Get ready to read ign's review On Ultimate Iron Man 2 #4.
Marvel has magical powers! That's the only possible explanation for the surprise that awaited me when I first looked at the cover of Ultimate Iron Man II #4. Instead of being the final issue of a four issue limited series, it's now only issue four of FIVE. In last issue's review Jesse lamented that the series was coming to a close so soon. Apparently, Marvel brass heard Jesse's plea and made his wish come true. Sure…it probably has more to do with some editorial decision made at the last second, but I'm going to stick by my magic theory for now.
Even though this is no longer the final issue, there is a large degree of closure to make you think otherwise. Tony Stark, Obadiah Stane, and Mark Scott find themselves trapped on a plane with an armed nuke – never a good combination. Orson Scott Card plays all three characters off each other to great dramatic and comedic effect (sometimes both at the same time). At the same time, James Rhodes and company work hard on the ground to unravel the mystery. It's also good to see Nifara Rhodes finally do something of substance. You pretty much assume everything's wrapped up until one final discovery at the end, and now I have no idea how everything's going to reach a satisfactory conclusion in only one more issue. I would have been perfectly happy with this issue being the end, with the final surprise being a lead in for Ultimate Iron Man III. Maybe that wasn't an option though, so here we are…
Pasqual Ferry again does a phenomenal job on the art. He can somehow make his style mesh perfectly with a mundane and ordinary setting on one page, but still handle high concept sci-fi on the next. He also gets bonus points for making Tony look like Aristide Bruant (esoteric reference for art history majors). With the ongoing Ultimate Universe titles currently consisting of Ultimate Spider-Man and little else worth mentioning, it's good to see Marvel put out a couple of strong limited series (the other being Ultimate Human) to keep things interesting.
Review Score: 8.5 Great
