So, we've batted around John Byrne for a few days... how about another '80's influencer? One can't deny that Miller is as responsible as anyone for the state of comics today -- I mainly speak of a darker, grittier world filled with anti-heroes. You'll note I left out The Dark Knight Strikes Again. I figured Frank, Klaus, and Lynn would be embarassed if they knew that we knew their names were attached to that project . I voted for Dark Knight -- I can still recall the moment I finished the first issue. Never before or since have I closed a book, flipped it over, and immediately started re-reading it.

I voted for his Daderedil run, even though I'm not a big fan of Miller. I like my heroes not quite so dark and gritty, and because of this I often found Miller's work rather depressing (albeit always very good in terms of quality).

I, too, voted for DD. I did read Miller´s DD only a few years ago and was really surprised what he did accomplish. His art was high-class even for today´s scale. Btw, just recently I was likewise impressed when reading the hardcover book of Steranko´s Nick Fury - another pleasant surprise.

I'm not really able to vote in this because I've never really read much of Miller's work. I'm not that into the darker, grimier stuff and thats always been the area he's worked in. From what I have read his DD is really good but I've only read a small amount.
I've recently been looking into The Dark Knight Returns in trade. I know its critically acclaimed but would someone who has never really been into the darker stuff enjoy it? I'm thinking yes but I'm wondering if anyone has a similar view as me and has read DKR.

I do not generally go for the darker stuff and I absolutely love Dark Knight. It is Batman as Bob Kane originally intended him to be. If you've ever read the first several issues of Detective Comics, you know Batman used to carry a gun. This is that type of take-no-prisoners Batman. It is an Elseworlds story, yet fits into the mythos we've known over the past 67 years. There is not a lot of gore, there is some language. Obviously the themes are adult in nature. Many DCU characters make appearances, some as you might not expect them. The reader is required to have at least a working knowledge of the DCU and Batman's world in general.
Read it!!

I voted for the Dark Knight. I liked the "new" look on an old character. At the time I thought it was a futuristic "what if" type story, but then DC started to intergrate some of the ideas into the regular line. Before DK, Batman was everybody's buddy, especialy Superman. Not so after DK. I think some other writers saw what Miller could do and tried to breathe some new life into old characters.
