...the covers to Avengers #115 and Defenders #8 (which are labeled as prologues and included for "completeness")... From your description I would guess not... Guess I will have to hunt down a Defenders Essentials and/or the actual issue(s)! Not exactly an unpleasant task...

I finished the hardcover collection last night. Sharkar, the story where the Knight's stoney-situation is resolved is in this volume, but not the story where he is originally turned to stone.
I liked this "epic", although there have been other Avengers stories I've liked better. The sheer number of characters was fun, as were some of the individual battles. I thought Englehart's dialogue for both the Surfer and the Vision paled in comparison to former scribes' handling of these two. The Cap/Namor battle was nice, and the inclusion of Sunfire was a bonus. I agree with Tana's assessment that the Thor/Hulk battle stopped short of being truly "one for the ages"... their previous encounter in JIM #112 also didn't go all the way.
At any rate, it was a fun read -- glad I bought it as it is a nice-looking volume and a nice addition to my Avengers library.

My favorite moment in the Cap- Subby fight is when Namor makes a comment about respecting Cap as he is the only other surviving superhuman from WW II. I thought the relationship between those two was well handled by Englehart.

Thanks, dlw...I found out the issue I'm looking for is Defenders #4. The Enchantress kisses him and turns him to stone. Geez, that poor guy has had the worst luck with women! EDIT: added dlw's quote

Man, are you guys bringing up memories. I bought this series back when it was first published and I was 17, listening to my 8 track tapes in my Roadrunner! The Avengers and Defenders were two of my favorite team comics back in the day. This is what I mean when I talk about Steve Englehart being a vastly underrated and underappreciated writer. Is this the first time you've read this storyline?
P.S. Bender has done the one thing that forty plus years of super hero wars couldn't do. . .destroy the Avengers.

Welcome to the AA! boards, Dave74. Fantastic avatar! Is this the first time you've read this storyline? For me, yes...I read it in the tpb in the last couple of years. I read the whole thing in one sitting. I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to read it when it was originally published, since it was essentially a bi-weekly series (as Roy Thomas and Englehart refer to it). But alas, that was during my largely self-imposed exile from comics!
