Advance publicity for Young Avengers included a slogan that went, “They’re not what you think” or “It’s not what you think” or something along those lines. At the time, not having much beyond the name and some teaser images to go on, I thought the comic would be about a team of young persons styled after various Avengers. It turned out it was what I thought. Evidently Marvel was thinking that we were thinking something other than what I was thinking. So, what were we supposed to be thinking?

I think that they were playing off of their intent to try to fool reader with the powers of the team.
Patriot as a Super-soldier -not quite true Hulkling as a mini-Hulk- again no true Asgardian as an well,... Asgardian with electrical (instead of magical) powers- still not true Iron Lad as a derivitive of Iron Man -not Kang
So this is what I think they were trying to get, make everyone think "How did these kids get Avengers powers" which they didn't really have in the first place.

Maybe that was it. I was skeptical of the obvious correlations from the first, but nevertheless I remember being entertained by the series’ managing to subvert them.

I think that is probably what hooked me into the story in the first place.
