Marvel’s November solicitations include the first two issues of the 5-issue limited series Avengers Next, featuring the next-generation Avengers of A-Next, from the MC2 Universe set roughly 15 years in the future. That’s the same alternate universe Spider-Girl hails from, and she’s a member. Here’s the solicitation: A cover image is also available. I never read A-Next; it was published at a time when I seldom bought comics (for various reasons). I’ve seen a little bit of Spider-Girl and read all five issues of Fantastic Five (which I bought as cheap back issues), also set in the MC2 continuum. I’ve generally been suspicious of MC2 comics; in my mind, they appear to be too derivative of their inspirations—for instance, it seems as though all of Spider-Girl’s foes are revisitations of tried-and-true Spider-Man characters. I didn’t mind with F5; it was essentially Tom DeFalco and Paul Ryan’s continuation of their abruptly Onslaught-interrupted Fantastic Four run, which I had liked. But I’ve never had much interest in delving into A-Next back issues. But now there’s a new Next coming. Is it time to reconsider my opinion? Any A-Next readers care to chime in?

My wife and I managed to get the whole collection of the first A-Next from the "5 for a dollar" bins at a couple of conventions. They're not the greatest read ever but for what I paid, I didn't care. My wife liked them enough to buy "The Last Hero Standing" mini series last year.
If you like Tom Defalco, you'll probably like these. They also seem pretty derivitive of early Avenger stories. But I'm a fan of alternative universe type stories so I thought it was kinda fun.

The sucks-o-meter is beginning to register...
I wonder if Cap saw the same cosmetic surgeon that Jessica Drew saw...

While I've never read A-Next, I have most issues of Spider-Girl, and it's actually a very good product for classic readers. The downside is that most enemies are sons / daughters of old enemies, but besides that the stories are good and "fresh" despite the settings, and characterization is also very nice, so I would generally recommend it. PS, Cap died in Last Hero Standing #5 and was turned into a constellation (looking like his shield) by Thor

It seeems like 'New' A-Next, with Spidergirl and what looks like the bastard child of Werewolf by Night and Wolverine in the upper right side.
Is the speedster Luna, daughter of Quicksilver and Crystal?

Is the speedster Luna, daughter of Quicksilver and Crystal? the wolfie dude is sabreclaw, wolverine's son. his mom is supposedly a savage land babe... the speedster is blue streak. dunno much about her save that hawkeye trained her. as far as the quality, wellll, I bought the original series and enjoyed it. Is it great comics? No, but did I read it and feel like a twelve year old? Yes. More fun and simple plots than a lot of books these days and its something you can share with a young reader. there are worse things...

I remember a Wolverine one-shot by Simonsen and Mignola where Wolverine had a kid with a savage land woman (or so it was implied). So, DeFalco did some research, or maybe a coincidence? as far as the quality, wellll, I bought the original series and enjoyed it. Is it great comics? No, but did I read it and feel like a twelve year old? Yes. More fun and simple plots than a lot of books these days and its something you can share with a young reader. there are worse things... I feel like that about DeFalco´s FF. Even with the waaay out of character Sue Richards.

I am still very undecided about Avengers Next, but I think I’ll at least take a look when it hits the shelves. Thanks for the 2¢…

A full preview of the first six pages of Avengers Next #1 has been made available. You can see it at Newsarama (along with previews of Irredeemable Ant-Man #2 and Fantastic Four: The End #1) or at Comic Book Resources (with the same Ant-Man preview).

The FF break up?? They go their separate ways?!??!
Man, that's just CRAZY. That would never, ever happen in the comics. Bah. Doom scoffs at such a notion.

Picked up and read the new Avengers Next today at lunch. It was a lot more comic-booky than the drawn out soap opera-like stuff in New Avengers and Civil War. It was not dark and there was not this undertone that everything in the world sucks . I liked the art, there was a good bit of action, lots of snappy banter. It reminded me of some of the stuff I read back in the day. I had never read any of the A Next stuff before, but I liked it well enough.

I've always liked Tom DeFalco as a writer, although my impresion from reading different comments is that I'm definely in the minority here. He is another one of those writers who I really enjoy because of their ability to mix "serious" situations with humorous ones. In this sense I put him in the same cathegory as writers like Kurt Busiek, Peter David & John Byrne.

And, of course, the late Mark Gruenwald...

I ended up buying Avengers Next this week. I liked the style, but something bothered me. The team is supposedly the next generation of Avengers, several years into the future…but they’re teenagers. I’m perfectly capable of enjoying comics with teenage protagonists (Young Avengers, Runaways, early Amazing Spider-Man, etc.), but for the entire official Avengers team to be made up of teens seems wrong. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes seem to have lost their gravitas. Maybe if I think of them as Young Avengers Next, it’ll go better…?

I enjoyed it for the most part. Would have preferred if a few of the still alive "old Avengers" (Wanda, Vision) were still around, but it's a nice start, and I liked the identity of the villain. All in all, waiting for issue 2 !

It's a soild read that delivers old-shool 1980's comic goodness. I enjoy Mr. DeFalco's work and the nostaligia it carries with it.

A couple of folks talked about how this reads as a simpler comic. I picked up the "Last Planet Standing" series from Avenger's next world.
I think it was rex eho said they felt like a 12 year old. That nails it for me. That's what made it enjoyable. I hadn't read any of the other stuff from this universe, but I'm thinking about it. Simple comic fun is something that I miss.

www.marvelcomics.com if you go to the scanned comic section they have the entire run of Last Hero. I read Last Planet first and didn't understand the signifigance of the 'new star'. The I read last hero and got it. Both are pretty good action comic style stories.

I have never really enjoyed DeFalco's work, and none of these characters "grab" me. Admittedly, that's just from a picture - but a picture intended as a marketing tool. I'll likely give this one a miss.

Balok, I know what you mean by the artwork, it was the same for me. But once you start reading you get into the old-comic style feeling and it's really not bad.
Go try one from the Marvel site if you ever get in the mood for some simple comic fun.

In related news, Marvel’s solicitations for July reveal that the MC2 Fantastic Five will be getting an appropriate five-issue limited series by Tom DeFalco and Ron Lim. I’m on board for this one: I enjoyed DeFalco and Paul Ryan’s original short-lived F5, which was in a sense a continuation of their collaboration on pre-“Onslaught” FF. Here’s the solicitation copy:
