Doesn't matter if you bought them or came to them later -- but first-hand news is better! I had a friend, back when we were 7 or 8, who had worn copies of Amazing Spider-Man #121-122. I read and said "whoa !!". The same kid had a copy of Giant-Size X-Men #1... another moment like the one previously mentioned. Lastly, as a college student I remember reading The Dark Knight Returns. To this day, that first issue is the only comic I have ever finished, flipped over, and immediately read again!

Plenty!
- I remember when I found Professor X was Onslaught. I gasped at the end!
- Plenty of Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" had me going "whoa!" Mostly, "New X-Men" # 126.
- Sandman, when Morpheus met with Death at the end. It was super-sad, but just amazing.
- "Kingdom Come" when everyone is nuked.
- "History of Violence" when they revealed what they did with his buddy.
- Magneto rips out Wolverine's Admantium in X-Men # 25
- Magneto ripping Apocalypse in two in "X-Men: Omega"
- Ultron Unlimited. "Ultron . . . we will have words with thee." (Thor)
- When James popped his claws in "Origin"
- And the biggest one was in "Earth X: Issue X" when Galactus ripped the Celestial embryo out of the Earth. That entire issue is one of the best I've ever read.

One that totally sticks out would be THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL the first marvel graphic novel. Actually shed a tear after that one. DARK KNIGHT RETURNS I'm with you on that one dlw66! THE WATCHMEN totally blew me away. I had to wait each month for the next issue. It was hell. A new book i started recently also falls into this category. It's called PHONOGRAM from Image. If you are familliar with Brit Pop music from the early 90's and are a music fan in general you should check this out. And it's in B & W. THE BOYS just makes me laugh. Good dark fun!

Yeah, the Death of Captain Marvel surprised me. I thought they'd save him somehow.
The final showdown between the Avengers and Korvac...
The Scarlet Witch takes down Ultron in #171...
Kang takes over the earth in Kurt's "Kang Dynasty" and nukes Washington DC...!
The big finale of the first major Micronauts storyline, in #11...
The end of the Thanos/Warlock/Avengers conflict in MTIO Annual #2...
The opening sequence of the issue of Daredevil with the death of Elektra, where Bullseye escapes from prison. That was amazing.
Half the stuff that happened in NEXUS. What an under rated comic...

Ah, I hate the threads like this which are tantamount to someone saying "Hey, you're funny. Say something funny!" and I feel like I stand there with vacant eyes and a screwy self-conscious smile.
But one thing that I was thinking of lately was toward end of Alan Davis' second run on Excalibur. He had the Phoenix Force and the Anti-Phoenix throwing planets at each other! After that, the Phoenix Force's conversation with Galactus was also mind-blowing deep. A very satisfying resolution to Rachel Summers and the Phoenix question. Too bad that didn't stick, eh? Guess I might have been the only one to go "whoa" over that one.

RSC --
Ditto on Kraven's Last Hunt. Read that in the monthlies. It is just as powerful as a tpb. Great Mike Zeck art and JM DeMatteis script.
Peter Parker #200 was very good, too. But then, a well-crafted Spidey/Goblin story usually gets it done for me.

Another vote for Kraven's Last Hunt. Gang War got me into comics, KLH made me stay. My first Avengers story - Avengers vs Olympus, got me into comics from the sheer melodrama of it all. Then getting the back issues. Remember the issue just before that when Jarvis is pondering his future? Now that is a great personal issue - Bendis take note!
Oh yeah - pretty much every Preacher issue. ("They can't do that in a comic!!!!")

"cages" by dave mckean, "daredevil: wake up" by david mack, "Powers: Forever" by Bendis and Oeming are three of the most amazing reads ever. also for amazing art and story, try any of the three "blacksad" books by guarnido.

I wouldn't know really... I've bought most of my favourite stories years after they came out, so I knew already the most important plot points. Besides this, it would probably be a tie between Gwen Stacy's death and KRaven's suicide.

another good one is the issue of WONDER WOMAN where she snaps Maxwell Lord's neck. The issue number escapes me but I do have it signed by Rags Morales
