OK, you guys barbecued me when I put Darky up against Apocolypse.
There is one pre-comdition on this battle. Thanos is a planner. He has had a little time to study Darkseid before the battle.
Go to it

Thanos THANOS THAAAAANNNNNOOOOOSSSSSSSSS
Darkseid may be pretty powerful, but even with all his advisors and crownies, his plans are foolish at best.
Thanos is a real tactician, and he's no slouch when it comes to fighting up close and personal either, so with your study time stipulation, Thanos takes it.

So yeah, Darksied takes on Superman all the time. Lets not forget Thanos took on Thor and Thing at the same time and put the smack down on them both with ease.

If it's all about long term slight edge to Thanos.
If it's up close, Darkseid can disintegrate you on a whim, so Thanos is going down. Really, Thanos is just a worse Darkseid in every way.

Well, it's often true that if you give someone sufficient time to plan, they can defeat anyone. Batman has demonstrated that he can take down the Justice League if you give him a chance to plan for them (Ra's al Ghul stole his plans and implemented them more or less successfully, am event that drove a wedge between the JL and Bats for awhile).
I gotta go with Thanos if he has any time to plan. He's much smarter than Darkseid. I'd even go with Thanos if he gets the drop on ol' Squarehead. But head to head in some kind of duel, the Omega Effect probably gives Darkseid the edge. Even that might depend on whether Thanos is currently in favor with Ms. D or not.

I am glad to see this one turned out to much more of an even match than the whole Darkseid/apocalypse debacle.
I really think as long as Thanos had awareness of Darseids powers, like the Omega effect, he would take it.

It's nice that you mention the Omega Effect, because I still haven't figured what it is. I mean, I know it's rays coming out of Darkseid's eyes, but what does it really do? is it just another disintegrator like beam? he used it on Galactus on one occasion, with no effect.

I'm just as confused as you are, Shiryu. It seems like the Omega effect varies as to the degree of power from story to story. I've always assumed it was a high powered disintegration ray that had the uncanny ability to change course and follow a target like a heat-seaking missile.

I kid, I kid. the omega effect does what darkseid wants it to do. it's a manifestation of his power and it has a bunch of different effects like teleportation, matter shifting, and disintegration . Darkseid is probably more powerful than Thanos, but thanos is much more cunning. He'll always have a way to gain more power in mind. In fact he would probably take on Darkseid with the intent of stealing his power. All out slugfest, two of them just suddenly appear I would give the edge to Darkseid. Give Thanos five minutes to prepare and he wins, hands down.

Interesting... but it reminds me a little of Thor's hammer in the early Lee days. It could come up with new powers every time they were needed.

Still voting for Darkseid. If Thanos has time to plan, then so does Darkseid, and Darkseid has more cronies -- a whole planet's resources to build a deceitful web that would draw Thanos in.
Besides, if Thanos hoped to win the favor of Lady Death by taking out Darkseid, he might find himself betrayed by her in the last minute, because Darkseid gives Lady Death plenty of devotion in his own way.
Darkseid might not be the cunning tactician that Thanos has shown himself to be, but he maintains power out of shrewd cruelty that has been perfected in its application. He surrounds himself in a tight protective web, and I'm not sure even Thanos could find a way in without being detected. It would come down to a fight, and Darkseid wins that.

Thanos always manages to sabotage himself... I mean, he had the all the infinity gems at one point! He had absolute mastery over everything, yet he still blows it by allowing his own insecurites/faults/ego to act as his greatest obstacle.
I'm not saying Darkseid is better, but rather Thanos will do something to beat himself.
