I'm actually very interested (in a sarcastic sort of way) in hearing how Bendis is going to justify having Ares on the team.

Yea it should be interesting, probably will be something like his justification for Wolverine on NA.

I' mreally interested because the last time I saw Ares he was a villian who attacked the Avengers. Of course, that was awhile ago so lots of things could have changed.

Anyone else think Iron Man's armor looks a little cumbersome? I thought it generally got more streamlined as Tony modified it. This looks as bulky as the original suits.

Maybe this is his special "God Fighting" suit he only wears when he's about to slug it out with a Greek or Roman god.

the armor looks awful and Ms marvel looks like she was drawn in after the fact. Cho isn't my first choice for a team book...

Is Ms Marvel team leader in this book?

Ms. Marvel is clearly standing in the foreground, not between the potential combatants. This lack of attention to perspective is reminiscent of the image posted in the Ultimates thread that hypes Ultimates 3. Can't they find artists today who can draw with attention to anatomy, perspective, foreshadowing, etc.? Is everyone working today a graduate of the Image school?

The funnier part is that throughout Ms Marvel's breasts are bigger than her head!

But Dl--she has HUGE BREASTS, and that is the important thing.
Ares' entire character schtick is that he is a God of War, in the bad sense of the term, and he brings chaos wherever he goes. Only idiot Bendis would bring him into the Avengers--in fact, I'm anything but surprised. I'm sure Red Skull will be on the roster next.

The funnier part is that throughout Ms Marvel's breasts are bigger than her head! It’s one of her powers. Well, two of her powers.

It doesn't look like he even needs to. The man's connected. The closest thing to a justification i ever heard out of him was the "think of it knowing what you now know about Wanda" debacle.

Probably has to use the "Bro" or the "Mansier", if Kramer's still doing them, George Costanza's probably still selling them.

You know, a few years ago when I was coaching high school track and field, we'd go to a place when we were at the state meet at Eastern Illinois University -- Mexican joint that advertised "burritos as big as your head". I think we're on to an entirely new form of marketing here...

I think we're on to an entirely new form of marketing here... Hmm…there’s a place in Bloomington, Indiana that also advertises “burritos as big as your head”; I wonder if they’re related? I think this place is called La Bamba. I fear that in New and Mighty Avengers we’re getting comics as big as Bendis’ swollen head. Too bad they’re not big-brained!

sad thing is, of course this is gonna sell. Joe Q will put out the hype machine at full blast (which is something he doesn't do for other titles like The Thing and anything else not written by one of his pet writers-it must've been a shock when Peter David actually made Madrox and X-Factor work despite little fanfare) so expect huge coverage in Wizard (check), top ten name artist (check), multiple covers (don't know this'll happen, but I am guessing), and virtually anything else he can bend over backwards to give Bendis. Sigh it must be nice to suckle at the teat of Marvel and get everything you need to push a book...

La Bamba is the name!!!!! Must be a college-town establishment.
Way to go rex! "Suckle at the teat" fits in nicely with the previous few posts!

Sigh it must be nice to suckle at the teat of Marvel and get everything you need to push a book... I can understand (not really from a professional stand point) that people become "Buds", but the plainly obvious way in which BENDIS gets benefited versus other talented writers, just because he's someone's bud, is... quite shambolic. You know, people could say that BENDIS sells. But he never sold anything on his own properties in the Indy\Image days on his own name. He just networked the living hell untill he shoved himself in the uncanny position where being friends with the EIC just gets him all the hype machine \ marketing working to his benefit. Sometimes it's embarassing when there's talented writers out there making some very nice comics and they literally get treated like trash by the company... no attention... no marketting... nothing.

In a CBR interview Quesada answers a question by saying that Maduriera and Turner basically pick the projects they want to do. My guess is this is true of Bendis as well, and it may suggest that Quesada has lost interest in the editing job. Certainly I like it when companies pay attention to talented creators, but there must be some measure of control exerted when everyone's playing in the same sandbox. I wonder if Marvel has adopted a policy of capitalizing on short term popularity and worrying about the long term detrimental effects later?

Alex Ross generally gets to do what he wants at DC. However, he does it in the Elseworlds context, not in a regular mag. Makes a difference to me...

The darn thing is, that even though the sample pages for this book feature a big battle, the layouts don't convey any kind of dramatic story telling. I hate when there's a panel of people shooting ray blasts off panel, and there's no indication of what they are shooting at. That kind of shot can work in film, when it lasts like 2 seconds, but that kind of shot kills action in comics. It kills the drama. It makes the fight generic. They could be fighting anything and the panel would work equally well. (or equally poorly).
