What do you consider to actually be worth smiting someone for?

Nothing. "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Or, better yet, send a PM if someone has really ticked you off.

Very little. I've only dropped a few smites, and they have been on people who I feel misrepresented what I had to say to make their counterargument easier to construct (the so-called strawman) or taken a quote out of context. I think I've dropped *maybe* a half-dozen smites in the months I've been here. I've dropped far more exalts.

HAH! Good one Nutcase.
Anyone making what I consider to be highly negative contributions to the forum- not disagreeing with me, or doing what Balok says otherwise I'd rarely cease smiting, but genuinely causing damage to the forum as a hole. In the last 4 months or so, I've dropped... I dunno, a half dozen smites tops? I'd say less. A lot more exalts.

I've only dropped 2 smites since I've been here. I think it's only needed if someone is being grossly negative just for the sake of negativity, not trying to make a point.

Unlsee memory betrays me, I doubt I have smiten anyone ever since the board is active, except poor Dlw (or was it Van ?) once, when I didn't know what those buttons were for, so I clicked one in the hope that something would happen ^^' (I made up for it eventually ;D)
In theory, I would smite only for very rude/insulting/offensive posts, but as moderator I would take different steps, so even that is not an option.

I didn't notice once on the this post where anyone said "I'd smite him because he smote me.
I just hope that is something everyone can remember.
I know that it has happened to most of us and several on this board, have done this. What's the point.
If we all did like DLW said originally maybe we are all better off. DLW had a slight issue with me to start with. I wasn't ticking him off but he had an issue. He could've sote me every time that issue came up. Instead he Pm'ed me and I actually learned something. He helped me to be a better member of this forum, I think.
Next time Doom ticks you off, rather than fight with him on a thread. Talk to him in PM. He'll usually talk. Or if Bong is irritating you by continually mentioning your arch-nemesis, don't worry about it.
Oh, well, I'm done preachifying.

I'm sorry, why am I used as an example? (Though incidentally, I was smotified again) Are you in some way implying I am argumentative??

I cracked only once and used the Smite. It was before work, I was tired, cranky and read something that just ticked me right off and I did a cowardly sniper smite. I felt bad about it and eventually double exalted the person to make up for it. ...and no it was not Doom

I personally have never used the Smite myself. I prefer to voice something, either in PM or on the board. I occasionally exalt, but only rarely.

Why do people even care about this? It's an imaginary negative. It's not like a credit rating or something. When are we going to kill this feature? Personally instead of smites and exalts i'd rather see a friend shout out or something-something that lets you know who thought you put up a good post. My thirty or so exalts are nice, but I'm even more impressed when I know they came from someone like dlw66, ua2 or tana, night phantom, and a lot of other good folks on here who put up some really good posts.

I'm sorry, why am I used as an example? (Though incidentally, I was smotified again) Are you in some way implying I am argumentative?? My dear brother Doomsie, I used you as an example BECAUSE you get smitten so often. and because sometimes it doesn't really seem merited.

I'm not sure that I smited more than a coupel of times since ever -- but that's not because I think it's inappropriate -- it's because everybody else is so sensitive about it.
The followijng offenses are worth smiting someone for:
Changing your avatar so often nobody knows who you are Changing your user name so often nobody knows who you are Not making sense Reminding me of someone I hate Denigrating quality comics Being a jerk
I realize all of these are subjective -- for me -- hitting the smite button is one more fun thing that I could do in my day -- but I can't because I'l lhurt someone's feelings

I *almost* smote today, but then decided it would be better to discuss the specifics - and that's the problem I have with the smiting (and, yes, the exalting) - no commentary attached. You can't explain why you've done either one, which I think is important.
