Bendis is leaving "Mighty Avengers." Is he being replaced? Maybe. BUT . . . he's going to be writing a new title called "Dark Avengers," which is apparently the core of a post-Secret Invasion storyline entitled "Dark Reign." I'm not exactly impressed by what I'm hearing. www.newsarama.com/comics/080909-marvel-diamond-summit.html

Hopefully Mighty Avengers is left alone after the Secret Invasion, and that Dark Reign does not affect Mighty Avengers in any way. I'd like to try the book out, and see if it's any good. However, before I can do that, I actually have to see the team in action!

Finally at least there will be a Bendisless Avengers title!!! *coughAvengerstheIntiativecough* I was fearing that "Dark Riegn" would be yet another crossover, but it appears it'll just be more in line with "Decimation" and "The Intiative" in which certain story elements will impact these books. That being said, I'm not exactly excited here. Now comes the big question: who should write Mighty Avengers? Honestly, I'd love to see an old hand (read: classic Avengers writer) take on the team for a little. It would be interesting to see a Thomas-penned Avengers dealing with the modern Marvel Universe. On the other hand, there are so many great writers out there that would be fantastic on Avengers. Brubaker, Peter David, Greg Pak, Matt Fraction, Brian Reed . . . Oh! The possibilities are endless!

I've always wanted to see Peter David writing the Avengers... Dare we even dream? It's hard to imagine Joe Q assigning David the title. After all, as a writer, David has always shown great respect for the Marvel Universe and his readers. That may just be too radical as a followup to Bendis.

Just saying. As for the news- still haven't heard enough about "Dark Reign" or the Dark Avengers to judge (Though Deadoto? YAY!), though I'm hoping it ties into the villain stuff they're building for next year. I'm glad Bendis is leaving "Mighty" though- although I enjoyed it, I would rather see a different writer take it on, partiuclarly since Bendis always had far, far less affinity for this team.

...You do know David himself has said he prefers working at Marvel now to ever before, and feels it's BETTER than ever before, right? Just saying. I really couldn't care less whether he says he likes Marvel these days or not (As if he can afford to say otherwise. Wouldn't it be biting the hand that feeds you?). I based my comments on his writing. Based on what I've read of his work, he really respects the history of the Marvel Universe and is consistent with previously established characterizations. That is the opposite of anything I've read from Bendis. Now it may turn out that some of the characters that Bendis wrote inconsistenly were written that way intentionally because they were Skrulls and it was meant to be a clue. The irony there is that there have been defenders of his all along saying "He doesn't write characters in ways that don't fit their personalities." That aside, I hope that David's writing of MA will be as good as his work on FN Spider-man. It can't be worse than what Bendis has done the last several months. Even if he writes the characters badly, which I don't think he will, if he has them present it will be step in the right direction.

This news makes me slightly hopeful that I can start picking up an Avengers title again. Of course it all depends on who is assigned to the title and where they go with it. I can only hope they will immediately ditch Ares - perhaps with the help of a certain thunder god?

I'd really like Peter David on the book. And he is not that *new* really, he has been writing for at least 20 years, if not more. However, things like the team membership could be up to Quesada more than to the individual writer.
Still, it's a good news ;D Bendis was clearly unconfortable with this title IMO

I didn't expect Bendis to get off but he did.
Now I bet everyone is waiting for Bendis to get off NA so that the roster can go back to being the Avengers that fans know so that characters Luke Cage stay away from the Avengers.

Luke Cage is one of my favorite Avengers ever.There. I said it. COME AND GET ME! While Luke cage (or Power Man, as I like to call him) is FAR from my favorite Avenger, he is one of my favorite Marvel heroes, just not when Bendis writes him. His characterization in PM/IF (and even Pulse) was waaaaay better, a man of the steets who never forgets where he's from, but did not have to resort to "thuggish" characterization and unnecessary foul language (whatever happened to "Sweet Christmas" *sigh*). If you read PM/IF you can see a true camaraderie with Iron Fist, Misty, and Colleen Wing, something Luke never quite achieved with the "New" Avengers. He also had some great team-ups with Spidey, and their history was never addressed during Bendis run (unless I missed something). Even his reunion with Iron Fist seemed glossed over, IMO. And his relationship with Jessica, the whole "baby-mama" thing must be one of the most un-romantic couplings in Marvel history. Bendis' Luke Cage just ain't the Power Man I grew up with, and he ain't no Avenger, either. I respect your love of Luke, but if you go back and read some PM/IF issues, you might get where I'm coming from.

Having never read any of those issues or really had any sort of interest in the character before recently, my love of Luke Cage comes from the issues Bendis did write.
If anything, Cage became a much more interesting character because here was a guy from the streets, really low-level when it comes to power . . . rising up to the elite of super-herodom and actually making a difference. His romance with Jessica Jones has a great sense of realism to it and makes them one of my favorite couples ever.
No disrespect to your love of the character, of course. There are certain characters I enjoyed more in older issues than I do now.

If you said Ares, then I'd wonder a tad because his conversion to hero has been a pretty bad one, but Luke is cool with me. I think I read somewhere- maybe even here that Roger Stern planned to put him on the team way back when. Luke has marvel lineage and is a great character when used properly. Do I agree that Bendis has sort of ignored his characterization? Yep, I do. But I blame Bendis and not Luke for that (Luke being fictional and all...). Luke ain't my favorite, but I don't hate him. Keep in mind I'm someone who'd put Moondragon, Firebird, Forgotten One and Starfox on the same team if I had my druthers, so I understand left field choices...

Again, an example of how Bendis has done a disservice to the character of Cage, IMO. Bendis' handling of Cage could be interprted as "really low-level when it comes to power..."and " rising up to the elite of super-herodom...." that is, like in your case, if you have just been introduced to Cage since Bendis' takeover. But for me, Luke is far from "low-level when it comes to power" or "rising up to the elite...." When the FF needed a replacement for THE THING, they chose Luke. I've always thought of him as one of the most powerful Marvel heroes. And joining the Fantastic Four has got to be "elite" status in the MU, maybe just as high an honor as being on Cap's team. The FF membership happened about 30 years ago, so you can see how Bendis' depiction of Luke as a "rising, low-level star" just doesn't work for old-school Power Man fans. Stuff like that is why a lot of old-school Avengers fans don't approve with Bendis' handling of the characters we grew up with. And in a couple of months, hopefully someone with respect and knowledge of the Avengers (and a general knowledge of the MU characters) will take over.

This really doesn't change my opinion of Luke Cage one bit, honestly. No offense or anything. The characer always seemed boring to me and was far from being a key player in the MU for quite a while. What I like about Bendis' Avengers is that Luke Cage is now almost as important as Iron Man. I happen to really like the idea of him having "risen up." And compared to how long he was a member of the Fantastic Four, is it even close to how long he's been an Avenger?

If Peter David was going to write Mighty Avengers how many fans would accept him, I know he did a good run the Hulk but my dad doesn't like him for what he did Aquaman when he gave Aqu aman a left hook on his left hand.

The rumors are confirmed-
Gage is writing "Initiative" solo.
Slott on Mighty Avengers.
Good news indeed. It makes me more likely to stay on both, and I have a feeling Slott will adjust very well to a mroe classic line-up- while Gage has produced stronger "Initiative" stuff than Slott alone.

I've heard that the team is going to have the more traditional team of Avengers, with at least one found member and all members that have been Avengers before. No Spider-Man and no Wolverine.

Slott and Gage have earned my respect (hey, they can't do any worse than Bendis)
Slott's INITIATIVE started out good, went through a rough arc or two, but has become one of my favorite books recently. I think a key was dealing with established characters more (and staying true to their characterization, unlike Bendis) and not as much with the recruits and the Gauntlet (one of the lamest new characters, and that's saying something with all the crap I've read over the last few years). Taskmaster, Constrictor, Bengal, YES! Cloud 9, Hardball, KIA- WHO CARES?!?!
And Gage impressed me with House of M:Avengers, especially at a time when it seemed like every writer forgot how to write a good Avengers story. He also apparantly has been key in reinvigorating Avengers:Initiative.
I really think Millar, Brubaker, and Abnett/Lanning are Marvel's top writers at this point, but I think Gage and Slott can be just as good, with a respect for MU characters, and especially if they can distance themselves from Bendis and the sub-par writing he's put Avengers fans through.
Glad to hear about Bendis' departure, and I won't be buying any Dark Reign stuff. The real world is dark enough, and the Avengers should be one of the bright spots.

Just one more issue to go and Bendis is off the book.
I heard from a fan that he won't be buying the book because he said Dan Slott doesn't know how to redfine heavy hitters.
