What's your favorite Galactus story, and why?
I can honestly say I enjoy any FF story where the Big G is the bad guy!
My favorite, however (if I HAVE to pick one) is the story that ran through the early #70's and included both the Surfer and the Psycho-Man.
Second favorite is the story that ran through #171-175 with the High Evolutionary, the Destroyer, Torgo, and the Skrulls.

Galactus really is larger than life and the classic FF/Galactus stories are alltime faves of mine.
What I´m looking for: The end of Annihilation isn´t far and Giffen said, Galactus will get verrrry angry.... (for you who don´t read Annihilation: Thanos captured Galactus for Annihilus and they diverge the Cosmic Power when Galactus feeds. I think every true Marvel fan pitied for Galactus when they saw him captured).

First appearance, but I enjoyed the lighter take on him in Waid's FF "Rising Storm."
The story prior to that I was SHOCKED AS HELL when he turned up at the end. I mean, since that first appearance he's never been that menacing but this was a case of
"Hurrah! The world is...
wait...
what's that giant hand...
OH GOOD LORD!!!!!!"
His Annihiliation stuff is fantastic too.

My favourite is Fantastic Four 242-244. It concludes with one of the best moments in comics when Reed decides to save Galactus because its wrong to let him die without trying to help him. That's the ultimate characterization of Reed.
The creation of Nova is also great.

I think his first appearance, but I also liked him a lot when he fought against the High Evolutionary, and in the crossover with Darkseid

Both good choices. I liked when he battled the Sphinx as well!

HIs first appearance is of course a classic. I also enjoyed his battle with Ego the Living Planet in Thor - not sure of the issue numbers but I think it was around 160. Two colossal powers, both with colossal egos, duking it out. Lots of fun!

I love all the old Galactus stories... I think my favorites (in no particular order) are: * The Horror that Walks on Air (Gabriel). * The FF storyline where he battles the Sphinx (while the FF battles Terrax). * The battle between Galactus (on one side) and the Avengers, FF, and Doctor Strange on the other. It's the one that ends with Reed deciding to save him. (That's the Frankie Raye one, right?) And with Frankie Raye cast in the upcoming FF movie, I am sort of hoping that's the story they're going with-- or at least the ending. But I'll bet it's not. WIZARD has intimated we won't get very much of the Big G in the movie... And don't forget his drinking contest with Hercules!!

Was that in the first Hercules limited series? I vaguely remember that. I need to make more time for reading back issues. Maybe I should quit keeping up with current events.

Speaking of Galactus:
Every now and then, I think about basic questions to do with the Marvel Universe. Often these have led me to ideas for stories (for MV1 or whatever). But the following never lent itself to a story idea, and sat on my computer for several months. I just came across it and thought I might run it past you folks, to see what you think:
What is Galactus?
He is the living embodiment or expression of the Power Cosmic, given a sentient force and intellect.
What is the Power Cosmic?
It is the sum of all the power of all the stars in the heavens.
So what does Galactus do?
He devours planets that possess a biosphere, a life force.
But, what are planets?
“Planets” translates as “wanderers.” Planets are formed from the heavier elements when the stars condense in stellar nurseries. Planets are, essentially, the lost, wandering children of the stars. Planets with life have a tiny fraction of the Power Cosmic, since their biosphere/life force is powered and maintained by the energy coming from the stars they orbit.
Thus when Galactus devours planets, he is acting as the agent of the Power Cosmic itself, returning the lost children to their parents, reuniting tiny portions of the Power Cosmic with the greater whole.
Thoughts??

That's too deep for me, but then I'm a pretty shallow person. I think the big G is more like a stellar vampire feeding off the living to keep himself alive. He uses his powers to create minions to wach over him and find prey much like Dracula did to Renfield.

Van, were there any super-mushrooms in close proximity to you when you thought that up?
Actually, it's kind of a neat "circle of life" kind of story. Not sure it would change Reed Richards mind about saving Earth, Counter-Earth, etc., but it's a good theory.

Sure, I can see it that way -- but he's still destroying sentient minds anyway you look at it. And that is unacceptable, no matter how super groovy.

Nice thoughts, Van! Very cosmic. But are you saying that all planets are fragmented power cosmic, or just those that have a bioshpere? And if so then how do stars form? What happens when one goes nova or collapses into a black hole? And how does this compare to Eternity, who is the sum total of the universe's life forces already? Hmmm.... I've been meaning to try and kick ideas around about Galactus' role in my own fanfic universe, so at least you've prompted my mind to think!
