Who would you say is the best supporting character in the Marvel Universe, and why? It can be anyone, even a lead character with his/her own book. You simply have to believe they're the best supporting character, or have the potential to be. And tell what about them makes you think so, or what would have to happen for them to be. I'm going to name three that instantly come to mind-- none of them does a thing for me as the star of an ongoing book, but I love seeing all three of them show up as guest stars, and usually sparks fly when they do: Nick Fury Doctor Strange NamorFury works so well in juxtaposition to costumed super heroes. He's like the ultimate cop, who can stand there next to a super-powerful being and not be intimidated. He could write Thor a parking ticket and not break a sweat! Strange brings a lot of color and other-worldliness to a story when he shows up. Since I've never been a regular reader of any of his series, I don't know if his true power levels or limits have ever been definitively established, so that requires a good deal of finesse by the writer (or else he becomes the magical solution to anything). But he always has a different perspective from everyone else in the room, never meekly goes along (and often reacts negatively, even to someone like Cap or Reed Richards), and yet his motives and virtue can never be questioned. Cool. Namor is the ultimate Marvel half-hero, half-villain. And, with him, you never quite know what you're going to get. He was, for me, easily the best thing about the ILLUMINATI one-shot, for example. He's just ornery and cantankerous. Sometimes, that gets awfully tiresome. Usually, though, he gets up on that moral high-horse and rants and raves with the best of 'em. Quicksilver longs to be Namor when he grows up. ;D Thoughts? Others?

Well, I have to say Jarvis. Whenever he's around... dust flies! and Wolverine, I seen him go to his death (more than once) supporting Storm. see, he's not the loner we all know and love, he's a mommy's boy!
peace!

Hmm, I agree on Jarvis, for the Avengers stories, and Namor more in general. Of course I also love when Spidey shows up in guest appareances, but he is one of my Marvel favs so I may not be too objective. Another one I liked was Paladin, I would have wanted to see more of him, but that never really happened, and pretty much the same goes for Starfox.

From a Silver/Bronze age perspective, I'd say the Hulk. Whether it was the Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, or the FF, something big was about to happen.

I too was glad to see him back. The Avenger I always wanted to see be a little more active was Hell-cat. I like her but Moondragon cut her stay so short. (Unless of course you count the Avengers Reborn thing, which I don't)

Unfortunately I didn't (and can't). Still I'm happy that Eros is making a few more appereances, he is a very interesting character who didn't appear much in the Avengers after Stern's run.

I've always liked the Shroud, even from his early days in Super-Villain Team-Up. He could probably never carry his own book, but he's a great "guest-star."

You really can't have a best supporting character list without Jarvis. I also say Jim Rhodes is a pretty good support charater, as is the Falcon.

I've always had a soft spot for Willy Lumpkin.
Mary-Jane and Aunt May are ALWAYS good supporting characters, Jarvis is a given

I'm surprised, Doom that you would pick Aunt May, seeing how she is an ex-girlfriend of Doom's superior Doc Ock.
(p.s. I really am trying to straighten my son out. He still loves that doc Ock tho'. I think it's because he turns good at the end of the movie. Blasted movies)

Otherwise, Doom shal be.... .... ....displeased....

How about Krypto? Or Beppo the Supermonkey?
No? OK...
How about Rick Jones? A lot of history there.

How about Mrs. Arbogast from the 80's Iron Man? There was a gal with some moxie.

Too bad she was eventually completely dropped from IM's book... The 2 supporting characters I miss most there are her & Bethany Cabe...

Rick Jones!
He was always showing up some where in the early days: Avengers/Cap/Hulk/Captain Marvel.

Did Rick ever feel like just an add-on to draw teen-agers in to anyone else?
In the Avengers and Caps he appeared in it almost fe;t like they forced him into the story.

I don't know if anyone already mentioned him somewhere or not.
But I really liked Duane Freeman as Avengers security liason. It's like one of us got the job. I was actually sad to read that they killed him off in Kangs attack on Washington.
It was great to see them use someone who really cared about the team as liason. He was a strong enough character to get into Iron Man's face when he thought it was needed. He had good moral judgement. In the short run he had with them I think his character brought a lot to the team.
