www.mycomicshop.com/res/images_products/import_from_office/largepics/BARKW001A.JPG [/img] There have already been some complaints about Marvel's upcoming Marvel Divas limited series. I get where the complaints come from and would like it if they had called the series something else. On the other hand, I really like all 4 characters (Hellcat, Black Cat, Firestar, and Monica Rambeau who is apparently going back to calling herself Photon again) and am happy to see them getting some spotlight. Part of the concern that I've seen expressed involves the sexy poses on the cover for a book that is supposed to appeal more to girls. Some people are saying that isn't the way it should be or that it won't appeal to girls. It may not appeal to girls but only because there just aren't that many girls (Sorry Tana) who are into superheroes but I don't think it will be because the women look sexy. Look at ads for Desperate Housewives. Through the years they've shown the women looking scantily clad (Or even nude though the whole body wasn't shown) eating apples, lounging over washing machines, or walking through flames. You certainly can't say that Desperate Housewives does't appeal to females. I wish the artists at the comic book companies would draw the characters in ways that are proportionally possible but I don't think it's so bad to have them strike a pose, especially for a 1st issue cover or a promotion. I do hope that every issue's cover won't look like this but it probably will since that's what they did with the Ms. Marvel book. Anyway, I wanted to throw this out there and see what other people's opinions on the book were at this early stage. I for one and very willing to give the book a chance and am optimistic.

I tried to get a picture up of the promo but I can't seem to get it to appear. Maybe someone who is better at this can have more luck.

I bought the comic not knowing it was for girls--but I will say one thing about my experience in games. We are constantly told that if you have a female character, she MUST have huge breasts. It's a fact--people will probably lie and deny it, but it is true. Having large breasts appeals to most males, and it doesn't turn off most females. Sex sells.

I liked the cover, but after leafing through it, it looked pretty lame, so i put it down.

It was pretty lame and boring. I only bought it because I like the characters. Happens a lot these days

Hellcats boobs are so big it looks like she's lost her balance!! ] Good heavens, that's the cover?? Sheesh-- and this is supposed to appeal to girl readers how?? In fact, do we know if the target here is girl readers, or is it women readers? If it's girls (which I kind of suspect-- the characters look pretty much like mega-amply-endowed versions of those horrible "Bratz" dolls), then I don't want my 10-year-old daughter going near this book. Also, an annoying but major quibble: Monica is not a tart. She's one of the least tart-like female heroes Marvel's ever had-- which is partly why I've always liked her. A "look at my body" pose is quite demeaning to this character. Black Cat, sure-- geeze, she IS a tart, and happily so. But Monica? Never. HB

This is just me losing track-- but, is Patsy Walker-Baxter still Hellcat? (And, if so, then she's not dead anymore? Was she a Skrull too?) And is Greer. . . Nelson(?) still Tigra? Did she survive that horrible attack early in the Hood's big scheme?
Hey, and not to beat this thread to death, but calling this group "Divas" is a little ridiculous. The title "Diva" itself implies an individual virtually without peer in their field. A case can certainly be made for Photon, but the rest (much as I may or mayn't like them) aren't even close to that exclusive upper tier. It also implies a resounding self-confidence and virtuosity of ability that isn't reflected in this group (except for Photon, again). This group would, of course, have to have the likes of She-Hulk, Storm, Invisible Woman, DEFINITELY Black Widow, the Wasp (bringherbackbringherbackbringherback) to really conform to truth-in-advertising. I'm sure there are others, but those came immediately to mind.

Did she survive that horrible attack early in the Hood's big scheme? Yes, Patsy is Hellcat. She wasn't a skrull, she was brought back during Busiek's run on Avengers and Thunderbolts. However, Mockingbird was involved so there is a slight connection. Basically, an apparition of Mockingbird from beyond the grave appeared to Hawkeye, so he mounted a rescue mission over in Thunderbolts, where the team went into hell to save her from Mephisto. However, it turned out that it was actually Hellcat who was trapped there, and that Damion Hellstrom had conjured up the Mockingbird image to trick Hawkeye into rescuing Hellcat. Greer Nelson is still Tigra and she did survive In fact, over in Avengers: Initiative, she just formed a newm fourth (!) Avengers team called the Avengers Resistance, which consists of her and some New Warriors people including former Avenger Justice (and... Rage? Or Firestar? I forget exactly who). It's actually kind of cool, believe it or not, because the storyline seems to basically be about Tigra reclaiming her self respect after Bendis creamed her like that. In the story, Norman Osborn is doling out his assignments to registered heroes and he tells Tigra she has to work for the Hood (or something like that, I forget the details). Instead, she trashes the place, meets up with other disgruntled formerly registered heroes and forms a resistence group to take down HAMMER. She's quite forceful about it and seems to actually be the team leader. I've never been a Tigra fan but I am hopeful about this storyline.

Wow- I HAVE all of those issues! I'd completely forgotten about them--- thanks Scott. This certainly sounds like the same kind of overly-complex ressurection scenario that's been discussed in a couple of threads lately. . . You're scaring me-- that Avengers Resistance sparks my interest. I. . . I might give it a try. HB

I skimmed through Divas #1 and it was kind of nice. Some good continuity moments, especially regarding the relationship between the Black Cat and Thomas Firehart/Puma, which has been an ongoing (if on and off) thing in Spider-Man. It does however look like a Marvel version of Birds of Prey, and I didn't like the art at all.
