How do you like your Tony Stark, and when?
Since you all know me as a classicist (is that a word??), you know I voted for option #2.
My favorite Iron Man story from the period is actually a Not-Top 10 moment for Mr. Stark. It comes from the Celestial Madonna story, overlapping into the Serpent Crown Affair. First, while enjoying a Quiet Half Hour In Saigon, Iron Man crosses Thor and gets one-hammer-whacked back into his place. Later on (several issues) he is trying to put the moves on Moondragon and she shoots him down.
I am not an Iron Man hater -- but these two moments somewhat typified the period for him then. First, that Thor is in a class by himself on the team (and I certainly think Iron Man is in that next group with the Vision, Wonder Man, etc.). I think that scene also spoke to the conflict that sometimes still takes place (although we wouldn't know it from what we get for Avengers stories these days...) between and among the Founders. Second, the latter scene speaks to Tony's long reputation/tradition of being a playboy. I don't care for Moondragon, but she is a strong female character and did shoot down the master...
So, long live Tony Stark (the real one, not this guy who is showing up in Civil War)!

I vote for the classic armor. My favorite was when he depended heavily on manual reflexes to activate the eye slits or whatever. I don't like the Iron Man that leans too heavily on cross referencing databases or is too much of a software engineer.
I liked in Avengers 15 when he used his chest plate as a telephone dial -- wireless no less.
The definitive Iron Man is a man inside armor -- nothing automatic, no computer nothing -- mechanics and electronics -- but no internet access, virtual reality, or any of that other stuff.
Jet roller skates not the FBI database. Get my drift?

I've been reading the old Iron Man series lately. It's wierd seeing him run out of power in almost every single battle he's in. Combined with his bad heart he was near death every other issue. That would make a guy want to live life to the fullest when he was out of the armor.
I guess issue #50 was before Marvel started milestone issues. The big villain was Princess Python, eh heh heh.

Bored, I know just what you mean, and couldn't agree more. My favorite Shellhead moments were... * When he decked the Hulk and knocked him out cold. * When he told Cap to shove it, in Avengers 168 ("flag-face," I believe he called him...) * When he took down Hammer's super-villain army. * When he was dating Beth and later Rumiko.

I voted for the classic armor, but I have to say my favorite of those was the pointy top mask. Not sure it made sense, but I loved that look. The era of the Stealth/Space/Underwater armor was pretty fun too.
I totally agree that he was a much better character when it was a man operating the armor, not the current organic software/Extremis junk. I hope that he is soon "cured" of that affliction.

I don't mind the new take on his armor -- it's just part of the ongoing evolution of his technology, and for me fits with who he is (a great inventor).
I liked the pointy mask, too. And you couldn't beat the transistor-powered roller skates, as mentioned!!

I voted for the War Machine armour. When used best the War Machine armour is Iron Man's ultimate weapon. When he puts it on the threat that he's going to fight is a matter of life and death and warrants the most extreme use of force available to Iron Man.
When Tony Stark shows up wearing the black and white, you should run. Fast.

My favorite armor was the one he was wearing when Vol. 3 kicked in... I love the look of all those lights the armor had were colored, plus I think Sean Chen drew an awesome looking armor (not quite as much his take on Tony without the armor, though...). The one thing I didn't care for from that armor, I still must say, were the boots... I agree with those who think that male characters shouldn't wear boots above the knees... it looks kinda... decadent... Favorite moments...? When Bethany Cabe & him were in love (I will always think she was the perfect woman for him...); when Thor, under the mind control of Moondragon, attacked the Avengers with a bolt of lightning, thus charging his armor with enough juice to ALMOST beat the Thunder God; when, during the "Crash & Burn" storyarch he was shown as being able to outhink almost anyone...; "ARMOR WARS'...; more recently, I loved the way Claremont used him in "Contest of Champions II", using his brain to turn the tide against the Brood. How about an added choice to the thread...? Mustache or goatee...? Personally, I'll go with the mustache, not only because, in many ways, I'm a classicist as well, but also because I'm getting a little tired with all the guys wearing goatees out there these days... No offense to anyone in here who might be into that...

I agree on that, especially since Tony didn't have everyday moustache, but what we call the "Matador" ones. Armor wise, I think I'd go for on the updated gold and red ones. While the original is, well, classic, I think the ultrasophisticated computer he showed for example against the Brood in the aforementioned CoC2 was truly impressive.

One reason Iprefer the classic yellow/red over updated versions, is the simplicity of the design. The aerodynamic models have some pretty complicasted angles and details that make it difficult for me even to remember what the armor looks like. My theory of comic book hero design is simply this: every character ought to e easily renderable with crayons by a 10 year old kid. Any character that can pass that test has a good leg up on the competition.

I recently saw some panels from an older (70's?) comic and I could not help but think that Tony looked like a cross between Oates (of Hall and Oates) and Keith Hernandez.

I voted #2. My favorite run in IM was between issue 115 and 150 of the original series.
Ive been reading thFF "The End" series by Davis and I have to say one of the best aspect of the book is seeing Iron Man, Thor and the Vision being drawn the way I think they're supposed to look.

I like the new takes on the updated armor. I do wish they'd stop showing him in his metallic yellow longjohns.
One of my favorite strories was Him vs. Ghost in the machine. Can't tell you why, just like it.

It varies from day to day but I do love Steve McNiven's flat face Iron Man.

Hey Doom, do you know why his faceplate is flat now? I can give you a hint if you like. ;D
OK, no more wall jokes for a while. I'll try to limit it to twice a day.

It may well be that, pretty soon, the whole armor will be flat as a pancake, once Thor & Hulk are done with him...
