Just watched EMH--much, much better! I wasn't totally blown away, mainly because I think there were so many characters that there wasn't time to focus on any of them. Hawkeye, to me, stole the show even though he only had a few lines. I love how they are writing him--he's really obnoxious and really funny. I wish we'd seen more of Doom.
Oh God. The Skrulls. Please GOD don't let this turn into a Bendis nightmare.
It just hit me why I didn't like Spiderman. Most of the characters who appeared bore no resemblance to those in the comics. Luke Cage, a Grade C level character for decades, is now, thanks to Thunderbolts, one of the most kick azz characters at Marvel. Why make him a kid? And Iron Fist, a kid too? Why? Why is he acting so corny? White Tiger was okay, but seemed like a pale Black Panther imitation (literally). Why was Thundra not huge and threatening?

I just watched the first episode of USM. I hate to be negative, but I am not over-whelmed. Why have they made Aunt May so young and (relatively) hip? I am not liking that at all. Every other character is young and hip so why the need to make Aunt May that way? Also--it seems like they are trying to make the show a comedy (sort of), but to me, the jokes aren't that funny. EMH made me laugh many times. The villains in EMH were pretty scary, but the villains in this first episode of USM (Thundra, Wizard, Klaw and Trapster) aren't even remotely threatening.
I'm still watching mainly because I'm working at the same time. I sure hope EMH is better than this. I'm not saying USM is terrible--it's just a disappointment to me after how good EMH was/is.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

Okay--I am working at my desk and have the TV on and just in the past hour or so I have seen the ad for Ultimate Spiderman four times but not a word about EMH. Now that I've seen the entire USM commercial, it appears he does have the classic costume some of the time, at other times he has on a shiny gold and red getup. He also has a jet pack and "new tech."

It is really frustrating that it is so hard to find out what time EMH is debuting tomorrow. If at all.
I just caught half an ad for Ultimate Spiderman, which apparently debuts tomorrow morning. The ad had SM in a new costume (red and blue but not the classic suit), and the guest stars shown were Iron Man and Iron Fist. That's all I saw.

Oooh Goody! New EMH! Rumor strongly has it that a certain brother and sister are gonna show up this season...
RE: The X-Men. My attention wandered from them after Kitty Pryde joined up. I thought she was a good character, and she seemed to be introduced at a good time. It was only when half the planet became mutants that I found it hard to care anymore. There were suddenly like 500 Phoenix floating around, Dark versions of every character--it just got to be too much to take in.
You know Marvel had/has so many great, but neglected and underused characters, that I didn't see the need to keep adding more.

I knew someone was controlling my mind!
One year I had a Halloween party and dressed up as Thor. I made these enormous wings for my helmet from angel wings I got from some craptastic arts and crafts store. Anyway as I paraded into the throng of people, one of my majestic helmet wings got caught in the frikkin' ceiling fan, and suddenly the helmet became a deadly projectile, taking my cheap-azz ghetto weave (blonde) with it! Some unfortunate lass was smited by it--but luckily she was close-to sloppy drunk and found the whole thing amusing.
I learned a valuable lesson that night: Ornate head-gear is highly impractical when there are ceiling fans around. Low doorways too.

Hee hee! Well, to cut Kirby some slack, artists back then weren't allowed to draw nipples on characters either, so we can call them Barbie Doll chests too, I suppose!
How did this thread go so horribly wrong? And why do I sense that I am largely responsible?

HB!! I am shocked! Are you saying Jack Kirby's characters had a Barbie Doll crotch?!

Hee hee! Yeah in the early/mid 60's most super types felt they had to emblazon their initials on their costumes for some reason! Maybe they thought people were too stupid to know who they were if they didn't give a frikkin' giant clue!
I think Galactus' rather ahhhhhh ornate head dress was straight outta Jack Kirby world! Kirby LOVED those huge protrusions from the head! Look at the mid 60's Thor comics! Both Odin and Hela were infamous for their...horny head pieces! But that's how rumors get started!

Man--the Black Widow's original costume has to be about the worst costume ever! Didn't she used to have big round ear-rings that had BW on them?

Sorry I started a new thread about the new clip--I didn't realize Shir had already posted the new trailer.
Anyway--am I the only one who is finding it almost surreal that the mainstream world is suddenly so interested in Marvel superheroes? I mean actual news outlets reviewing these clips and pointing out where certain scenes came from? I am amazed! 15 years ago, nobody cared! The X-Men are a household name now but in the 70's, 80's & 90's I'd mention them to friends and get blank stares!
This is really weird!

I haven't seen some of the movies but loved all the X-Men movies (yes, even the 3rd), liked most of the Batmans, sort of liked the first FF movie and liked both Iron Man movies. Loved Watchmen. Liked Thor. The only comic movie I hated was Daredevil. Ben Afleck had no business being in that role and what they did to Electra was criminal.

You're welcome!
And I agree with you that the quality of Marvel Comics didn't go downhill in the late 60's. I think it went up! Comics always have peaks and valleys (if you stick around long enough), but when I think of the Avengers drawn by John B and Tom P in the late 60's--let's just say it set up in me a life-long love affair with comics that still exists today. I know a lot of fans were mad that Kirby and Lee left Marvel, and felt the quality declined--but I think maybe those fans had an emotional investment in those guys, and that's fair. I just don't have that attachment.

Are you new, Pulp? If so, welcome aboard! I think everybody here is enjoying the vast majority of the movies Marvel/Disney is putting out.

I always thought Rutger Howard should have played Batman. Ever since I saw him in Blade Runner I thought so.

Hi Kid--seems like the last time we heard a huge outcry over casting was in the Batman movies (George Clooney and Keaten), but so far Disney/Marvel seems to be nailing it 99 times out of a hundred. If you put this with EMH, I'd say Disney is the best thing that happened to Marvel in years. Good job!

Of course I remember! I originally made a reference to that in my last post, but took it out, since I'm trying to be a kinder, gentler Bob. But yeah Robert went to the big house after he woke up after a bender in some strange family's house. Robert let himself in and promptly went to sleep in one of the kid's beds. It was very trashy but did perk up a dull news day. Anyway--now Spiderman's new trailer is out, featuring our beloved Lizard: www.toofab.com/2012/02/07/the-amazing-spider-man-trailer-the-lizard-andrew-garfield-emma-stone/

That clip makes me feel much better about this movie! You have to admit Robert Downey Jr is the perfect choice to play Tony Stark.

I'm not worried about the price--which would you recommend to start with.
I can just predict your answer: "Well Bob, if you 'dont care about the price' get both, ya big dummy, and read them in order."

Well you all were right about Children's Crusade so I'll give it a shot. That book has been around for a while so I'm assuming there's a TPB out, or several. Could you guys recommend one to start with?

What I found fascinating is the fact that I never knew one thing about the comic industry's financial problems, with the exception of Marvel almost going bankrupt in the early 90's, but I could trace certain things I saw as a kid through this article. Namely--I would bug my parents to go the pharmacies that carried comic rotating displays, so I could get the new Avengers books. These "spinner racks" were pretty much gone from the time I was in 6th grade, but now I know why.

I was going to say this writer was cleaning up Bendis' mess, but didn't want one of our members to have a nervous breakdown. I hope the Scarlet Witch can be rehabilitated but you are probably right. To me, the Avengers don't feel right without her around.
It just dawned on me for the first time, when I was in the comic store Saturday, how many Avengers comics are out these days. There are too many IMO. I never bought Young Avengers for that reason but I have heard it's good.

Sorry I never thought to check this area of the forum out. I love Avengers Academy! The very latest issue way pretty lame though--mostly because the art is so bad. But for me, the issue I read today was the only one that wasn't top notch.
You guys really should check out Thunderbolts. The writer has done a tremendous job writing Luke Cage, Swamp Thing and Satana.
