Actually, Mad, which these days is published by DC (I think it’s technically not a DC property but owned by Time-Warner or some other part of the conglomerate—but I don’t know), does have a DVD-ROM collection from GIT ( Absolutely Mad). Quite possibly sales of the Mad DVD-ROM will influence the possibility of licensed DVD-ROMs of DC Universe comics.

Thinking about it, space would also be a serious problem for a DC DVD. Even ignoring all the side titles, Batman and Superman have been going on for so long that would probably not fit on a normal DVD, and the use of a Dual Layer one would make it quite more expensive...

even those that are providing scanned collections of Batman or Superman have to break them up into sub-series because of the sheer volume.

I think shiryu's comment on the sheer volume of Superman/Batman material was solved by Marvel on the soon-to-be-released Cap disc. It's only his Silver Age material. His Golden Age appearances (into the few in the 1950's) would probably be a separate issue. As Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman ran continuously even after Marvel pulled their heroes, I'm sure DC could do separate issues for 1930's-1960 and then 1960-present. With Batman and Superman appearing mainly in two titles each (and together in World's Finest), that's a lot of stories!!

It's a possibility after all, especially if they sell the two discs together in the same case. I'm a bit surprised that theu will do this with Cap though... surely there isn't that many golden age books of his to fill a dvd

If you look at all of Cap's golden age appearances, you'd go beyond Captain America Comics to All-Winners, Young Allies, and appearances along the way in other mags whose names escape me (and the never-ending "I'm too lazy to look it up right now" syndrome of which I am afflicted ).

Has anyone purchased the recently-released Incredible Hulk DVD-ROM, and if so, are there any changes from the set-up, content, etc. that we've discussed on previous compilation packages?

Okay, since I've now reached the year 2000 in the Avengers ROM its time to start thinking about another disc. For those of you who have purchased a few of these, what do you think would be good?
I have the FF and the Avengers discs. The Hulk disc feels like it would probably be pretty repetitive, same with the Ghost Rider disc. Maybe the X-Men or Spider-Man, but I'm a little worried about how those two would be after Marvel went crazy with mutants and introduced about five ongoing Spider-Man series. What about the Captain America disc? I don't know very much about the Captain America ongoing. Is it worth a look?

I actually got Cap as a scanned collection and I really enjoed reading it. I think if you enjoyed your other selections you'd enjoy Cap as well.

I own Avengers, FF, and Amazing Spider-Man. As I'm primarily interested in the Silver and Bronze Age material, it doesn't really bother me that the 1990s were so crossover-influenced. Yes, that does mean that a great story like "Kraven's Last Hunt" will be incomplete on the disc, but for what you do get I still think it's cost-effective. I was unsure of whether or not I'd buy the Hulk collection, as I've never been a big Hulk fan. However, after browsing through some Hulk websites I think I will go ahead and get this.
Strangely, I haven't purchased the X-Men disc yet. I was a big X-fan back until the Jim Lee series got everything involved and compicated. I guess I haven't recovered from my disdain for the book and it's overexposue (at least in my mind).

According to one of my local comic haunts, the Captain America DVD-ROM (Tales of Suspense-probably Dec. '06) ships this Wednesday!

It's over!
I just completed the Avengers ROM. I have to say that I found the end of Volume Three to be much more annoying than either New Avengers or Disassembled. Disassembled was awful, but at the same time it didn't exactly go out of its way to make a lot of sense. I actually liked the first year of New Avengers in a "could be worse" sort of way. I'm not interested in buying it but I'm certainly glad to have read it. There are MUCH worse runs. At least when things make no sense there's an explosion to cover it up.
The most angering moment in Avengers history is in the Captain Britain arc when we suddenly have to deal with Wife Beatin' Hank Pym: Twenty Years Later. After Hank's character had moved on and he was finally back to being both competent and size-changing.
And we still have it today. All the resolution is gone. Disassembled had Pym the wife beater, so does Avengers: Initiative.
Anyway, that's the Fantastic Four and the Avengers down. Both great discs with lots of great moments.

I am on issue #72 right now. I've read just about everything previously, but am trying to pick away at a complete read. The "problem" is, I took the time to read FF #80-170 in the middle. I have the Spidey disk, and have so far restrained myself from picking up my reading where I left off in the Essentials -- right before the death of Capt. Stacy.

I got the Spider-Man disc. Its always a party when Spidey's around!
Also, I'm really looking forward to 500 issues of JJJ. The man is a one man show.

Its very easy to see why Spider-Man became so famous. His silver age stuff is great. Between Aunt May's constant near death situations and Peter Parker occasionally sounding like a 60 year old Stan Lee the stories are like crack.

It's over!Disassembled was awful, but at the same time it didn't exactly go out of its way to make a lot of sense. And with this statement, we've finally found the middle ground. Thanks, engage. I'm just a few issues ahead of dlw. I've been reading Byrne's FF pretty heavily, but now that I've finished that, I can get back to the Avengers. The next one I'm going to read is the one where Valkyrie comes in. I'm looking forward to it.

I saw in the store a combined Silver Surfer/Fantastic Four ROM. This could be how great comics with shorter runs could be released in the future. Its a great sign because the disc is about 200 comics longer than any of the others so far. Maybe this opens the doors to combinations like "Dr. Strange/The Defenders".

Surprisingly enough, I finally found the time to properly read the issues through the DVD. I'm around #50 now, so can post some early comments.
I didn't really like the Lee's era that much. The art was ok, but characters kept developing whatever power was needed (Thor's hammer, Wanda) and there was way too much Teen's Brigade around. Things improved a bit later on, but it's only when Hawkeye stops complaining about Cap and the teamwork improves that things start to become interesting.
Aside for the above, the kooky quartet period was quite good, especially after the first 15 issues or so. I particularly appreciated having Quicksilver in a good light, proud to be an Avenger etc, whereas Wanda's crush on Cap, and Clint's crush on her seemed forced. Also, everyone was really really wordy!
Wasp and Hank's return was nice too. I didn't get why, after revealing their secret IDs to the other Avengers, they apparently went public off panel (Wasp especially) but nevertheless it was nice. Hercules was interesting too, despite some ups and downs, while a dark haired Black Widow, later wearing a flowery hat and a huge skirt, was quite a shock. Now I'm curious to see the first Jarvis, Ultron and the Vision!

Shiryu- - this is one of my favorite Avengers periods! Things improved a bit later on, but it's only when Hawkeye stops complaining about Cap and the teamwork improves that things start to become interesting. Yes, Hawkeye's growth from jealous hothead (fights with Cap, and later Hank) to respected team player was one of the focal points of the book back then. As I may have mentioned elsewhere, Natasha and Hank's presences allowed Clint to develop as a character and he became the "heart" of the team back then (similar to Ben in the FF). I liked these soap opera elements, which were, to my disappointment, never really developed...for various reasons(Natasha showing up, Sharon Carter in Cap's book, etc.). So true...but I loved it. I'm really trying, but I can't get used to today's sparser dialogue (though I know it's more realistic...). Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but I am a sucker for that old stuff: thought balloons, expository captions and dialogue, corny footnotes! In #46, right- -and in that issue Wanda shows up in a silly "modern" outfit too, complete with a pillbox hat (I think that's what it's called). I love Johnny B's work, but you have to wonder about his sense of what women wore in 1967... I know you're referring to the impending Masters of Evil arc (in which Jarvis plays a prominent role, for the first time), but Jarvis' first appearance was probably in #16 (though he's unnamed as the butler Hawkeye toys with, it's him) and he also appears in #48. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think about the next run of issues--this was when Roy, John and George Klein (who did most of the inking until #63) really churned out some classics!

Exactly. It's interesting to see the way it develops. Initially he talks and things aggressively, then he keeps talking in the same way but starts thinking that he wouldn't really want to fight Cap. Finally, he is open about it and admires Cap publicly too. I think that today's dialogues are extreme in one way, whereas the very early ones were extreme in the other. I prefer the ones from Shooter, Stern or Busiek, who seem to be more nicely balanced IMO. PS, and yep, Jarvis was there in issue #48 for a panel or two

I am finding it interesting reading this discourse between a younger reader coming to these stories en masse for the first time, and a "seasoned veteran" giving the long-stander's POV. Carry on!
