Hola.
I am currently working on my collection of Avengers appearances in other books. I am mostly interesting in significant crossovers; book where the Avengers either had a major role, or where the story actually crossed over into Avengers. Examples would be X-Men #9, which is a prominent Avengers appearance, and Iron Man #18, which isn't a major appearance but is directly continued in Avengers #68.
I have been using Bob Fronczak's timeline in the back of Assembled! as a guide, which has been very helpful. There are, however, a hadnful of appearances listed that I don't have info on. I was wondering if anyone on here might know what role the Avengers play in these books, so I can decide if I want to track them down or not. Thing I am not interested in are little cameos, like their one panel appearance in Sub-Mariner #8.
Here's the list of issues I have questions about:
Journey Into Mysery 101 Journey Into Mystery 108 Tales to Astonish 59 Journey Into Mystery 116 Strange Tales 156 Dr. Strange 178 Sub-Mariner 14 Daredevil 69 Iron Man 39 Incredible Hulk 153 Marvel Team-Up 7 Iron Man 74 Thor 233 Marvel team-Up 44 Defenders 44 Ms. Marvel 16 Ms. Marvel 18 Black Panther 14 Black Panther 15 Captain Marvel 51
If you know anything about the Avengers appearances in these issues, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

I've recently read Sub-Mariner #14, and I can tell you the Avengers appearance is on one page only -- the briefest of cameos!

This seems like the sort of research assignment one of our spookier members might enjoy tackling, Scott; so perhaps he will stop by and post a more comprehensive answer.
But just looking at the list I think it is safe to say the '60s books you mention do not contain actual crossovers as you define it--these all seem to be cameos.
JIM #101, #108 and #116 all contain a few panels each of Iron Man, Hank, Jan, etc. It was not uncommon for the Avengers to make appearances in JIM and Iron Man's Suspense tales, an early nod to the intertwining Marvel universe. And #116's Trial of the Gods is even mentioned in Avengers #16 when the Wasp explains Thor's absence.
Strange Tales #156 --the Nick Fury story, art by Steranko--contains a few panels of various heroes, including the Avengers (shown with the Hulk for some reason), the FF, the X-Men, Spidey, et al. These heroes do not take part in the action.
Daredevil #69 features a team up of the Panther and DD (so I assume the Avengers make a cameo, I don't have the issue), and its action takes place prior to Avengers #82, in which DD guest stars.

MTU #7 (Spider-man and Thor) has a story in which the whole world is frozen somehow (I just thumbed back through it.) There is one panel in which we see the Avengers in a frozen state, like a picture negative. Spidey says something to the effect of "It looks like your Avenger buddies are as frozen as the rest of the world." Doesn't get much more insignifcant than that.

I guessed as much; back in the day, if it was a major crossover, they would usually tout it on the cover to hype the appeance, like in X-Men #9 or FF #26. One of my other secret agents has provided me with some mor einfo on this, and it appears most of the issues I asked about were just cameos. The only ones on my list that seem to have any importance to Avengers would be DD 69 and Dr. Strange 178; neither of them really features the Avengers, but the stories from these are continued in Avengers (Avengers 83 and 61 respectively, I believe). This is similar to how Iron Man 18 is continued in Avengers 68. I'll also be looking for MTU 9-11 for a somewhat forgotten Avengers/Kang story that takes place around the time of Avengers 110. The Avengers don't do much in this story, as they are mostly unconscious prisoners of Kang throughout; but it's interesting for the Kang aspect, particularly as it seems to be Kang's last appearance before the Celestial Madonna storyline starts in #129.

Here's the list of issues I have questions about: Journey Into Mysery 101 Journey Into Mystery 108 Tales to Astonish 59 Journey Into Mystery 116 Strange Tales 156 Dr. Strange 178 Sub-Mariner 14 Daredevil 69 Iron Man 39 Incredible Hulk 153 Marvel Team-Up 7 Iron Man 74 Thor 233 Marvel team-Up 44 Defenders 44 Ms. Marvel 16 Ms. Marvel 18 Black Panther 14 Black Panther 15 Captain Marvel 51 Let's see JIM #101, #108 and #116, MTU 7 and Submariner 14 have just been covered In Incredible Hulk 153 they only seem to appear briefly as witnesses at the Hulk's trial ( www.spiderfan.org/comics/reviews/hulk/153.html ) MTU 9 and 10 only has the Avengers in a cameo, as you hinted ( www.samruby.com/MarvelTeam-Up/marvelteamup009.htm ) and mainly features Spidey and Iron-Man first, and Spidey and the Torch later. Tales to Astonish 59 shows a brief Avengers meeting / training session, while Spider-Man, and later Giant-Man, battle the Hulk www.spiderfan.org/comics/reviews/tales_to_astonish/059.htmlStrange Tales 156 can be downloaded for free at www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/comics/cbr/strange%20tales%20156.cbz and a synopsis is present at www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/comics/strangetalesv1_156.htmIt doesn't look like the Avengers have a big cameo though. Dr. Strange 178 has a Black Knight appearance, and can be downloaded at www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/comics/cbr/Dr%20Strange%20v1%20178.cbrI have Iron Man 39 and 74 at home on dvd, will check in a few hours how big the Avengers cameo is. Thor 233 only features Thor going to Avengers Mansion and finding it encased in a force field, with Vision, Hawkeye and Iron-Man inside. www.immortalthor.net/thor231-240.htmlDefenders 44 can be downloaded here www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/comics/cbr/Defenders%20044.cbr . It has Hellcat joining the Defenders, so I suppose that's the Avengers cameo. Ms Marvel 16 has Carol fighting a brain washed Wonder-Man (courtesy of Modok) www.comixtreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35051Ms Marvel 18 has a Beast cameo and a summary here www.comicvine.com/comic/ms-marvel/17990/112672/Black Panther 14 and 15 should be the "Bride of the Panther" storyline, with T'Challa eventually going for Storm. I can't find much else on these issues. Captain Marvel 51 (on sale on Ebay for 2$ ^^) is a battle with the Fourth Dimensional man, a previous enemy of Thor. A summary is here, towards the middle of the page www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/mercurio4d.htm

I thought the Black Panther ishes referred to were from the Panther's original late 70's series (the last two issues after Kirby stopped doing the book). The Panther battles Klaw in New York and several of the Avengers help him out (the Vision was prominent if I remember rightly). I've got them somewhere but it'd take a bit of digging.

Ok, I've got Iron Man 39 and 74 in front of me now. #39 has a 4 pages cameo of the Avengers rescuing Iron-Man from the Mandarin lackeys. Basically IM falls on the ground and the Avengers (Cap, Thor, Falcon in his original outfit (!) and Clint as Goliath) easily prevent the soldiers from kidnapping him. #74 is much less than that, just a 1 panel cameo! Iron Man flies away from Avengers Mansion after the events of Avengers Giant Size #4, and the team waves him goodbye You are probably right. I've found the covers here www.griffenaerie.com/blackpanther/covers/bp_v1_14.jpg and www.griffenaerie.com/blackpanther/covers/bp_v1_15.jpg and it looks like a pretty big cameo. EDIT: I checked Thor 233 too, and it's only a 1 panel cameo of many characters, including some Avengers. All have been trapped in small force fields, and Thor is the only one free.
