It has occurred to me that there must be two fellows named Brian Micheal Bendis. I have come to this conclusion based on the following data:
When I read the tpb's of Ultimate Spider-Man, I am in love with what this man does with and to characters I've known for 35 years. He has a fresh take on old ideas, updating them in a way that is not pushy nor autocratic. He has respect for who Peter Parker is, and plays him in a world that we know yet that is more realistic. Peter's dialogues with Mary Jane, Aunt May, and other characters are treasured literature -- they serve to add layers to the lives of these characters, moving the story-within-the-story along. They are the bridge between action sequences and between issues. The villains are delightfully over-the-top, and serve as a great vehicle for some awfully funny Spidey-banter.
However, his doppleganger who writes New Avengers is a poor imitation of the former. This Mr. Bendis writes muddy, tired dialogue with no individuality. Action is forbidden in this book, and when it comes it seems forced, almost obligatory. Pacing is nowhere to be found -- it's almost as if the editors are sitting around saying "Pacing?? We don't need no stinking pacing!!" Characters in this book whom I've known for 35 years don't always act like I think they should; some have seen changes in their personalities, others are merely cardboard cut-outs of people I used to be able to care about. Villains? Have there been any?
Wouldn't it be cool if Marvel could get the Ultimate Spider-Man guy to do New Avengers? He is really much more talented than the Bendis they presently have...
I've heard there's a Bendis-guy who used to write Daredevil, but I haven't read DD in years. What's that one like?
