How about this for an Avenging tale that "has it all"? 1) Thomas/Buscema... nuff said! 2) intro. the Red Guardian, revealed in this book to be Natasha's husband! 3) it's noted that the Wasp has just turned 23 (!) and... 4) ...because of that birthday, she is old enough to receive her father's inheritance -- a "whopping" $3 million!! (wouldn't even buy a quinjet today ) 5) the Red Guardian is working for the People's Republic of China 6) the recent Soviet beatdown of Hungary is mentioned 7) Cap's back, returning the previous issue to battle Diablo Not a bad book -- worth a look if you have it or a reprint copy. Enjoy!

It's also the first time we see Quicksilver using his powers to "fly." Roy's inclusion of this expansion of powers seems extraneous in retrospect , because Pietro basically left full-time duty behind a few issues later (in #47, when he and Wanda were captured by Magneto). After #43, I don't think Pietro ever "flew" (back then) except in #46 (and on #45's cover). It's not a bad issue, as you say, probably better read in conjunction with the other issues in this arc ("Black Widow is a traitor", spanning from issues #38-#44). This series of issues established Hawkeye as the betrayed lover, Cap started taking time off (due to his exploits in Tales of Suspense which were now set in the 1960s instead of WWII), Hank stepped in to take charge in Cap's absence, and Hercules became a regular character in the book. John B really starts hitting his stride as the regular Avengers penciler in this, his third issue, especially in the Hercules vs. Hydra scenes (the mythological Hydra, not the SHIELD foe, as Stan cheekily points out!) Also, the multi-part story (#38-#44) represented a kind of high point for the Avengers, capped by the first Avengers Day in #45 and the easy camaraderie in #46. Roy then dismantled (disassembled, one might say) the then-Avengers team: in rapid succession, 'Tasha retired, Cap left, then Wanda and Pietro were gone, and Herc returned to Olympus (of course the team was built back up as T'Challa and Vision soon joined).

It was surprising when I "opened the cover" (more like left-clicked for the DVD-ROM ;D) and saw Pietro flying; I'd completely forgotten that! Very true, although future inkers (Big John is inked by George Bell in this issue -- not the former Blue Jays/Cubs/White Sox slugger, however...) allow more of John's pencils to shine through. ...and no one is written out-of-character!

It´s a nice classic issue, though (imho) not a great one. And it´s one I reviewed myself already, as you can see here (if you like) www.wmca.de/rezensionen/raecher/rezension_raecher_042.htmI apologize it´s all in German, so it possibly won´t be of much use for the most honored (I do mean this) Assemblers of this forum. Back to topic: I think the books most important aspect is the well done charakterization of the Guardian, though Thomas did write this during the Cold War, he did write the Guardian as some kind of hero, too--just from the other side. And: he´s still dead (I don´t count zombie revivals) which is a rarity nowadays...

I am finally getting my Avengers collection DVD. I always loved the classic Avengers and can't wait to revisit issues like this.
Oh the reason I can't go revisit it in my collection is this.
If you get separated from your spouse, better take the comics with you on the first trip out. Trust me.
