I was thinking that the next comic series to receive the animation treatment would have to be the Avengers. Justice League, Batman, Superman, X-Men, Spider-Man and even the Legion of Super-Heroes (Superboy) have been adapted in recent years and have faired pretty well.
So what would your ideal Avengers series look like?
I’d like to see a core team of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hank Pym and Wasp, Vision and the Scarlet Witch. The Hulk would be removed from the equation to simplify things. The new Avengers origin would involve Loki manipulating Captain America (unthawed due to Global Warming) into attacking Thor by making him think World War Two isn’t over. The fight is large enough to draw the attention of Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Eventually Captain America realizes that Thor isn’t a Nazi superman (blonde hair, blue eyes and flying over the city) and they turn the tables on Loki. And thus the Avengers are born.
Hawkeye is introduced as a villain who attacks the Avengers at the mansion. After using a variety of trick arrows to disable the Avengers he steals information relating to the true identity of Iron Man. The Avengers eventually track him to a warehouse where he exchanges the information. The blackmailer (someone from the Avengers rouges gallery, or maybe one of the crime bosses from the Daredevil family) is attacked by the Avengers during the exchange. During the fight Hawkeye helps the Avengers, reveals that he was being blackmailed due to his actions as a criminal and joins the team.
The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are introduced as immigrants trying to start a new life in America. Due to their powers they petition for Avengers Membership, and receive it after helping the Avengers during an ambush. However, Quicksilver becomes disgusted with what he views as a bias against him due to his mutant heritage and leaves. Wanda elects to stay.
The season finale would be the introduction of Ultron. Ultron creates the Vision to help him kill Hank Pym and the Avengers, but the Vision turns on his “father” and helps the Avengers defeat him. He joins the team and the season ends with the “Androids can cry” moment.
The team would live at the Mansion and be tended to by Jarvis. I think that most of these elements could be taken from the Avengers in the 70s when the Mansion was more of a house than a base.
I think the membership could change in later seasons, but the core team would remain relatively stable. Different heroes in the Avengers family could be teamed with and could appear to fight major threats as reserve members.
I think the first season at least could be used to set up the Avenger’s rouge gallery, with undercurrents of the Ultron story running through the later parts of the season. I’d like to see Helmut Zemo and the Masters of Evil (Radioactive Man, Wonder Man, Whirlwind, etc), the normal version of Count Nefaria, Kang, and other classic villains introduced over the season.
What are your thoughts? What would you like to see if the Avengers were adapted for animation?
