Which major Marvel bad guys -- non-traditional Avengers villains -- would you like to see turn up in an extended Avengers epic (with no set issue run in mind -- please, let's have literature for literature's sake and not for the neatly-packaged tpb!!)?
Magneto Mole Man Galactus Shi'ar Imperial Guard Doctor Doom
Others?

Reading all of the Annihilation mini series, I´m thinking of of the guy himself. It´s a bit sad, that, in a way, no Avengers are participating in Annihilation.

The Mandarin, he hasn't been seen for a while I think.

The Mandarin would be good -- he was well done way back in Avengers Annual #1 as the leader of a group that included Power Man, the Swordsman, the Enchantress and the Executioner, and Ultimo. He was not, however, used well in the storyline when the bad guys were all out for revenge (I can't remember the name -- I don't think it was part of the Under Siege storyline, but I could be wrong...).

The "Acts of Vengeance" storyline you mean ?

You got it! Man, I couldn't think of the name of that arc, and was just too lazy to walk downstairs to check it out. Thanks!

You know I'd like to turn an unexpected foe into a serious contender. Someone like Mentallo. Maybe he could do something intricate and well planned. Or Spymaster. A thinking villain who might use the Avengers to wipe out the competition. For all out battle though, I wouldn't mind seeing The Fury from Cap Britain taking on the original Super Adaptoid with the Avengers caught in the middle of these two unstoppable forces. And the Sphinx from Nova would be pretty cool if it brought Richard Rider into the fold as a member.

I'd like to see an Inhumans storyline. One where it isn't a series of misunderstandings, but one where the Inhumans have a legitimate problem and are coming.
I think that the Inhumans are put together well. The raw power of Black Bolt would be tough for any group to take on, but with the entire Royal Family it would take a big effort to stop them.

Speaking of Richard Rider, I am totally out of the Nova loop these days (yes, I know the character was in the Annihilation mini but I didn't buy any). Is the Nova in the MU today Mr. Rider? And if so, how old is he?

The Mandarin could be a formidable enemy if he would be allowed to cut loose all the power of his rings; I'm thinking of something close to what, to me, was the definitive take on the character, courtesy of John Byrne, back when he was writing Iron Man... He not only portrayed the Mandarin as a real threat but, also, as a classy, even majestic adversary.

Magneto Mole Man Galactus Shi'ar Imperial Guard Doctor Doom Others? I’m not sure I’d put Magneto or Doctor Doom on that list—each has a sufficiently lengthy history with the Avengers that I would consider them secondary long-running foes. But I wouldn’t mind either in an Avengers epic, particularly Doom. While the Avengers have also gone up against Galactus, I don’t think he’s really established as an Avengers villain (I think most or all of the encounters had the Avengers teaming up with the FF et al.), and so he does belong on the list. He could make an interesting player in a spacefaring epic as in days of old. As for an original suggestion: how about Dracula?

I recall an X-Men annual where they met up with ol' Vlad. How does everyone feel about Marvel's "monsters" crossing over with the MU? Certainly it has happened, in the pages of Marvel Team-Up, as well as the major role Frankenstein's Monster played in the Celestial Madonna storyline as part of the Legion of the Unliving. Personally, I always viewed the "monsters" as being outside the MU, but I guess I haven't hated these "crossovers".

How does everyone feel about Marvel's "monsters" crossing over with the MU? I obviously don’t mind. The fact that you have such disparate types of characters coexisting makes the Marvel Universe all the more interesting for me. Even some of the superhero staples we take for granted—like a Norse god in the Avengers—are genre crossovers. Of course, great care should be taken to preserve the integrity of each “element”—but so long as it works, why not?

I'm pretty sure dear ol' Vlad's currently dead (as opposed to un-dead)... but of course, this would be only one of the 1000 times or so to happen... only a temporary setback for our Vlad... It has never stopped him before!

Well, in answer to the Phantom's proposal, I would not mind an Avengers/Dracula epic. I would, however, like to avoid an "Avengers all become zombies or vampires" story -- I'm pretty much having my fill of that storyline in Ultimate FF right now.

I think there are two "What if Wolverine became lord of the vampires" featuring a lot of dead or vampirised characters.

Actually, Dracula has had at least a couple of clashes with the Avengers.
The story of Doctor Strange #60 was entitled “Assault on Avengers Mansion!” and featured the Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel. Jarvis also appeared. The Witch was not on the active roster at the time—so, I suppose Drac clashed with only one Avenger in this issue.
In Avengers Annual #16, Drac was part of the Grandmaster’s Legion of the Unliving, where he managed to battle a couple more Avengers.
Still, an epic would be nice.

Isn't that the story where he easily kills Dr. Druid ? I've heard about it as quite a good one. Has anyone read Apocalypse vs Dracula for that matter ?

Isn't that the story where he easily kills Dr. Druid ? I've heard about it as quite a good one. I’m not sure if it was easy, but yes, Drac kills Druid. It’s an encounter reminiscent of—and, in my opinion, worthy of—the test of wills between Dracula and Van Helsing in the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi. After disposing of Druid, Dracula sets his sights on Mockingbird. I love the dialogue: BWA HA HA HA HA!!!
