This is a link to a podcast that explains EVERYTHING that has happened in New Avengers and Avengers. If you are prone to panic attacks, I wouldn't view it. It's unbelievably complicated.

I know it's all about characters from different timelines and realities--but it's just too much. I mean where does the book Inhumans fit into any of this, for instance? Or A-Force? It's almost like Secret Wars was supposed to kind of bring the Marvel Universe together, but if anything it's made things worse.

It gets worse, HB. I picked up a few Secret Wars related issues and thumbed through them. Two were giant sized as we used to say back in the day, but they were split into separate stories--and guess what? Not only was the art like something a child would draw, but some of the stories were black and white! NO COLOR. They are charging that much money and you don't even get color. It is ridiculous.

Adding to the chaos is that currently there are at least 15 different variations of Captain America in different comics at the same time. There is Steve rogers as an old man, Steve Rogers regular aged in another, then you have The Falcon as Captain America. Then there is a Ms. America, who is female and apparently Hispanic. In another comic there is a black female Captain America. I could go on.
If that wasn't bad enough, now there is a Thor "corps." Hundreds of Thors, copying GOT's Knight Watch.
Also there is a version of the FF where Reed is a farmer. But in another book, Johnny, Ben and Sue are dead and Reed is a villain. Then there is the "back in blue" FF where all are alive. And let's not forget another book where Sue is working for Shield, who are hunting Reed Richards and the Illuminati. This is all within about one month of comics. I'm probably forgetting other variations of the FF.
It is mass chaos and it is getting worse every day. I'm not enjoying 95% of what I'm buying. I picked up 3 comics Thursday and it came to over $16.

Starry you posted a link to a blog on page 6 of this thread, and it mentions how well drawn the megaladon is.
HB glad to meet another fossil fan!
MB--I don't resent the switching of gears. I just don't like blatant copying. My God, the home of Baron Sinister is Bar Sinister. Anybody remember Simon Bar Sinister from Underdog?
You have a point that the switch to a Sword and Sorcery theme was just too quick and jarring.
And for those asking about continuity--there is none.

While I liked the blog you linked to, Starry, I take issue with the megaladon being beautifully drawn. No. That isn't what they looked like. Whatever those spikey gill things were--pure fantasy. Megladon was just a great white but much bigger. My fossil hunter BS detector is glowing read!

Thanks for the link to that blog, Starry. Hah! I am telling you these books are so shamelesly mimicking Game of Thrones, it's just ridiculous. Glad I'm hardly the only one who noticed this.
I agree that Quicksilver doesn't speak the way we remember but on the other hand, which Quicksilver is this? There are so many parallel universes, timelines, worlds--who can say? I don't if you read my post about how Hickman had THANOS saying "How goes it?" to Maximus. Now does that sound like Thanos? Come on. Spiderman maybe, but not Thanos.
Re: A-Force. The book is one of the worst written Marvel comics I have ever read. I have wanted an all female team since the Lady Liberators appeared in Avengers #83. They promised to return, but never did.

Did you all get the latest Avengers World? It is suddenly feeding into Hickman's Cabal storyline(s) and I am completely lost. It is mass chaos. Can anyone tellwhere this story fits into the overall timeline?
Oh and have you guys bought A Force, the all female Avengers? There is zero explanation as to why this team exists or how it fits into the other books. And why is She Hulk the leader with characters like Wasp and Medusa around?
Sigh...this is sad.

SPOILERS: MB I know that none of these plot devices are exactly new, but this isn't a fantasy book. It has been a science fiction book up until this issue and suddenly it is a fantasy book mixed with sci fi. I think the panel where someone hands over a scroll with a house sigil symbol on it, the exact way news is spread in GOT, the book crossed the line. Then there is the accused man (Sinister)who is about to be taken away, but instead demands a trial by combat. The good guy appears to have won, only to be taken down by the seemingly defeated bad guy. Exact same thing happened in GOT. GOT had as a wall that keep zombies out of the various kingdoms, and so does Secret Wars. Dr Strange looking just like Little Finger. The Greek architecture, the sudden switch to everything seeming medieval? All of this in one issue?
I'm going to stick this out, but I am skeptical. I am far from the only person who has noticed these similarities.
Anyway--I don't know why the Cabal was in that ship instead of Reed and the others. The book is confusing.

Well let's hope that maybe this one issue is an homage or tribute to GOT. I can forgive that or actually admire it. But the next issue had better veer into its own territory. Hickman is a very good writer and can do far better than this.

I have SW #2--the art is stellar. BUT I have to say something. Do you all watch Game of Thrones?
This issue has so many blatant similarities to Game of Thrones that IMO it is almost plagiarism. They are even drawing Dr Strange so that he looks just like Little Finger, a major character on GOT. It's very distracting. I could list the blatant similarities but I don't want to do spoilers.
After reading issue #2, I went on line to read some reviews to make sure I wasn't imagining things, but Game of Thrones came up over and over. It is pretty shocking.

Glad you're back, MB. Too grand for ya? Have you picked up Secret Wars? Although I enjoyed it, I have to admit that after two issues, I have no idea who is on what team, if there even are teams at this point (other than the Cabal), and since nobody seems to be fighting anybody, why is it called Secret Wars? I really like Hickman--I really do. But he so overextends himself with thousands of characters that you can't even tell what's going on. He also has a habit of enlisting thousands of heroes, then he devotes an entire issue to just one (like Shang Chi). What's the point of that? A few other complaints: Hickman has turned Captain America into a self-righteous, curmudgeony old goat who is not the least bit likeable anymore IMO. He used to be one of the most likeable character in the MU. And finally, while Hickman is very good at writing dialogue, when he goes wrong it is INCREDIBLY wrong. For instance, he just wrote Thanos saying "how goes it?" HUH? Don't get me wrong, H has done wonders with Thanos, and written some fantastic dialogue for him (for instance, when he and the Cabal visit the Necropolis and find that the Illuminati not only have stockpiled doomsday weapons, but also have prisons with captives, Thanos remarks something to the effect of "I think I'm starting to like these humans.") Another cringe-worthy dialogue moment came when Dr Strange unleashes some crazy demon from hell on the faux Justice League in New Avengers, Hickman has the Black Panther looking up at the monster and saying "My God." He's been saying "Goddess" for the whole series! Any of the other characters, with the exception of DR Strange, would have been fine saying that. On the bright side, he is infinitely better at dialogue than a certain someone whom we are mercifully free of these days.

CC--FINALLY another Black Panther fan! Have you been reading Hickman's New Avengers? He's done wonders with the character. In the past CA was considered "a smidgeon stronger" than T'Challa but T'Challa was created to be the second fastest Avenger behind Quicksilver. These days, he's gotten a power boost by the goddess Bast although it's not clear how big a boost he got. Marvel now considers him superhuman, and I'm glad.
Hey has anyone "seen" Sharky around?

I was being coy just to get cheap attention. It worked!
I liked it a lot--I'd give it a B+. I loved the guy who played Falcon--he is very likeable. I also thought his flight scenes were very exciting and scary. The wings were super cool.
I am on the fence about the guy who plays Captain America. I think the character needs to be a bit older and more commanding.
I loved the fight between Black Widow and the Winter Soldier. She was fast and brutal. In fact all the fight scenes with all the characters were great and exciting. Now if we could just get Scarlett Johansen to act her way out of a paper bag, we'd really be in business!! The poor thing is a big zero in the personality department (I have a feeling I'm going to feel like Frankenstein soon being chased by angry villagers for saying that).
The CGI was spectacular! Breath-taking, really.
Yeah it was very good. Next up will be Guardians of the Galaxy, which I still haven't seen. My review will be as bold and incisive as this one.

I think it's about who the writer is. Marvel isn't exactly known for being consistent. The official Marvel line is that the serum makes CA "as strong as a human can become without being considered super human." He's been shown to work out doing curls with two 500 lb plates on the bar, while complaining he didn't have any "special powers like the rest of the Avengers"--but I'm pretty sure no normal humans do curls with 1,000 lbs. Soooo if the serum keeps him at that strength level there's no point in working out with weights, or so you'd think. I can see honing his acrobatics and agility, but not strength.

Hi HB--Marvel, years ago, said that these max weights were bench presses, but today they define it as how much weight the character can lift over his head while standing. Both Captain America and the Black Panther are considered peak human, but both characters have been shown to do certain feats that suggest they are both stronger than that. CA has been shown to kick his way through a solid metal escape hatch, for instance. BP has been shown bulldogging a one ton Rhino, snapping its neck. BP recently got a power upgrade and is considered super human, but so far no one knows by how much.
Re: Super soldier serum and aging. I don't recall (from the 70's-90's) it ever being said that the serum stopped CA from aging. Over time, however, it seems writers decided that it didn't make sense that a character from WW2 could still be physically viable all these decades later, so the serum was the answer to that question. And yes, Foxxy, today CA has been stripped of the serum (why, I don't recall) and is now an elderly man.
I personally think the super soldier serum made Cap super powered, if for no other reason than it increased his endurance far beyond what your average human can claim. He can fight for hrs at maximum performance levels before fatigue sets in. And don't forget that back in the 70's, CA had acquired "limited super strength" although I don't recall how he got it. He had this strength boost when he fought the Sub-Mariner during the Defenders/Avengers war. Later writers took the super strength away.

Captain America is considered "peak human" level. He can lift about 850 lbs. The super soldier serum not only takes him to the pinnacle of human strength, it also gives him nearly superhuman stamina. He works out to hone his fighting skills. Different writers have said he doesn't have any powers but that isn't exactly true.
