Ign reviews Young Avengers Presents #3.
The Young Avengers anthology series finally justifies its existence with issue #3. The previous two installments have been pleasant but certainly not necessary reading. But finally, more than halfway through the series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa takes the opportunity to tell a story that needs the attention.
The twins are arguably the most deserving of a spotlight issue. Speed was introduced relatively late in the YA game. Additionally he and his brother, Wiccan, are really the only Young Avengers with direct ties to an A-list hero. And speaking of which, this issue features the two of them searching for their mother, the Scarlet Witch. Wanda's whereabouts since House Of M are privy to only a couple characters, so Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa uses the boys' search as an excuse to introduce YA fans to the broad strokes of their history in Vision And The Scarlet Witch and Avengers West Coast.
If that story is already familiar to you, the good news is that the relationship between Wiccan and Speed is actually a lot of fun to read. They haven't gotten much opportunity to play off one another during Young Avengers's hiatus and Aguirre-Sacasa seems to have a very good understanding of their workings. If nothing else, it's another interesting character beat to use when(/if?) the proper series resumes.
The lone weak spot of this issue is the art, which is strikingly uneven. Some of Alina Urusov's panels are perfectly fine and resemble a more cartoony Josh Middleton. Others - like any that feature Hulkling - are messy and weird. Some facial expressions are odd as well. It's ironic that the best Young Avengers Presents issue would be the worst-looking so far.
Still, a good script is a good script, and of all the issues of Young Avengers Presents so far, this is the one that's worth a read by those who aren't hardcore fans of the team.
Review Score: 8.0 Impressive
