I think C.B. Cebulski has written some excellent stories over the past few years, including Loners, I (Heart) Marvel: Marvel Ai, and the previous two Marvel Fairy Tale series. For those unfamiliar with the Fairy Tale "franchise", stories and fables are retold using Marvel Comics characters in the place of the traditional main characters. Stories that have been previously retold include Little Red Riding Hood, the tale of The Tortoise and the Eagle, Cinderella, and even the legend of Kwaku Anansi, using the X-Men and Spider-Man characters. Now, Earth's Mightiest Heroes take center stage, and the first story up is Peter Pan.
One of my favorite parts of the Fairy Tale books so far is seeing where characters fit in the story, and Cebulski does his typical great job. I'm not giving away anything you can't see on the cover, but before reading the story, I wouldn't have guessed to use Captain America in the Peter Pan role, but the epilogue to the story completely sold me on why he is a perfect match, as Cebulski's picks often are. Don't worry, I won't give away the rest of the casting, but everything fits well. However, as a longtime Avengers fan, I would have loved to see Fin Fang Foom playing the Crocodile instead of using... a crocodile. Just a nitpick, though.
Even if you've seen Hook, Finding Neverland, Walt Disney's Peter Pan, or read the book, the story remains different enough to warrant another pass, and it's a lot of fun to see these characters placed in very different situations. As great as the writing is, the art is pretty much a perfect match, too. Joao Lemos and Christina Strain team for some gorgeous and appropriately ethereal art, and I really can't wait to see what they team up to do next.
Review Score: 9.0 Outstanding
