Greatest single battle for the team? Korvac, issue #177. They all got killed (except two). But they kept fighting on, to the bitter end, seeing their friends blown away all around them. It's not my favorite storyline or villain, but it was, IMO, the greatest battle ever for them.
Greatest single combat? Hawkeye vs Collector (#174) is a definite nominee!
Greatest single combat between Avengers: Wonder Man vs the Vision (both times)
Greatest single combat between Avengers, not in AVENGERS? Iron Man defeats the Hulk in the pages of IRON MAN. It takes him two issues (and one gargantuan punch) to do it, and then another whole issue to get out of his own armor, now that he's fried it! :-)

Okay,
I'll give the Korvac battle its due. I would have been more impressed had there been some lasting impression, but it was an all out fight and had some great moments. Myself, I liked the battle against Ultron in #162 better, simply for the lead up, and of course that first Nefaria fight in the 3-issue arc, #'s 165-167. That was an awesome slugfest!
Greatest Single Combat? Yeah, Hawkeye vs Collector is waaaay up there. And actually, at least in the pages of Avengers, which others are there to pick from? The Black Panther vs the Sons of the Serpent in #73. Thor vs Kang as mentioned in #144. Seems the single combats are few and far between.
Greatest Single Combat Between Avengers? Here again, seems these are few and far between. I recall the Iron Man vs Cap way back in Tales of Suspense... umm... or of course Vision vs WonderMan... and then there was King Size Annual #2- chock full of battles just like that... My favorite, though not necessarily the greatest was Avengers #4 where Cap said "Go ahead, try to beat me," and proceeded to avoid getting beat with ease.
Greatest Single Combat Between Avengers NOT in Avengers? Well, that aforementioned TOS issue, but I think Van has the winner here. That page with ShellHead dropping the Hulk after a massive fight and that resounding sound effect just made the whole thing unbeatable. Good call Van...

Outside the Avengers: Quicksilver vs. Johnny Storm, FF #158. All of the tension that had built up in the Crystal love triangle just comes spilling out in the Baxter Building!!

Pity, I don't know this TOS story Greatest battle between Avengers... perhaps Thos vs Iron Man in a recent crossover (don't know its original title, it's the story where Iron Man wears an armor made more powerful by some Asgardian material Thor had given him). I also liked the Annual in which Thor is possessed by the Power Prism, and the (very short) duel between Cap and Black Panther in Contest of Champions 2

It was the Tales of Suspense issue just before Cap became the second feature. 59... 60 something? I forget. It should be in the cap or Iron Man Essentials if you have access to those.

True, that was a great battle. I also enjoyed the Avengers vs the Fomor, during the Avalon 2 parts story (in between Shooter and Stern), in particular Thor vs Elathan and Hawkeye vs the faun

My favorite battle was when the Avengers took on Kang and his Macrobots--the one where Wanda brought down the meteorite.

I have to agree that the greatest was against Korvac in Avengers #177. They all knew it was to the death but battled on. Shooter's brilliance is revealed several times in this issue as:
When Yellowjacket is killed, Hawkeye and Martinex are standing over him. Hawkeye shouts "YJ's dead!" and if you look carefully you can see the Wasp winging over to his corpse.
When Thor and Hercules attack Korvac, he comments on their immortality. Note that it takes two blasts from one of Korvac's hand to put Hercules down, and to even the scales a double-handed blast stuns Thor.
Captain America beating beat an off-guard Korvac. "This is no god hitting you! No super-man! Just a man!" Even when getting the upper hand Korvac states he is tempted to believe that Captain America would find a way to stop him if given time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd -
The Nefaria trilogy. Shooter again. Has there ever been a battle like this since? The Assemblers' determination was amazing. Everyone did their part. Thor was awesome.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd -
The Second Thanos War. High stakes and very dark.

4th -
Ultron Unlimited

5th -
Bride of Ultron

Black Panther vs the Man Ape in Wakanda. That showed off T'Challa's catlike abilities to a tee--the powers which today Marvel is pretending never existed.

Otherwise, I agree on the great Thor/Kang and Vision/Wonder Man fights and now I´m even more eager reading the Korvac Saga.

The Nefaria battle in #164-166 is my favorite single battle. It's actually a series of battles.
Why have these never been reprinted in color anywhere?

I did just recently read these issues (for the first time and they are really fun stuff (at least Shooter did write very enjoying Avengers stories). The way Vision knocks out Nefaria is awesome, maybe not that believably but really an ending with a big bang.

I believe John Byrne was the artist? Perhaps Marvel should do a Marvel Visionaries book with any of Byrne's Avengers work. I see the second volume of Perez's FF work is ready to roll.

Byrne did pencil 164-166 and Pablo Marcos inked him. Some of his best stuff of his mid-period. He also had a nice run on the title later (181-191). Scott

That would make a nice tpb collection. Byrne's collected FF work is great, as are the many editions of his X-Men stuff.

Yes, Byrnes FF arc is really, really good. I have the first issues as german TPBs and bought last year the US-issues 250+. And because of the incredible high printing numbers in the 80s the books are even a price bargain.
