Here's Ign's review of Thunderbolts #118.
If you've ever paid attention to the scores that I give out (you scare me if you do), you'll notice that I'll rarely give out a really big score, even if I truly loved the issue. Ever since the switch to our fancy new rating system, I've cautiously held back giving a huge score – waiting for the perfect comic. That issue has finally arrived.
When you have a team made up of reformed and not-so-reformed villains, a standard level of controlled chaos is a given, but Warren Ellis has taken it to an even higher level. Norman Osborn is crazy, the Swordman is power-hungry, and Venom is just hungry. Each one of those characters is taken to the limit in this issue, and it's a sight to behold. If that was all that was going on here, it would still be a great read, but there's still more. Even though they're never even mentioned outside of the recap page, the newly imprisoned unregistered heroes in the lower reaches of mountain base are what make this issue so brilliant. That added layer of uncertainty, keeps the reader from jumping to the typical conclusions that you would in such a situation, since you don't know what's real and what's manipulation.
I can honestly say that I've never been the biggest fan of Mike Deodato's previous work, but he is perfectly suited for this series. He has an uncanny ability to make the dark darker and the moody moodier. He also adds in a number of absolutely chilling scenes throughout the issue. I never knew that you could draw a guy sitting on a toilet in such an unnerving way. You notice that I still took off .2 from the score in the end. The only reason I did that was because, if done correctly, this arc's conclusion will definitely get better.
Review Score:9.8 Incredible
