OK, so when were Stan/Jack, Roy/Big John, Stan/Jazzy Johnny, etc. at the height of their powers? Of the Essentials volumes currently in release, if you were going to recommend one volume of each title, which would it be? And, are there volumes you would make additional comments on?
Avengers Vol. 3 -- Roy and Big John define the team without Cap. Fantastic art, some cool settings (in Latveria and Doom's not even home??) make this volume a fun read. Only criticism is that the B&W art looks like it was shot from color plates instead of origininal line art.
FF Vol. 4 -- simply Stan and Jack telling great cosmic tales. This volume includes FF Annual #6 with a race against time in the Negative Zone and the birth of Franklin. The two issues after that feature Crystal joining the team to replace Sue. Also included is a great Galactus/Surfer/Psycho-Man story!!!
Spidey Vol. 4 -- Stan/John Romita and John Buscema. Wow... Teen angst, introduction of some cool new characters (the Prowler), a couple of good Kingpin stories, references to civil rights and Vietnam -- great period stuff!!
In regards to Silver Surfer Vol. I (the only volume), I just really felt that Dan Adkins inks covered up too much of Big John's pencils. If you look at the first four issues of the book and compare them with the last 13-14, there isn't much of a comparison to make. John's art is just beautiful!! But it becomes heavy, even kind of muddy toward the end. Also, while I generally like the way Stan portrays the Surfer, when you read this volume in a short timeframe, the angst and self-doubt become overbearing. I was depressed after reading it, let alone how Norrin Radd felt!!!
