But Bong -- it was the '70's, man!
BTW, doesn't that faceplate make the most sense? I mean, and I don't know about all of you, but my nose sticks out from my face a bit. I'm thinking that flat faceplate could mean for a sore proboscis!!

I'm thinking that flat faceplate could mean for a sore proboscis!! Ha, ha...!!! All too true, dlw...! However I think Elton John wouldn't have much of a problem using the flat faceplate. ;D There even was a short segment in one of those humor editions of "What If...?" which addressed the issue, remember...? The one which asked: "What if Magneto got in an elevator with Doctor Doom, Iron Man & Colossus...?" When IM gets into the elevator he says "This helmet makes my nose hurt." Even so, I still say the faceplate with a nose may be comfortable but uncool... And Tony's supposed to be that "cool exec with a heart of steel"...!

I have that poster up in my comics sanctum and love it.
As far as the Iron Man with a nose situation, the story I recall reading is this: in the 70s, when Stan Lee was less involved with the day to day operations of Marvel, he was in the offices and saw a drawing of Iron Man, and said something along the lines of "Shouldn't he have a nose?" Apparently, he wasn't saying Iron Man should have an honest to God nose, but more like, his face was too flat. Well, everyone freaked out, and lo and behold, IM got a pointy nose. Then months later, Stan saw the nose and said, "Why the heck does he have that big nose?" And just as quickly, it was gone.
It might not be true, but it sure sounds like something that could happen.

Tana, that's a funny Stan story, and from all I've read about him -- not terribly hard to believe!!

Yes, I've read this, too. Stan was referring to the fact that the Iron Man mask looked too tight (too close to the face), with no room or space to accommodate a nose under it. He wanted the artwork redrawn. Several sources state that Stan mentioned this to then-editor in chief Roy Thomas, and it was Roy who was the one who then ordered artists to add a nose to the IM mask. When Stan saw the nose later, as Tana stated, he was dumbfounded and wanted it removed ASAP. Hmmm...could the nose fiasco have contributed to Roy's stepping down as EIC a few months later (in 1974)?

I have the utmost respect and admiration for Roy--he and Stan Lee (and some great teachers) were the ones who instilled a love of reading in me. I'll always be grateful to them.

Actor David Carradine, most noted for his portrayal of Caine on the 1972-75 television series "Kung Fu" was found dead (authorities believe he hanged himself in a suicide) in a Bangkok hotel yesterday.
Another part of my childhood, gone.

Yep, I've been hearing this on the radio today. Man, that's a shame. I absolutely loved that show-- though it got a little trippy in its last season, I seem to recall. He (David) always struck me as a bit moody and unsettled. One wondered how comfortable he was in his own skin. He was certainly delighted, though, with the quality of his own work in KILL BILL-- it's nice to see an artist have such a triumph so late in their career.

It's sad indeed! "Kung Fu" was one of my favorite tv series of all time. Do any of you remember when he was a spokeman for the Yellow Pages or something like that...?

The whole family used to gather around to watch Grasshopper and Master Po...
sad that he could not find the serenity in life that Kwai Chang had on TV.

I actually read his autobiography. Look Carradine up on IMDB and check out his eccentric body of work. He and Busey always astonished me with their wacky career choices, sometimes blowing me away and at other times leaving me shaking my head.
I loved the episode of Kung Fu where Kwai kicks Jose Feliciano LITERALLY across the room.
This news saddens me, as a fan, but doesn't surprise me. Dramatic to the end.

You know, I did wonder if this might be the case. I worked in a forensics research lab many years ago and was shocked to find out how often this type of death occurred. The thing is, it was often actually preferable to some of the families in these cases that the death be thought of as a suicide than this sort of accident! People still have a lot of hang-ups - no pun intended.

Do any of you remember when he was a spokeman for the Yellow Pages or something like that...? No...but I do remember reading an article about the young Barbara Hershey (during the time she called herself Barbara Seagull) and her older live-in boyfriend, David Carradine. They were expecting a baby (whom they named "Free"--later changed to Tom). Their arrangement was considered scandalous for the early '70s... Tonight's episode of "Mental" features David. 9pm ET on FOX.

Actually, yes, I do remember some Yellow Pages commercials-- sort of low-budget, and (sadly) exploiting the Kwai Chang personna. He really did kind of hit show-biz bottom for awhile. Some infomercials for tai-chi types of exercises, that kind of thing.
And didn't WB or UPN or Fox bring him back in a series where he played a modern-day descendant of. . . himself?

It was actually a commercial for Yellow Book, which I think is a competitor of the traditional Yellow Pages. Yes, it did exploit his old Kung Fu role, not that that hasn't been done before. Sorry, but I do wish Bruce Lee had gotten that role.
Yes, he did play his own grandson in a new Kung Fu series. I saw part of one eopisode. He moved slower than molasses in January! The bad guy must have had a difficult time standing around waiting to be hit.

How about the "new" logo for the Fantastic Four? Should bring back some wonderful Bronze Age memories for your old-timers!! This is the cover to FF #570 -- I love it!!
