(I guess you could kinda consider this my "let's make peace thread")
I'm currently reading/re-reading the entire run of "Uncanny X-Men" and "X-Men" (along with key issues of "The New Mutants," "X-Factor," etc.)
A little while ago, I came across the X-Men/Avengers semi-crossover in which Magneto forces Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to re-join the Brotherhood. Man, what a great story!
Just the way that Magneto's relationship ties these two teams together is a great example of how awesomely layered the Marvel Universe came be.
I just wish they had decided that Pietro and Wanda were his children during that story arch. It would have fit it so well.
I felt like it also laid down a firm foundation for all the great Magneto/Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch stories to come.
Anyone else read this?

Are you talking about the story that crossed over with Avengers #53? The cover of the X-Men (can't remember the number...) had Cyke and Quicksilver fighting.

I liked the storyline, too, although Magneto´s characterization was mostly a typical 1960s one - a little bit one-dimensional, but all in all really not that bad.
Wasn´t this the issue, when Toad kicked Magneto´s ass? Prior to the X1 film I found the Toad character always pathetic (even though I think this was intentional), but in X1 he is very cool.

I read that storyline ages ago, at a friend's place, so I barely remember it, but I think I enjoyed it, especially for the characterization of the twins. I also agree it would have been a proper point for him (and them) discovering their releationship.

X-Men #45 is the other issue. Two great covers for that story!!
I have the Essential Avengers that covers that period and the X-Men story is not included. Does anyone know if the Avengers story is included in the X-Men volume?

The storyline where Magneto convinces Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to join him runs from issues 47-49.
Issue 47 has Dane Whitman (in his first appearance) using some kind of "magnetic telescope" to shoot beams into outer space. Magneto, who had been banished to some distant location by The Stranger, somehow is able to ride across the magnetic waves to return to Earth. So -- Dane Whitman's first significant contribution to the Marvel Universe is the rescue of Magneto from exile. Think of all the trouble that would have been saved that hadn't happened.
The storyline where QS and SW rejoin Magneto really is a good story. There is an excellent scene when Magneto goes to the UN to demand a nation for mutants. A good fight ensues.
If I remember, the Avengers team was pretty well depleted at that time. They had, I think, Hawkeye, Giant Man/Ant Man, Wasp, and Hercules.
Haven't read issue 53 yet, but I'm not sure that's a crossover -- but it is an excellent cover.
I also really enjoyed the Avengers fight against the Sentinels in issues around 102 or 103. And the cover to 110 has to be one of the best Avengers-X Men illustrations of all time.

By the time we get to issue #53, I believe the Panther has replaced Hercules. Thor and Iron Man are on the cover to #51 (maybe my favorite John Buscema cover of all time!!), but I'm pretty sure they're gone in the same issue. By #56, which features the Avengers witnessing the death of Bucky, the team is Hawkeye, Goliath, the Wasp (prominently featured in a "stupid female" stereotypical role), and Black Panter.

Hercules leaves the team at the end of issue 50, choosing to remain with the gods in Olympus. Black Panther joins in officially in #52.
And the cross over was ok, even if one doesn´t read the X-Men issue it´s possible to undersatnd what´s going on.

I have the Essential Avengers that covers that period and the X-Men story is not included. Does anyone know if the Avengers story is included in the X-Men volume? It seems, the X-Men Essentials do not cover the early X-Men issues, see for yourself: www.maelmill-insi.de/UHBMCC/XMENR3.HTM#S83

The Silver Age books are titled "Essential Classic X-Men", I believe.

You´re right, there seems to be one Essential Uncanny X-Men (Uncanny X-Men up to #24).
