I liked the Enchantress! Did you guys read that really early Defenders story (#4 or #5 maybe?) Where the Enchantress first creates the Valkyrie? That is still one of my all time favorite stories. The Black Knight appeared, too!
One hit wonders? Yeah. I want the damned Lion God to come back, like he said he was going to. While I'm still alive, preferably.

I believe once upon a time I had that very Defenders story. I also had a very early Valkyrie appearance in Marvel-Two-In-One (issue #5 maybe). Man, I wish I knew where all of the books I used to have went to...

I voted for the Collector because I'm a sucker for the Elders of the Universe and their obsessions. Whenever they come across the Avengers the fight always has a bazaar twist.

I loved the Collector. Somebody with a great imagination could do a lot with that character!

Bob --
Back in the day the Enchantress was rarely seen without the Executioner by her side, yet you make no mention of him. What's your opinion of the big, burly lout?

Yeah -- the Lion King. That dude is wicked. He wailed on the Avengers, even when Thor was on the team. I loved that.
Still my one hit wonder that I would like to see return is the Berserkeer from issues 207 and 208. He had lots of cool weapons, was ultra tough, visually cool, and he had a good motivation to be a villain. At the end of his only appearance, he was banished to another universe, so he could easily return. Maybe Enchantress could summon him.

I loved the Executioner! I loved him and the Enchantress! But I wanted to see less of them fighting Thor--they always lost--I wanted to see the Executioner fight, say, Iron Man or the Vision! You know, mix it up a little! I also wanted to see the Scarlet Witch go after the Enchantress again! Howzabout a story where the Enchantress and the Executioner come after Thor at Avengers mansion and Thor isn't there? They could then fight who ever's there!

Not many fans of Harras' run here, I know, but I always been partial to Proctor & the Gatherers, perhaps because Harras had plenty of time to foreshadow them, gradually introducing them to the Avengers' readers at the time. I view them as the Anti-Avengers and, from that perspective, the perfect foils for our heroes.

I thought the Gatherers storyline was the longest, most drawn-out, no payoff story ever...
That was not a good period for the Avengers in my opinion, for what it's worth...

The Gatherers were cool, I think. I thought that was the best way to bring back the Swordsman and I wish he show up again.

I did like the return of the Swordsman -- I'll give the storyline that much.
But I thought it was as drawn out as the awful Spider-clone saga, running at about the same time.

Come opn the Master of Evil would have the be the greatest villians the AVengers ever faced. Who can claim to have almost killed Hercules and destroyed the Avengers Mansion while bringing Captain America to his knees. That was a hot story line and I have yet to see a villian bring the Avengers that close to defeat

Good point. When Cap is captured, and Mr. Hyde is beating up Jarvis -- and then Hercules shows up drunk -- you've pretty well hit bottom right there.

I picked Masters of Evil, not just because they were involved in one of the first stories I read, but I like the whole team vs team thing. And all of them seemed to have a gripe with individuals or all of the Avengers. There is one Ultron story that was so bad, that it bummed me out on the character for all time. It was in West Coast Avengers, and he had come up with some way to turn human beings into robots. Iron Man discovered that the cure was to bombard the victims with infra-red light. This reversed the transformation. This story was so hokey and the art so lousy, that I proclaimed it the worst comic ever made and instead of bagging it with the rest of my collection, left it on the dashboard of my car for months before throwing it away. I know it's unfair to hold that one story against Ultron, but I can't help it. Maybe I was young, but I didn't so much mind that. I liked how he took out Quicksilver "I have defeated gods, technological marvels and armies of super soldiers. I have defeated the Avengers tiome and time again. And now they send a jogger after me?" Arm up. CLANG, SMOOSH. "how insulting" And once again I'm standing up for Harras' run. Ignore Death strike and that Collector's run was pretty cool. The concept of a human turned immortal becoming insane because of too much experience? Loved it. And no votes for the Triage (Or whatever, Triathlon's religious cult was called?)

The other day I was thinking Loki has been overlooked by this poll... After all, he was the original, unwitting cause for their banding together, and he's been shown through the years to plot & carry on different plans to achieve their destruction, as it greatly irks him to know they are, in a way, his legacy.

Good point. Created the Absorbing Man (terrible name, great character) and came up with Acts of Vengeance

Also, one of the last numbers of the original run, Vol. I (I forget which one...), were he shows up in disguise at Avengers Mansion and causes all kind of enemies from their past to reappear & menace them once more... What I especially liked about that one is that Jarvis was instrumental in defeating the God of Mischief. I think, on that regard, we can include as well "Last Hero Standing", even though it takes place in the MC2 Universe.

I would say that the problem is not so much with the poll as with the fact that Loki is seldom used as an Avengers foe. And, in my opinion, when he does appear, he seems to come out of left field.

I've always gone for Ultron. He's like the Freddy Krueger of super villians. Except for that one short time in WCA where he generated as a good guy,... that was just wrong.

Nice Guy Ultron was one of the worst ideas in Avengers history. (See, Doom? I can criticize the old stuff!

Except I did used to know some pretty mean girlscouts.

I liked the Ultron Mark XII development, though I am willing to criticize some of the details (adopting the name “Mark” was a bit much!). I don’t want Ultron as a good guy on a long-term basis (he’s too good a villain, and it’s a little too close to the Vision’s origin anyway); but I think Englehart planned Ultron XII for a short-term arc (back when arcs really were arcs, not multi-part stories), and as such I think the storyline was fine.

It was actually very popular. So popular Marvel Legends ir releasing the rare "needs a hug Ultron" as a chase figure in the next collection

I know the last post here is almost 2 years ago, but I evened things up for Ultron. While I think that Kang is actualy a better character than Ultron, I give Ultron bonus points for his connections to the Avengers. Plus, that time travel/paradox "if I went back in time and killed my father before I was born, would I have been born?" B.S. annoys me a bit.
