Any news on when this is getting released? I heard a collection for the Avengers is coming like the Spider-man collection, collecting the first 500 issues or something.

Just guessing here, but it would probably not be until December 2006 at the earliest.
- Spider-Man 11 CD set was released December 2003 - Fantastic Four DVD was released December 2004 - X-Men DVD released December 2005
Again, just guessing.

I haven't seen any of these, but I would love to see Avengers on DVD. And Adrian, can I assume that is Spider-Man 2 and not 11... I am woefully behind otherwise...

I think what Adrian means is that there are 11 cd-roms in the spider-man set, rather than it being #11

Curt, You do realise we were talking about comic books on CD/DVD and not the films, don't you? - Adrian

Rats! I thought this thread was an announcement that Rom: Spaceknight was going to join the New Avengers.

Ha! Well, if he did, they couldn't call him ROM anymore. Marvel lost the rights to that.
I still think it was funny that Marvel published a "SPACEKNIGHTS" mini series a couple of years ago, and they could never mention ROM by name or show him in the armor at all in it. Funny.

Of you who might own one of these collections, do you reference it much, and if so, what for? I can't imagine anyone really reading from this format, or using the ink necessary to print an entire book. I have looked at these at the Chicago Comicon before, and they are enticing -- does someone who doesn't care for the B&W Essentials buy the ROM collection? Just curious.

Well, I don't mind reading from pc if the resolution is high enough, so I think it's a good deal. I wouldn't get rid of my comics though, just in case (it's much easier to damage or lose a DVD than 500 comics).

And I don´t think a CD/DVD can ever give you the feeling a real comic does.
But if someone will not spend the time or money or just for check up or crosschecking reasons (when reviewing Avengers issues maybe), it will certainly serve it´s purpose.

Do these collections only run the issues from the main title run? what about subsequent volumes (e.g. Avengers: heroes reborn, etc) What about mini-series tie ins? Does the X-men DVD only have the Uncanny X-men or the other X-men title as well?

I could be wrong, but, from the website, it looks like the dvd has all the Avengers issues (V1, 2 and 3), but nothing else. It also looks like there is no West Coast Avengers in there, or did I miss it ?

The DVD just contains the The Avengers Vol. 1 - Vol.3, as well as all Annuals and New Avengers through December 2005. No West Coast Avengers or Force Works. The website advertises 19,000 pages are on the disc. That's a lot of reading! My birthday is coming up and I know what to suggest to my wife as a present. Brian - A4E

I am seriously considering buying these sets and liquidating some of the books that really have no sentimentality to me... For example, I can take Avengers from #200 up until the Buscema/Palmer run, then again after it (man, that whole Crossing/Proctor thing was just confusing to me...) until vol. III. Hmmm -- what to do with the first 17 issues of New Avengers...?

I would suggest donating them to a children's hospital but, the poor kids feel bad enough already. Might I suggest - My Top 5 Things To Do With New Avenger Comics List: 5. Let kids use them for paper mache projects 4. Shred them and use them as confetti at parties 3. Put in a recycling bin to help save the enviroment(and your sanity) 2. Use as Fireplace kindling 1. Line your birdcage, though that might count as animal cruelty Any more suggetions? A4E

What about simply selling them, if you don´t like them? ;D There are people who like NA, so you would get some decent money for them (at least here in Germany). Otherwise you can always dump them...

May be they are too recent to seel in the States, but on ebay you might find someone interested in it. Otherwise you can get a lot of paper airplanes out of them

Oh, I would sell them. It was more of a rhetorical question. My point was, I am not fond of Avengers roughly 200-250 (mostly the Milgrom years), and really around "the bomber jacket era" to the end of vol. I. I probably won't sell, but I do think I'd like to have these ROM versions of the titles out so far (Spidey, FF, X-Men, and soon Avengers).

I think it's probably a good idea not to sell them, just put them in a box somewhere. Who knows, one day such a big collection could have a value, or you may regret the selling. However I too would like a ROM version of some volumes, so anytime I want to check something I don;t have to dig out old issues.

I know DVD comic collections are not for everybody but, with work I seem to be in front of my PC more than free to read hardcopies, so the DVDs work fine for me. The price is right as well. As a collector though, it might seem a bit lacking. Though I gave up hardcore collecting many years back, nothing beats the feel and smell of a fresh new comic. Back issues, especially really old comics have an aroma all it's own. My wife use to swear that I was sniffing comic book ink to get high. ;D

I know the smell! My comics room is in our basement (with dehumidifier very close by!!) and you really can't beat that slightly musty smell of a comic that's 30-40 years old.
Do these computer collections have both covers and all of the ads, letter pages, bullpen bulletins, etc? I believe I recall that they do -- complete scans of each comic.

Yes, the DVD collections contain the entire issue including ads, letters,etc.. These DVD collections are about the only way outside of owning the actual issues to have an actual replica of the book. Essentials, Masterworks, etc, only contain the stories but, the DVDs are real time capsules. It's cool reading through the old issues and saying "Hey I remember that". It really brings back the memories.
Enjoy!

I confess I´m a "smeller", too. ;D Which is something only a comic geek can understand. And I don´t think (because of the paper and printing quality) the current comics will ever be able to give that kind of "experience".

Add one to the list, I like to smell old comics too ;D It's not that strange after all, of the five senses, smell is the one most linked with memory.

Yeah, the new books just smell like ink. The paper isn't newsprint anymore anyway. Makes you wonder if they could drop the price if they went back to cheaper paper. And another thing, how expensive must it be to make the page borders black instead of white?

Makes you wonder if they could drop the price if they went back to cheaper paper. That´s an interesting question. We had that one in Germany (which means Panini Germany) quite a few times. Initialy we were told it doesn´t make any longer sense not printing on high glossing paper, because matt (is this the right term?) paper isn´t any longer cheaper. But then they did find again a provider for matt paper, which reduces their overall costs. I think these comics are about 10% to 20% cheaper inasmuch the glossy ones. This is not that much, but I can tell you I love the printing on the matt paper. To understand, it´s not like the "old" paper, actually it´s a very high quality matt paper, only not a glossy one. You could compare it with the paper Marvel used in the late 90s, but this paper is even better. So, in Germany NA is printed on this matt paper, which is simply great and far better than the US comic (I´m buying/reading both). Whereas The Ultimates are printed on glossy paper and it´s a pitty they will stay with glossy paper on that comic.

I think in the mid-80's the companies started to experiment with something called Baxter paper, which was a little heavier than what is used now. They found that "special" books printed on that paper (with a higher price tag) sold well, so they moved to get some monthlies going on the same paper. The New Teen Titans from DC was one of the first books I can remember that went "glossy".
