shiryu! Thanks SO much for reading the books and for your great review! I think you are extremely fair with your critiques. So I won't say anything other than to point out a couple of quick items: * I think you are assuming a little bit too much about Anna. You may be reading into her that she is the Black Cat, and just stopping there in analyzing what she's about. But I gotta tell ya-- you're slightly off. There's more going on there. (In fact, the Black Cat never even occurred to me until you mentioned her here! Ha!) You ask a very legitimate question regarding why she doesn't just win the lottery-- and that is the KEY to understanding her powers. She is not automatically lucky in ways that benefit her. It's more complicated, and you'll find out exactly how so very soon! * I love your analysis of Wolf! He is my favorite new character, too, and you absolutely nailed him. Very exciting to read your views of him. It makes me feel like I succeeded with him! I'm writing the first volume of a space opera trilogy, HAWK, currently. When it is finished (hopefully this fall), I will turn my attention to writing STELLARAX, and to getting with Chris on the last five pieces of artwork. And yeah, the cover for that one is GREAT! It should be out maybe in the spring. Thanks again-- --Van

Great stuff, Scott! I can guess at least two of the final five-- Korvac and the Mansion Siege. And probably the Pym deal from the early 200s that I didn't care for. I would have ranked a few of these much higher than you did, but all in all you're hitting all the right notes and including everything that should be there.

Hey, Shiryu-- I checked just now, and WORLDMIND is available: www.amazon.co.uk/Sentinels-Worldmind-Van-Allen-Plexico/dp/0984139222 But I don't see SHIVA ADVENT...! Gaah! I have no idea why that should be. (I also don't see the first Assembled! book listed... maybe because there was such trouble with the printing in it..?) We have to figure out a way to get a copy of Shiva to you. Maybe if you order the new one, I could at least send you the PDF of Shiva...?

The new volume in the SENTINELS saga-- WORLDMIND-- is now on sale! This is the second installment in the current "The Rivals" arc, which began last year with THE SHIVA ADVENT. The planet-destroying Worldmind stands poised to annihilate the Earth, but our mightiest defenders are gone! Ultraa confronts an alien tribunal on the far side of the galaxy. Vanadium faces charges of treason against his own kind. And so Pulsar and her remaining few teammates have no choice. As zero hour approaches, they must launch a daring-- and terrifying-- raid into the very heart of the Worldmind. Thanks very much for getting the book, Starfoxxx, and for taking the time to review it. Love or hate a book, believe me when I say that the creators are just happy to have someone interested enough in it to go to this trouble. I appreciate it.
Please allow me to address a few of your points:
I think that's valid and I'll address it with A3 next year.
I think your points of this type really just represent a different vision of what the book was supposed to be about. You wanted/expected them all to directly involve the Avengers as a team, or the AVENGERS comic book series. But that was never the approach I took with putting the book together.
My view was that this book was about "The Big Three," both in the Avengers and on their own. My view was that the Big Three are still "Avengers" even when appearing solo in their own books or elsewhere. I felt readers would be just as interested (or almost as interested) in reading about the characters and their actions in those other books. *shrug*
I'm not saying your point is not valid, I'm simply saying it comes from a different expectation of what this book would be about, or how it would be structured.
Thanks for the kind words there. Glad you liked it overall. I had those issues open in front of me, so it was purely my oversight for not listing them all through it.
This is another case of what I intended as editor not coming across clearly to you the reader. This section was never intended to be about the "Avengers Disassembled" event. I was using that term for the section's title simply as a metaphor for the section's contents. Sorry for the confusion on that point.
It defintely was not "thrown together" and I'm sorry it came across that way.
Some readers enjoy those sections the most. *shrug*
In my view as editor, every article in the book, to one extent or another, was about the Avengers. It just depends on how you look at it. Not sure why the "Forever" article would be better suited for a later edition, though. I felt it should have been in the first volume, actually, but it was left out by an oversight.
It's called "not wanting to go to jail." We are not Marvel and we don't own the rights to reproduce those images. I sneak in what few images I have managed to include in these books with great nervousness and trepidation, hoping the Marvel lawyers won't come knocking.
Again, thanks for the review. I agree that the book could have been better-- so could the first one. I hope the third (and final) one next year can improve in some of the areas you mentioned.

George Perez will be joining me, Joe Crowe, Keith DeCandido, and George Kopec in rolling out ASSEMBLED! 2 to a mass audience (we hope!) at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA.
As part of the Comics and Popular Arts Conference at DragonCon, we have been invited to hold a "symposium" panel at 1 pm on Friday (Sept. 4) in which we will discuss the book (plus vols. 1 & 3) and the Avengers in general. Afterward will be a book signing (and sales) in the Comic Artists Alley.
Hope to see some of you there!

This has been a crazy summer for me, book-wise. First (in June) came the SHERLOCK HOLMES anthology from Airship 27 Productions, in which I have two stories (and Ian Watson has one longer one). This book has already become the best-selling book in the history of the publisher! Then came publication (again by Airship 27, in July) of my SF novel, LUCIAN: DARK GOD'S HOMECOMING. Then came ASSEM[img src="[/img] "]BLED! 2[/b], about which you folks should already be well aware! And now comes the fourth (and probably last for at least a few months)-- the fifth volume in the SENTINELS saga, which is my own Avengers-ish universe that I'm exploring in prose novel form, with interior illustrations by Chris Kohler. This volume sees the arrival of the murderous robot, Vanguard, dispatched by his master to discover just how Earth was able to defeat the mindless robot horde that struck during the events of Volume 3 ( Apocalypse Rising). It's not quite out yet, but should be within the next two weeks. In the meantime, here's a mini of the cover. To order any of my books from Amazon and get the lowest available price (with free shipping eligibility), simply go here: www.whiterocketbooks.com/plexico/index_amazon.htmHere's the cover: PS: the cover is just one part of a twelve-character poster that will be available soon, as well. The Jarvis Heads have been invited by the Institute for Comics Studies to present an academic paper at DragonCon, based on the findings and propositions put forth in ASSEMBLED! and ASSEMBLED! 2.
The exact day/time is not definite yet, but it's looking like we will have an hour to do a PowerPoint presentation about the books and what's inside them, to have discussion and take questions.
I will be there with my PowerPoint presentation, along with Joe Crowe (Asst. Editor/Copy Editor), Keith R. A. DeCandido (Star Trek author who wrote parts of both books), and George Kopec (wrote chapters for both books).
This is an amazing opportunity to get word of the books out to the academic as well as fan community. We will have copies of both books on hand to sign and sell, as well. If you are going to be at DragonCon (Labor Day weekend in Atlanta) or if you are thinking of coming-- don't miss this!!

Thanks for the review, Shiryu.
Glad there's so much positive to be said about it.
I'm disappointed to learn of the typos and other flaws. In particular, I've learned that the Thor chapter by Karen was a bit over-zealously edited down, back when we were desperately trying to shorten the book (before dividing it in half). I truly hate that and I'm working on a solution or two.
It seems that no matter how many times you read over a book (or think you have), and how many other sets of eyes look it over, you always end up with errors and typos and even big mistakes here and there. I'm rarely if ever satisfied with a book I've written or produced, and I've had doubts and worries about this one for some time, given the long lag in time between soliciting the chapters and finally being able to publish the book.
I only hope readers will enjoy it for what is there and not be too disappointed by its various weaknesses.
Joe Crowe was responsible for pointing out that we needed to update some of the material for the passage of time since 2007, and he added a great deal of the revised/updated chapter endings that brought the book more fully into 2009. For that and a lot of other things I owe him a big "Thank you."
We will be moving forward with ASSEMBLED! 3 very soon-- hopefully much, much sooner than with A2!
If others have thoughts on the book, I'd love to see/hear them here. I'm fully aware of some of its shortcomings and just now learning of others. But I do hope there's enough there to make it worth your money and your while. Thanks.

Just realized I never made an announcement here, a month or so back, when SENTINELS: ALTERNATE VISIONS finally came out. This is the new Sentinels book that is actually an anthology of short stories, illustrations, and other material by a variety of writers and artists, all working in the Sentinels Universe. Writers include Ron Fortier, Ian Watson, David Wright, Bobby Nash, Wayne Skiver, Adrian Watts, and me. And check out the cover by Danny Wall! www.amazon.com/Sentinels-Alternate-Van-Allen-Plexico/dp/0578011204(Note: some of the material in this book was previously published in the Sentinels limited edition Widescreen hardcover and/or in A THOUSAND FACES quarterly magazine. Other parts are entirely new to this book.)

Bearing in mind that I thought A2 would be out roughly one year ago... Optimistic release dates: ASSEMBLED! 2 -- end of August 2009 (just in time for DragonCon) ASSEMBLED! 3 -- hoping for Christmas 2009. If we miss that, early spring 2010. The price could be as much as $24.95, or $22.95, or remain $19.95. I won't know for sure until the book is complete and I can get with the printers.
