With two issues/months to go in the "event" how in the heck can they wrap this up in a way this is not total nonsense (I am assuming they plan to end it in a way that is not total, because I am hoping they are not going to do something stupid).
The sides are still openly hostile, with no compromise in sight. I hope that it does not turn into a "Wanda shows up and bends reality and everyone is friends" or "Sentry uses his uberpowers to force everyone to play nice."
How do they get this somewhere that we can continue a somewhat normal comic world?
I suspect that somehow the use of the Thunderbolts and their captives will force the issue to the back burner. Everyone on the pro-reg sidewill start to realize how bad things are when they are on the same side as villians and on the opposite side of people like Cap, Spidey, and Invisible Woman. But even though I think this may be a piece of the puzzle, I would love to hear other peoples pet theories.

My best answer is that "Civil War" # 6 and 7 will mainly handle the two main opposing forces (being Iron Man's Pro-Reg forces and Cap's Secret Avengers), as well as resolve the main conflict.
The many, many more tie-ins will handle the ripples.
Issue 5 felt to me like a "decompression" issue, allowing some air into the series to give the characters some down time and to plan their next move.
Millar's really quite good at pulling off big endings, so my advice is just wait and see.
SPECULATION: As we move into the final battle, I'm betting we'll have a lot big surprises. It would not shock me if the X-Men popped up again or if the real Thor showed up. Or something just as crazy.
(The idea of Millar writing a real Thor vs. Clone-Thor battle makes me completely geek-out)

They may not *entirely* end it. They could leave the Act in place and run for a year or so with a hero hostile universe... leading into next year's Big Event.

Well, Millar is renowned for being like the ONLY writer whose third act is generally the best. (At least, according to most reviewers.) He loves shocks.
But I honestly don't know how this will all end. And that doesn't worry me at all- I think it's fantastic. I can't remember the last time I've been so stumped on how to end a story, I love it because it means no matter what happens I WILL be surprised.
I can see things up to the big battle. But how they'll resolve it without a major death, with one side flat out losing, is completely beyond me.
