1. John Buscema, 60's era 2. George Perez, second run (not #'s 141-144, 147-150 -- but that was OK) 3. George Perez, Vol. III 4. Brian Hitch -- I know its Ultimates, but the man is good! 5. Neal Adams -- he'd be higher, but he had such a short run!!

#1 almost goes without saying.
1. George Perez (esp. the late 1970s work-- I didn't like his recent work quite as much, for some reason)
2. Jim Starlin
3. John Byrne (he did some great stuff on Avengers and FF, back in that late '70s period)
After that, there are tons of good ones. I'd love to see Steve Rude take a crack at them. And I loved Michael Golden's work on that Annual. Also liked Alan Davis's brief run.

I agree 90% with Van... the only two points of disagreement are that I preferred Perez's newer work (only marginally) and, similarly, I preferred Byrne's AWC work over his 1970s stuff.

Easily George Perez (his second period for the characters' faces, the most recent one for the backgrounds) then John Buscema, Al Milgrom (yes, I'm one of those 3 or 4 people in the universe who think he is not that bad ;D), John Byrne (as artist, not as writer), Neal Adams and Jack "the king" Kirby.
Ps, I too would like to see Steve Rude on the book, I liked his work on Spiderman: Lifeline, and Superman/Hulk.

As Perez seems to be high on everyone's list, I'm curious to see where his other work fits in for you with his Avengers stuff. I personally like his Wonder Woman run (beginning with issue 1 after the Legends relaunch -- trade paperbacks are presently coming out) best, then as I've said his second run on Avengers (Bride of Ultron, et al. His cover for #161 with Ant-Man is superb!). Next on my list would be his time on the FF around 1979-80.
My main man is Big John Buscema. As I said above, I'll take his 60's Avengers over any of his other work. Second fave run would be his post-Kirby (Romita was in there for a couple of issues first) run on the FF. Although dominated by Joe Sinnott's inks, Big John's storytelling is all there -- the 4-part Galactus story around issue 120 is a lot of fun!! And, while not a big sword-and-sorcery guy, just about any of his Conan work is beautiful, too.

Unfortunately i'm not as excited about his recent stuff. It seems to favour highly detailed backgrounds at the cost of foreground quality.

Under the category of "Liked him, but he's down my list a ways..."
Bob Brown, circa 1973-74 (late 110's-120's -- Collector story in #119 and Zodiac story in #120-123). Also had a nice run on Daredevil. Simple, but really liked him. I don't know if he's even still alive.

My #1 pick is John Buscema- circa Avengers Vol. I # 41-62 (forgive me if I got that 41 wrong- the Diablo, Dragon Man issue I think). Don't get me wrong. I love Perez and he can pack a panel w/ more beautiful art than a fanboy like me could want, but Buscema back in the 60's was what got me hooked on comics...
So Perez #2...
And #3 is Sal Buscema. He is probably one of the most underrated artists in comics, but he is one of THE GREATEST panel to panel story tellers out there. His work for Marvel was/is solid, consistant greatness; Avengers, Hulk, Conan (inking)...
And of course nods to Adams, BWS, Hitch, Byrne, Starlin, and Deodato, all of whom added to the legend and deserved more time...

Over the last couple days, I just read issues 101 through 106 for the first time -- and I have to say that Rich Buckler is really making me a happy fanboy. All his characters are long limbed and lanky, and that's a nice switch, because prior to this, I just read the issues from 1996 with Deodato's lumpy musculature. Mostly, I'm stricken by Tuska's realistic human figures. It adds a level of believability to the story telling.
But looking over everybody else's posts -- I have to say that the Avengers have been pretty lucky for having so many excellent artists over the years. How many other titles have all the Marvel age greats of Perez, Windsor-Smith, Byrne, Kirby, and J. Buscema in their heritage?

John Buscema is my favorite--especially with Tom Palmer on inks. The Black Panther and the Vision never looked cooler.

Big John is my alltime favorite, too - for me he (and maybe John Romita sr.) simply set the standards how a (Marvel) comic should look like. So, like BoredYesterday said, I naturally enjoyed the Rich Buckler issues in the early 100s, too. But, of course I see, Buckler wasn´t that innovative and one has to admit his art seems like that of a Buscema clone.
Next on this list would be Neal Adams.
On the other side I´m not that a fan of George Perez´ art, the older stuff is okay for me, but his Volume 3 stuff for exemple I did not like at all. I wonder what Frank Miller could have done, his (early) DD work is simply breathtaking.
So, being consistent I like new artists in the vein of Buscema, right now I´m thinking of David Finch, just one exemple.

#1 Perez, 160's- 200 (late 70's) #2 Byrne 180's (late 70's) #3 Deodato - I didn't collect these issues, but flipped through them. Despite the great artwork, the stories didn't capture my interest. Perhaps I'll revisit them if anyone reccomends them When did Neal Adams draw Avengers? I can't place his work.... kree-skrull war perhaps? His work on Legion of Superheroes in the mid 70's was awsome and X-men. Too bad he's such a snub at con's now. he won't sign your books unless you buy them from him.

Adams drew the Avengers, some covers, some interiors, around issues 93-97, which was the Kree/Skrull War.
Which Legion issues did he draw?? I remember him on Teen Titans, but not Legion! I'd like to check those out!

Sorry, I was thinking of Mike Grell's work on Legion. Grell did some great work in the early 200's through about 225.

I was looking at Giant Size Avengers 2 yesterday, and boy, do I wish we had gotten more of Dave Cockrum on Avengers. His work in that issue is absolutely awesome (he also inked his own art).

My personal view is simple.
1. George Pérez 2. George Pérez 3. George Pérez 4. George Pérez. 5. Steve McNiven
...Since Pérez is simply the best artist of anything comic-y, ever...

You may have forgotten George Perez in your list, Doom McNiven is the artist of Civil War, right? His art was a bit too realistic for my taste. Not bad, but not my cup of tea.

Hey, tomorrow marks 2 years this thread has been going.
Stil don't have a favorite though. I'd have to line up too many books next to each other to figure that out.

McNiven is the artist of Civil War, right? His art was a bit too realistic for my taste. Not bad, but not my cup of tea. I love the ultra-realism. He also drew some New Avengers issues, and everything he does seems beautiful to me. Hell, as far as I'm concerned, his image of Thor from Civil War #3's last page should be iconic and is the best image of the character in DECADES, Clor or no CLor.

For me, it's a tie between Neal Adams & George Perez... Probably Perez would win, for he has a definitive edge over Adams when it comes to longevity as an Avengers' artist, were it not that, as far as I'm concerned, the Adams run, however brief, was the ultimate iconic period for the Assemblers, and his take on the Avengers my favorite visuals of the entire series for decades to come... Likewise, if we're talking favorite writer/artist team, in my book Thomas & Adams tie with Busiek & Perez for the gold...

I'll also have to go with Perez first and Adams second, with that second place being because of his very brief run. Buscema third. I really like Barry Smith's work in the extremely short time he was on the book. And I think Epting was very underrated.
Byrne is the antichrist, so I can't put him on the list.

Now that you're done having panic attacks, here are my real answers. Unfortunately, I don't have as much Avengers background experience as some of you, but I'd have to say (in no particular order): Perez, Neal Adams, Steve McNiven, Copiel, Alan Davis (brief as it was), and Bryan Hitch.
I would have put Finch on there, but some of his Avengers work has been so-so, though when he's on, he's on. I mentioned in my "Disassembled" review that has these moments of amazing brillance . . . and then long moments of bland, phoned-in work.

I'd have to say Kirby a class all his own
1. John Buscema 2. George Perez 3. Jim Starlin 4. Neal Adams 5. Sal Buscema 6. Don Heck

John Buscema wins the argument to me. I also didn't think Don Heck did too bad of a job in the Avengers books he did, and Jack Kirby is a close second to me in best artist!
(Just bringing this thread back from the dead, let's see if anyone else has a say in the "Favorite artist" category!)
