I am just reading a big stack of comics i bought at a $1 sale, and Avengers #189 was among them. I don't think #189 deserves a "Know Your Classics" treatment, per se, but there is a lot about "Fill-In" issues like this that I really love (and miss). Written as a group effort by Mark Gruenwald, Steven Grant, Roger Stern, and David Michelinie, this issue (set just after Avengers Annual #9) features a bunch of *asterisks* to explain the activities of Avengers such as Thor, Falcon, YJ and Wasp in other Marvel titles (I still love it when they do that), it gives the Marvel Universe a sense of continuity. This story is lighthearted and FUN! (remember fun?) The characterizations are right on, (except I don't like the way Falcon was written as an Avenger. He seemed unsure of himself and a second banana. I understand he was reluctant to join, but the Falcon had been in the biz long enough- he shouldn't have been overwhelmed). This line-up was one of my favorites, the Avengers seemed like a real family (the big 3, Vizh and Wanda, Beast and Wondy, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, jocasta, jarvis). Byrne's art is great, even Jim Novaks letters seemed the perfect fit for the Avengers, IMO. A great cover, a well-drawn fight between Hawkeye and Deathbird, a funny letters page, and a fantastic Shogun Warriors ad (!), anyone who likes lots of avengers hanging out at the Mansion should check this out.

I understand he was reluctant to join, but the Falcon had been in the biz long enough- he shouldn't have been overwhelmed. I agree, Sam's characterization during this time seems off. In the preceding issue (#188, written by Bill Mantlo), Sam is constantly questioning his place on the team, he thinks everyone's ignoring him, and when he's captured he thinks the Avengers won't bother to save him. IMO, writing him like this was a real disservice to the character.

I am reading though all of my Avengers, and I'm on #177 right now. I am now looking forward to #189! I do like the occasional light fill-in issue, and I do miss the fun that comics from the 70's and 80's had in them, not to mention the classic ads!
