I've been thinking about it, and I now believe that Pym died back in Avengers Initiative #2, when he essentially sacrificed himself to take down that Hydra ship. Earlier in the issue, he is taking antidepressants and when he grows to super-giant size to force the ship down, he comments about how "this is how I'll be remembered". Pym (or a skrull) shows up later and claims that he shrunk to sub-atomic size to avoid dying in the crash. But I'm not buying it.

I didn't think Pym could shrink that small anyway... Could he?

I didn't think Pym could shrink that small anyway... Could he? It seems like that's what he did way back in FF #16, when he and the FF visited Doom's Micro-World (which was later referred to as being part of Sub-Atomica, I believe). In fact, eagle-eyed followers of this durable, highly enjoyable thread may recall my months-ago reference to this concept (back when we were comparing the relative merits of Atom and Ant-Man): Didn't Hank travel to Sub-Atomica back in FF #16?

I think it was also stated somewhere that he doesn't become smaller than an ant because it would be useless, not because he can't. However, not all writers always remember this. For example, in the hylarious Superman/Silver Surfer crossover, the Impossible Man says "best Pym could do was an ant" referring to Atom's powers.

My choice is as Giant-Man. Yellowjacket was what I was first exposed to, but it's when he's able to become a giant is when the guy's at his best. I never got into Goliath, probably because I thought that whole "He can only stay so tall for 15 minutes at a time" rule was strange, and it also led to that short period where he was stuck at ten feet.

Truly one of the all-time great Avengers covers!!! And my favorite Wonder Man suit, too! I agree! Especially the part about the Wonder Man suit. In fact, I mentioned this suit in the "Favorite and Least Favorite Looks for Avengers" thread. What a coincidence!

This is tough for me. All of his identities has merit. The Giant-Man/Goliath are the most practical for a superhero, Yellowjacket is the identity he's had the longest (and his coolest costume) and the scientist adventurer fits because I think that Hank has always been a scientist first and a superhero second. However, since the question is "who is the definitive Hank Pym" I think I have to go with Ant-Man. This is Hank at his core to me. In this identity, I think he's still a scientist, and has to use his wits more to succeed than as a giant. Also, the aforementioned cover of #161 is what comes to mind first for me when I think of Hank (maybe because it was my first ever Avengers comic!). Plus, like someone pointed out, most of the bad stuff has happened in his Yellowjacket identity. When I think of Ant-Man, I think of stability (or what passes for it with Hank) and I do think of a scientist, a guy shrinking and communicating with ants.

I liked Yellowjacket the best, probably, but also liked him as Giant Man. When he was stuck at 12 feet as Goliath, I thought he was a little too low-powered and liked it better when he was in almost the same league as Thor and Iron Man.
I've gotta disagree with Giant man being the "most practical" mainly because he was a huge target, frankly.
Did you all like Hawkeye as Goliath?

You're a glass half empty kind of guy, aren't you? Even though Ant-Man is my fave, I think clearly you'd want the strength of a 12 plus foot tall guy in about 90% of all battles. Clint as Hawkeye is my favorite version of him, but yes, I did like him as Goliath. For some reason, I think he is a better fit as a giant than Hank, actually. Maybe I have some stereotype that a giant shouldnt be a cerebral type? By the way, my favorite Goliath/Giant-Man costume was the blue one with the yellow stripes.
