A comic book legend and an incredible creator has passed away.

Very sad news. He will be missed. He was an original and instrumental in the resurgence of the X-Men (did wonderful work on the Legion over at DC, too). My condolences to his family. RIP, Dave.

Very fond memories of Dave from both Legion and X-Men. Probably more influential than he'll ever be given credit for, given that two giants (Mike Grell and John Byrne, respectively) followed him on those books and perhaps earned more accolades...

My favorite C-Rum story is about Nightcrawler. Dave originally designed him for the Legion, but for some reason he didn't get the gig, and Dave polished him off for the All New All Different X-Men, and the rest is history.

A very sad news. I remember reading his early issues on the italian X-Men book and in the letters page there was a lot of criticism for his art, but I quite liked it. Without his work, the new X-Men possibly would not be the characters they are now.
Hopefully this is the last great artist passing away in 2006. In the last few months it has been an ecatomb of great comics people leaving us. I think it's 5 up to now for this year.

My understanding, and I don't remember where I heard this, is that he already had the gig - he was working on Legion but left DC after some sort of dispute.

I read a story in the paper about his passing -- the tiff with DC was over creator-ownership rights. Imagine that? Dave must have been about 20 years ahead of his time!
