With the powerful lineup they had.
Dr. Strange Namor Hulk Silver Surfer Valkyrie Could the Avengers have beaten them IF the Defenders had a strong team unity rather than an individulistic mentality?
I think the Defenders with those players could've taken all comers.

I think the Defenders with those players could've taken all comers. On paper the Defenders have a very strong roster, but at least two of them are not and never have been team players -- Namor and the Hulk. Namor, so far as I know, has only been a team player on Cap's Invaders, and then only marginally. Sure, you could turn that around and write them differently, but in character neither one is big on taking orders. But, yes, if you want to ignore those issues, that roster would give any Avengers roster trouble. And regardless, you could make a good case that the Defenders with only Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer could mop the floor with a lot of the weaker Avengers rosters. RSC

So on Earth 617 where Hulk, Namor and the Surfer aren't so self involved. This would be a hard team to beat.

Since Strange, Namor, and the Hulk are all Avengers, things might get tough for Val and the Surfer…

you guys answer questions like politicians. For the purpose of this question alone, they are all firmly within the ranks of the Defenders.

you guys answer questions like politicians. You ask the question like a politician, leaving the conditions too vague to analyze. Who is in the Avengers line-up? What are the conditions of the confrontation? What are the motivations of the various combatants?

If the Defenders were a united, cohesive team then they wouldn't be the Defenders. 'Nuff said

Im sorry, I didn't know that they qualifier "If the Defenders had a stronger sense of team unity" was unclear. As Doom stated they wouldn't be the same, but it's like the Watcher going What If? As far as analysis, it isn't required. The Defenders as listed, if they had a stronger team unity.

That's a very tough roster to beat... I suppose the Avengers should have to put them one against the other (for example upsetting Hulk), and after all the often won against stronger enemies. As a raw power fight however, I think the Defenders would get the upper hand.
