Okay I bursted out laughing today at the ad in one of my comics. Part of this "Dark Reign" snoozer, is the upcoming Dark Wolverine storyline. Is it just me, or was this "dark" character crap stale twenty five years ago? I stopped reading the X-Men when they started having Dark Prof X, Dark Beast, etc--basically ripping off the whole Dark Phoenix storyline until you were ready to hurl yourself off the nearest skyscraper.
Are writers today even capable of coming up with new ideas? Since when was Wolverine light, anyway? And isn't it true that this Dark Wolverine is Wolverine's son or some ridiculous thing like that--even though we hardly needed a second Wolverine, considering the fact that the original was/is in every Marvel Comic as is.
This is all so tacky. I am starting to feel ashamed to be a Marvel fan

Wait - that wasn't me that typed that! It was DARK SPIDERWASP!

Are you even bothering to read it? Or are you just blindly making fun?

Are you even bothering to read it? Or are you just blindly making fun? No one's making fun of the story, just the concept. We've seen character after character go "Dark" ever since it worked for Phoenix. Even if this story is brilliantly written (Though I highly doubt it) the concept is tired. Add to that the fact that Wolverine has always been one of Marvel's darkest characters and you get something worthy of being made fun of. I for one have no intention on wasting my money on this any more than I have any intention of wasting my money on Dark Reign but will be happy to blindly make fun of as though I'm Dark Daredevil.

You listen to me, little Woodsie. What you describe as looking at something "blindly" is actually 35 years of reading tens of thousands of Marvel comics. I've watched the Wolverine character over-used, injected into every Marvel comic, and now we are getting ANOTHER Wolverine shoved down our throats? We needed TWO? Oh come on. It's not even Marvel Comics anymore, it's Wolverine Comics. I mean I love to eat snow crab legs but I don't want it every meal, day in day out.
What is occurring right now with Wolverine is crass commercilaism at its absolute lowest and if you think I'll spend one thin dime on a "Dark Son of Wolverine" you are out of your mind. As SW says, this whole Dark Mutant thing was STALE, played out, TIRED two decades ago. It is absolutely a perfect example of the creative inertia going on in Marvel Comics, the cheap exploitation of the Wolverine character. and just general suckage.

This may sound weird coming from me, since I think everyone pretty much knows by now how much I have disliked most everything Marvel has been doing recently (except Captain America. And Iron Fist was really good for awhile. And Thor is okay.), but I actually think Marvel has been coming up with some really interesting, bold ideas in recent years. I haven't liked any of the resulting stories, unfortunately, but they've had a lot of interesting stuff going on and I appreciate that they are willing to shake up the status quo. Sure, some of the ideas have kind of been clankers (One More Day is crap and the only thing that could have saved Secret Invasion would have been if those ads about Skrulls living on Earth and merging with normal society had turned out to be true) but at least they're really putting their necks out there. There's nothing that irks me more about mainstream comics than refusing to advance characters in the name of maintaining the status quo, so I'm all for crazy stuff like Civil War (which is why One More Day is such a crapfest; it's just returning Peter to the status quo of 25 years ago, before most of the target audience were even alive). I guess I have slightly more faith in the current Marvel group than you guys, because I actually think that Cap's return is the beginning of a planned arc for the entire Marvel Universe. I predict that his return will eventually lead to the overthrow of HAMMER, the defeat of Norman Osborn and a return to the more optimistic days when heroes were free to be heroes and they fought bad guys instead of each other. It might take a year or two for it to play out, but I think that's how it's going to go down.

Yeah you are right--it's not all bad. I really liked the new issue of the resurrection of Captain American--mainly because of the beautiful Fitch artwork. Black Panther has been very good lately. FF is awesome.
Dark Wolverine makes me huffy puffy and I shouldn't project that onto everything Marvel is doing.

It might take a year or two for it to play out, but I think that's how it's going to go down. See I think exactly the opposite. I think marvel is throwing too much cr@p on the wall and seeing if it sticks without lasting effect. since they can revise history at a whim I don't see how they're putting their necks out at all. Let's kill off the New Warriors (but then bring most of them back...). let's have a super hero registration act (and then ignore it for the most part). let's do a Skrull Invasion, (but tell it mostly in back story and then end it abruptly), let's reveal Spidey's secret i.d. (and then hide it again in a few months), let's end Pete and MJ's marriage (by making believe it never happened), let's kill Thor and Cap and then just bring them back in a 2-3 year period when fan support has swelled. Nobody cares about death and destruction anymore. nobody stays dead anymore. Bucky is back for chrissakes. that's it. might as bring back Uncle Ben and complete the circle. (and don't tell me there isn't a good story in bringing Uncle Ben back- he's Spiderman's reason for existence...). I'm sad that a big event where someone dies is just prelude for their return. The stories aren't personal. the best Marvel stuff excites and touches you not because it's event programming but because you root for someone or care about them. Being ready to blow up your universe doesn't impress me. DC is ready to do a Crisis every other Sunday, but it doesn't make their books any better to revise everything over and over again, because they still haven't been telling good personal stories. I actually preferred the days of continuity mainly because there were real ramifications to every act. you didn't kill or resurrect a character willy nilly. You didn't destroy cities or planets unless you meant it. Now big change is just an opening act, one that often gets retconned away anyway...

I don't think Marvel's been about heroes being heroes and fighting bad guys (instead of erach other or the government) for over 20 years.

One thing I do hate is all of the Wovlering clones (literal and figurative) running around out there. The original Wolverine is fine, but we do NOT nead Wolverine ripoffs! I agree that Wolverine is already pretty dark, so I don't get that angle.

I honestly can't follow hardly anything Marvel is doing these days. With all the character dark versions, switched personas, sons of characters, alternate dimensions, ret-conning, Skrulls masquerading as heroes, villains masquerading as heroes--I've really lost interest. Reminds me of the X-Men in the late 80's.
You know I bought 8 comics yesterday and there was only one battle in one comic, and that only lasted a page or two. Did some edict come down that there can be no more battles?

Hey, 95% of Marvel is TOTAL CRAP-OLA!!!!!
I pick up those Marvel Previews ad-books ....and just shake my head that SOMEONE is actually buying this crap.
There's still some worthwhile stuff, but it's few and far between......
So, I love to hear any suggestions/reviews from Assemblers to help pick through the trash....
and that's why I throw my two cents in, too.......

So, I love to hear any suggestions/reviews from Assemblers to help pick through the trash.... It's not Marvel, but I urge everyone to run -- don't walk, RUN! -- to the store and start buying Warlord. The legendary Mike Grell is back writing his most famous creation, plus he's doing the cover art as well. Sadly he's not doing interiors, but he's still one of the best cover artists of all time. Here are a couple covers from the new series of Warlord: WARLORD #1 WARLORD #2 WARLORD #3 The first issue is a little setup heavy and he's trying to introduce new readers to the main characters and concepts of the series during this first arc. But it's a fun read. In the third issue, one of the new characters is stumbling around the jungle and runs into an honest-to-god unicorn. There's a nice sequence where she approaches it, awed and amazed at its beauty -- and then this giant dinosaur comes out of nowhere and EATS the unicorn. C'mon! How can you not love it. Everyone, call your comics shops and put this on your pull list. Justice demands it.

I'll have to check that out, Free. One good thing about Marvel these days is the fact that the Inhumans are getting the high profile treatment. I always like them.

One good thing about Marvel these days is the fact that the Inhumans are getting the high profile treatment. I always like them. The Inhumans are cool, but I think they work much better as guest stars than in their own book. Every time I've read an Inhumans story where they were the main characters, it got real old real fast. Black Bolt is a great character, the others are interesting as a group and they all look great, but... not leading characters in my opinion.

Yeah I think you're right on that Scott, but being the imaginative guy I am, I look at the "race" of Inhumans as fertile ground for some stellar stories. If everyone is genetically altered, lots of crazy chit could happen! You know, rivals, underground groups, back-stabbing. That kinda thang. I also might delve into a plotline where perhaps the Inhuman's powers might evolve and grow into other powers. Let's face it, Triton needs some serious re-working. I also think having Black Bolt unable to communicate verbally at this point is a real plot stunter. I mean if the Inhumans have technology that allows them to fly to different galaxies, you can't tell me they couldn't come up with some sort of voice decoder thingee that would allow him to communicate.
I can see lots of plots. Nobody's really done much with them

Since when was Wolverine light, anyway Ha! Never thought of it that way. It made me think of a "Dark Punisher" spin-off. Or maybe they'd go the opposite route outright and have a Light Punisher with a white costume and black skull. He uses a taser and nerf nunchucks...

Are you sure the story stars the real Wolverine?
The other day I skimmed through the Dark Hawkeye and Dark Spider-Man minis currently out, and they star Bullseye and Venom, posing for Clint and Peter in Osborn's Dark Avengers. As such, I would assume that Dark Wolverine is not Logan but Osborn's Wolvie...

Let's face it, Wolverine is how old now? Plus he can be in twelve places at once. You gotta figure he could have an army of children out there. I'm waiting for the Wolverine family reunion and alternate reality jamboree Giant-Size one shot.

...but being the imaginative guy I am, I look at the "race" of Inhumans as fertile ground for some stellar stories. If everyone is genetically altered, lots of crazy chit could happen! You know, rivals, underground groups, back-stabbing. Which really makes me wonder how the Royal Family (of Inhumans) think they'll achieve peace and tranquillity by submitting everyone to the Terrigen Mists (via the T-Bomb) over in War of Kings. Once everyone is an Inhuman, then everyone will get along? The idea is absurd. I know what you mean by a Triton "re-working", Bob. IIRC when Triton first introduced he had some sort of "hard water" powers (which seem to have been a carbon copy of the powers of DC's Mera,Aquaman's wife)....but those powers seem to have vanished pretty quickly, though. But while the Inhumans were bred to be "weapons", the assumption is that not everyone will have powers in the conventional sense ("super-powers"). Some Inhumans--like Triton, or the aerial Inhumans, for example--are suited for observation, stealth, and infiltration. LOL! Bolt should dump Medusa and take up with a shapely telepath who could read his thoughts and project them to others ( I mean, there are so many telepathic mutants in the Marvel Universe, surely there must be some telepathic Inhumans, too). Or couldn't someone--if not an Inhuman scientist, than maybe Professor X or Pym---or Reed, McCoy, Banner, et al.,--adjust Bolt's tuning fork so it could transmit BB's thought waves or something?
